Merci, J'ai écouté beaucoup de fois ce concert, un des mes préférés, par différentes excellentes pianistes et differents orchestres mais cette interprétation de Sokolov est sans doute la meilleure .Une esperience magnifique .

I remember this concert - I was there! Sokolov and Dutoit didn't get along; they were barely looking at each other and didn't even shake hands after the concerto. There was definitely tension between the two, which translated into a very exciting performance! Also, the OSM musicians, who had some issues with Dutoit at the time, were visibly doing their best for Sokolov. That was obvious by looking at the orchestra. There was electricity in the air... As a result, the orchestral playing was particularly superb that evening. After the concert, I went to see Sokolov and talked to him. His favourite subject of conversation is to talk about pianos. He complained about the piano he just played on and, jokingly, told me to find some time to sneak in with an axe and to destroy it:))!

Thank you for this comment! This makes clear everything in this particular performance so much! Probably one of the reasons why Sokolov doesn't play with orchestra nowadays. Heard his interviews when he complained about conductors. Probably he needs more freedom and doesn't want to share the field of interpretation battle during recitals.

The more I listen the more I dislike Dutoit. Very ordinary conductor who doesn't live up to the giants like Sokolov or Argerich. Of course, this is my opinion, feel free to disagree.
@alexeyziskin3012
@alexeyziskin3012 Год назад
@@eugenenizker9597 I don't particularly like Sokolov, but he played a very exciting Rach 2 live in Montreal. Anyway, that's just my personal opinion. As for Dutoit, he's very good in some music and extremely boring in other types of music. He's not a great conductor, but I wouldn't call him very ordinary. I heard him live do an amazing Rite of Spring (not his recording; that's not so good). A very ordinary conductor doesn't pull off a Rite of Spring like that, believe me.

Interesting stuff. There are two recordings of Sokolov playing Brahms Concerto No. 2 on RU-vid. One is with Jukka-Pekka Saraste who seems stiff and pompous and with him, Sokolov seems to constantly be fighting to get some air. The other is with Lu Jia and it sounds like a different piece of music. So smooth and enjoyable, the conductor checking on the pianist all the time to make some room. And funny thing about handshake as well. With Lu Jia, Sokolov literally jumped from his chair to greet him, while with the other guy he first bowed with the piano, and then simply thanked him coldly.

@alexeyziskin3012 out of curiosity, what don't you like about him? I didn't like him much until I'd heard a lot more of his recordings, but I was blown away by the shear volume of repertoire he has up his sleeve, and despite that, how thoughtful his interpretations generally are

@eugenenizker9597
@eugenenizker9597 Год назад

Eugene Nizker Exactly. Musical performance ought to be more than a mere run-through by an automaton. I’ll take Sokolov warts and all any day. His performance reminds me somewhat of Gieseking’s reading of this work with Mengelberg, another desert island version of this concerto.
@echorrhea
@echorrhea 5 лет назад
Eugene Nizker Glad you enjoyed Gieseking’s Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3. The version with Barbirolli is indeed amazing. And we weren’t the only one impressed by it. Rachmaninoff himself was in the audience for that performance, going backstage afterwards to praise Gieseking not only for the performance itself, but to give him his approval for having played it uncut and with the original version of the first movement’s cadenza. And maybe! You’re not the first to ask me if I’m related to the author of Il Cortegiano. I haven’t been able to trace my family tree that far back yet. ;)

I usually love Sokolov's playing, but somehow, this sounds so disjointed. Well, at least the 1st movement, so far. It's like they divided it into different sections, each with separate goals. (edit: Also, too much rubato. The orchestra and the piano keep sliding in and out of sync with each other, like a dislocated shoulder.)
