To pluralise an English word in the vast majority of cases then simply add a letter “s”. Thus, one American, two Americans. An apostrophe isn’t used to make a singular noun into a plural noun. Hopefully your maths is better than your English!

It's just an algebraic manipulation (specifically, the distributive property) that enables you to effectively use a number twice without actually using it twice.
