by far the best rachmaninoff no.2 version I've ever heard. Love how the piano never gets faded away by the orchestras. The Piano flows very well, and the rest merges and synchronizes in a fantastic way.
Volodos is the best for playing Rachmaninov. I listened almost 100 times his Rach 3 and I always cry of pleasure. (sory for my English spoken I'm french)
I`m breathless after listening to this incredibly moving and powerful performance . Arcadi Volodos is such a gifted pianist, its a pity more of him is not heard via radio or live TV performances. My one ambition is to go to all performances in London for the "Last Night of The Proms:. Only the Brits could pull off such a musical extravaganza.
A huge, full bodied and technically amazing performance...by BOTH Mr Volodos and the orchestra..conducted by one of the most savvy Rachmaninoff conductors, Maestry Chailly...who was on the podium for the most exciting young Argerich performance of the 4rd Concerto. Count on Proms to bring us historic performances. Along with th Tube video of Kissin's No2, this is a first choice. Fot me, it's often about the collaboration between pianist/Conductor. In this case, it's all one could ever ask. There are a whole slew of super worthy RU-vid videos of this Concerto. We are blessed.
The whole orchestra as well as Mr. Volodos are in a state of rapture. A moment of utter transcendence that will never be forgotten by any. Truly, one of the all-to-rare transcendent moments. Wish I'd been there. Thank god, it was recorded.
@@pianosenzanima1 hmm he is still active with concerts and cd’s, released a schubert album etc. But he doesnt get much publicity anymore, maybe its his choice
I was lucky enough to see him live im 2018, in a concert that only costed... 17 euros! I knew that he was going to play there because of a small announcement in the information panel in the place of the performance. Not soon after Lang Lang did a concert on the same place and it was on all the news (also, it costed around 150 euros lol). I would prefer Volodos any day. So maybe it is true that he isn't making much publicity of himself lately... But I can tell you that he is still probably the best living pianist today. His Scriabin was so superb that when he played Vers la Flamme I could feel the temperature of the concert hall rise... Best performance I've experienced.
I think Mr. Volodos was not merely playing this great work for an audience, he was playing this work direct to... Rachmaninov. They were in the room together.
Stupendo.... dopo averlo ascoltato suonare questo concerto per pianoforte di Rachmaninov, continuo a meravigliarmi per l'articolazione nei passaggi veloci ogni nota può essere chiaramente ascoltata, come lampi che volano via !
The visual element of this recording is not good. But the audio is truly amazing. Arcadi Volodos. Astounding talent. A truly phenomenal live performance of this masterpiece.
Saw him on Mondy, 9.12, live in a recital. Stunning and galvanizing Schumann Phantasie C-Major. Maybe the best Ive heard in my short period of hearing this kind of music.
Arcadi Volodos - beyond reasonable doubt with Martha Argerich the two finest pianists of our times. His 3rd Rachmaninov concerto recording made in Berlin is simply amazing.
I absolutely agree. I feel extremely priviledged to have heard (live) Volodos playing Liszt B minor sonata and Bach/ Vivaldis Sicilienne and Scriabin sonata No 7 and the first piano concerto by Tschaikovsky, just to mention a few. So many beautiful moments I'm thankful for! I'm very curious to see where Volodos' genius will lead him ... I think it is what makes him so brilliant that he plays every piece and every note of note with such an incredible passion!
Rachmaninov is very actual composer for modern life we live in ... His music becomes never old ... His sounds give in us force to survive even if we in deep trouble time and melody is winging with its ambrosia, one can feel air
Ich mag es, wie er im Tempo nicht zögert, wie man es viel zu oft hört. Sein Spiel hat Richtung und klingt dabei auch sehr gut. Und natürlich, die nötige Virtuosität ist auch zu Genüge da ;-)
I’ve been following Volodos for many many years. Yes, I respect Schubert of Brendel, Richter, and few other pianists, but Volodos is something else. He proved his immense power of musicality just from his Schubert and Schumann, hence his Rachmaninoff is, without a doubt, the most, THE MOST, solid, reasonable, precise, yet free, interpretation out of all other pianists.
Beyond praise. No superlatives would do this performance justice. Excellent performance by the orchestra, as well. Such an aching beautiful rendition of the second movement. I disagree with 789armstrong, I don't think his, Volodos', genius is going to waste. He is simply following his interests and passions.
mais pourquoi s'arrêter avant la fin du deuxième mouvement???? où est le troisième??? Meilleure version ! quel génie ! une sensibilité bouillonnante avec une rigueur richterienne..... ahhhhhh !!!!!
i am pretty sure its a now lost piano technique where you concentrate hard enough for gravity to bend around him, including the sound. I am sure thats how rachmaninoff played too
I asked the same question when there was the whole video somewhere in youtube (and not divided into two parts). I also thought it was some kind of technique. It's not. It's just a recording error. That was the answer I was given.
Are you sure that he had to drag them out of their beds? Or did they let him do his thing because they recognize his genius to bring out the best of Comp
Loved the unconcealed disdain A.gave to Chailly...merited as Volodos survived the too loud playing...Volodos one of the few that can't be drowned out!!!!! SR learned how to write a more transparent orchestration in his revised 1st Concerto which then is actually his 3rd and last before leaving Russia., much more scintillating than the c and d minor Concerti.
Toute ma jeunesse... lorsque ma soeur ecoutait ce concertot en boucle.. sans compter le generique de l'emission de Bernard pivot!!! Et vous tous les rappeurs de ce monde vous pretendez faire de la musique!!!!
Great Music! As for Marcel Mombeek's comment, you sir, the one who should be ashamed of your comment. I find it not very smart to compare and especially bad-mouth great performers.
Please refer to this page: www.bbc.co.uk/events/erbd4f This historic performance happened in 1997, not in 1998. More exactly, at Prom 60 (19:30 Wed 3 Sep 1997 Royal Albert Hall).
This is the greatest performance of Rachmaninoffs Concerto #2 I have ever heard in over half a century! But it is really painful to watch knowing Volodos will probably never record it commercially and instead opt for some late Scriabin that even the composer himself couldnt stand, or an hour long piece by Schumann that Schumann wished he had never written.A genius going to waste.
@Niiiko08 Yes never to forget Richter and is fabulous DG vinyl disc from the 60´s the first LP I bought. What a festival. I saw him playing a few months before he died.Impossible to forget a pianist like Richter. Still the best interpretation of Rachmaninov IMHO.

a tip: with Moiseiwitsch, Sergei himself, Byron Janis do find the Russian archive video on RU-vid of Van Cliburn and K.Kondrashin........ t h e n , youll get the ''real thing'.... A.Volodos is the only heir to this repertoire....
If I stretched my imagination I could almost see a chubby Erik Estrada sitting at the piano. But hard as I try I just cannot imagine Volodos dressed in a Chips uniform sitting astride a Kawasaki Z1000 (JJ Townley...also a composer of a neo-Romantic Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor here on RU-vid)
You need to cut back on the VIAGRA, bro, and force your- self to concentrate on the music for just a little while!! Too much of the other can make you lose your mind, you know! (sounds like you may already have!)
check out my Rachmaninoff (I am the pianist) on my channel. Theres a little-known song by him I include (no singer included). Can anyone tell me what it is? Go on - let's see how good your early Rachmaninoff is..
