Rachel Maksy Made Me: Victorian Miss Frizzle Cosplay ft. Black Snail Edwardian Jumper Dress Pattern

Miss Frizzle Goes Back in Time - to the turn of the century! Let's take some thrifted sheets and a simple PDF pattern and make this cosplay come to life!
The sewing pattern I used was mainly the Black Snail Edwardian Jumper pattern (yes, I know, this cosplay is actually an Edwardian one, not a Victorian Miss Frizzle, but hey, that just leaves room for Miss ‪@rachelmaksy‬ herself to make a truly Victorian cosplay), and then I hacked on the sleeves from the Black Snail Seaside Dress pattern, but only with middling success, I don't recommend this particular sleeve pattern to anyone as I found it most frustrating to work with when not using the (period accurate, but completely unnecessary for this costume) sleeve liner pattern.
I went with the jumper dress pattern because it really looks like the inspiration image that I found, and was quite easy to modify to have those little pleats and the double breasted v-neck opening in the front. Speaking of which, if you want to purchase that image, you might be able to get the seller (on Etsy) to reprint the photograph for you, I'll include the link for that below!

When you were cutting out all of the stars I was thinking, okay, so if this was Rachel Maksy, she'd be gluing those suckers on, and then you immediately had a shot where you're starting to sew and then "Let's make it more Maksy" and pulled out the spray adhesive, so well timed editing there. (Also, great mash-up cosplay.)

ahhhahaha, that's absolutely perfect!! And, I mean, let's be honest, I do generally take my time a bit more than Rachel on the sewing, simply because I really do enjoy sewing, but this was literally the PERFECT situation (for so many reasons) to use the spray adhesive... a true tribute to the queen of Fkk Around & Find Outttt!! "I washed, dried and pressed the fabric" OMG, thank you! I am a bit confused when youtubers say they want to be using thrifted materials to be thoughtful about resources, and then they skip important and REALLY SIMPLE steps which make final garment look good in the end. They end up with a piece which is ill fitting and hardly werable, materials are literally waisted to it and somehow they are happy? I just don't understand. Thank you for being really thoughtful to your art process and being respectful to the materials you use, great job!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Yes, I have occasionally noticed the same thing... and then often said garment is never to be seen or worn again (I mean, not that I'll be wearing this cosplay that often, because it's... a cosplay... but I wear my history-bounding stuff all the time)!! I try as much as possible to be conscious, and frequently use recycled materials or thrifted fabric/supplies, and also to take enough time and care in the creation process that the resulting garment is something I'm proud to wear, and that will be durable through the months and years that I wear it! Not to say that I never buy fabric, because I do, but also... I like the thrill of thrifting, and the challenge of squeezing pieces onto limited yardage!!

@camille_la_chenille Год назад

@ShannonMakes

@@ShannonMakes It sounds very nice! I found a knitted jacket with very 1890' puffy sleeves and little sheeps embroidery at a vintage shop, and paired with the right skirt and hairstyle, it gives me a kind of late 1800' Ms Fizzle vibe. But if I ever tackle a full historical Ms Fizzle, I'll make a split skirt because it seems exactly the kind of practical yet pretty garment she would wear.

I like to draft just the top portion of a skirt - waist to just below hip or wherever the angle becomes obvious, then note at the edges “+65cm” or whatever the distance to the hem is. Save paper, cut fabric without the pattern in the way (1m steel ruler makes a great fabric holder)
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
That makes a TON of sense, that's very clever, and if I had endless yardage, (albeit less visual for filming 🤣🤣), I might do the same thing, but because I'm often working with recycled or thrifted fabric, I seem to find myself constantly needing to plan out my layout VERY carefully so I don't run out of fabric, and having the full pieces definitely helps me visualize and quickly run through a variety of layout options!
@lynn858
@lynn858 Год назад
Yup! I've watched so much Closet Historian, I'm like... are we drafting the hips off the A-line or the pencil skirt? But yeah. If you're tight on fabric, I can understand wanting to see the full piece.
@haveaballcrafting8686
@haveaballcrafting8686 Год назад
I know maths isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but my nerdy brain finds it easier to do a diagram and calculate the size of each piece that will fit on the fabric than to try to find a place in my house to spread out the whole fabric and jigsaw all the bits of paper. My favourite skirt is a 1960s-style swing skirt (with pockets) I made from 7 teatowels - local shop reduced pretty drill teatowels to 30%. I had a lot of fun calculating the perfect trapezoid to make a 7-gore skirt with flat front and elastic back waistband.

Love the Miss Frizzle Edwardian space adventuring dress. For authentic hair, save the hair from your brush and hand felt some Victorian hair rats. My grandmother, who was born in 1886, taught me to start with a small amount role it between your hands into a ball. As you add hair wrap it around and continue hand felting until it is the size of a small chicken egg. Then concentrate on elongating the felted hair piece into a sausage, which as the name implies will look like a rat. Wrap your around and pin in place with two large Bobby pins. I made half a dozen over the second two years of the pandemic. Today I can rock a full Gibson Girl and honestly say it's my own hair. 😉👍💖🕊

I've tried a couple of times to use patterns.... and discovered that they all require heavy modification for a couple reasons: I'm in my 40s and don't wear a bra, so things sit a bit different from what is expected, I have a wide flat bust so the measurements lie, I've got a spinal injury that requires a lot of core strenght so after all the physiotherapy exercises I'm like you, kinda thick waisted in a muscular and non-squishy kind of way, the narrowest part of me is two inches above where I actually WANT a waistband as waistbands up on my ribcage is... just... no... but where I want a waistband is in that inch of space I've got between the top of my hip and the bottom rib and of course now I've got a bit of padding which squishes and my hips are so narrow that if I make a waistband a comfortable measurement for my waistband waist, I can slide it right off my hips, so like you, there's gonna be a lot of socks stuffed into the hips if and when I ever make a full corset! Ultimately my sizes according to Mood Fabric sizing when I went to make Sewstine's Kefta pattern were bust: 12, hips: 8 and waist... get this... 18. I wear men's 30" pants which have an actual waistband measurement of 32", one size up from that falls off without undoing the button. So I went with the bust size and STILL had to take it in inches because my measurements lie. But at least now I have a princess seam bodice block that is fitted to my own weird shape and now I just use other patterns for inspiration. Also I wanted to say congrats on so little waste on the blue fabric, that's one of my goals when I use fabric cause I rarely obtain fabric for a specific project, I just grab a random amount and hope it's enough to make *something* out of! That's actually how my first jumper dress I made was a handsewn purple linen medieval spiral lace kirtle! I'd already used 2/3 of the fabric for a long sleeved medieval gores-and-rectangles style dress and sleeveless and shortened was the only way I was getting much else out of what was left! Springtime in Canada indeed... was supposed to have been 12C yesterday, this morning it was -14 with the wind chill in Ottawa, and my in-laws in Sudbury got over a foot of snow when we got two inches before the warm day... And dear gods I hope Rachel sees this!!! That reveal was so fun. I only ever saw Magic Schoolbus as an adult cause I'm old but it's one of the few more modern shows I'd wished had been made early enough for me to appreciate more, but it looks like you nailed it!

"Could we make it a bit more.. Maksy?" *Grabs the spray adhesive* This kinda left me confused. She does use glue sometimes, but for fabric designs I feel like Rachel would've chose to paint the stars, moons and planets in her awesome style. She loves painting, it's kind of her signature thing.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Well, I don't really have a big budget for these projects, and I had shiny fabrics in my stash, and not shiny paints, soo.... I feel like using what's on hand and making do, even if it means using glue instead of sewing something is also absolutely in the spirit of our heroine.

Why is the sewing music such a vibe? 🤌
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
to be fair, I watch lots of other RU-vidrs in completely different niches that use this same music! But I think within the sewing space, people are afraid to use music that might make it seem like they're copying other creators, so definitely leaves us with a "Maksy vibe" 🤣🤣

I am totally loving the entire vibe of the video. Yes to a video about making your final version of a corset. And all the other bits that go with the underpinnings. Heard back from Ms. Rachael yet...? The completed piece is perfect. 10 gold stars. And I type that as a teachers kid... both of 'em... Odd thing I've noticed when it comes to thread. If you're feeling brave about your seams-line ability (I'm slowly getting there) using an off-white thread will work with just about any colour. Which is useful on a deadline. I figure if you repeat the same colour of top-stitching across a number of garments it becomes more of a design choice? I use a Gutterman 22. Mister Husband doesn't consider a sewing project of mine truly on the road to almost completion until I randomly yell out "Why do I like SEWING?!!" whilst sitting at my machine. Meh. Thanks for including the wrong turns and how to pull out of them. The only useful trick for fitting I have at this point is to wear the garment inside out. That way you can pin just the once. And that's kind of it. So any videos that include some more info would be warmly welcomed. Mm. I miss Montreal. You could do an entire video about the store and the owner and people who work there. Could even turn it into a little series of Mom 'n Pop fabric stores in the city. If Ikea started a bra line called Upliftia and included All The Sizes (she types as a 36G... eyeroll)... they'd be richer than Elon Musk & Co. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Thank you, Cathy and co, for the fun words! No, I haven't heard anything from Rachel, although I'd be a little bit surprised if I did... I dunno how good YT's notification system is, plus she probably gets a million of them every day, so... I honestly don't expect to hear from her, but that's OK! And while I am quite capable of sewing a straight line, I prefer to have a matching thread in this instance (or at least to go with black instead of white, since I did that on the inside, and it was OK), but then you guys wouldn't have gotten to see any of that fun little shop, now would you?! I definitely have plenty of projects where the thread is NOT a match (mainly because I'm stash-busting with my thread too), but for this one, I really wanted something very discreet!
