Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad (Denver and Rio Grande Western) No. 463 is a 3-foot narrow-gauge class "K-27" 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam railway locomotive built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903. It is one of two remaining locomotives of D&RGW class K-27, the other one being No. 464 at the Huckleberry Railroad in Genesee Township, Michigan. The class eventually became known by the nickname "Mudhens". Today, No. 463 is operational on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado.
Fifteen locomotives were built, originally class 125, then reclassified K-27 in 1924 when the D&RG became the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW). The K-27s were built as Vauclain compounds, with two cylinders on each side, expanding the steam once in the smaller cylinder and then a second time in the larger one. The extra maintenance costs of the two cylinders were greater than the fuel saving, so they were converted to simple expansion in 1907-1909.[2] They were Rio Grande's last purchase of compound locomotives. They pulled freight, passenger and mixed trains on the D&RGW in and over the Colorado Rocky Mountains, traversing the entire length of the railroad. They were built with their main structural frames outside the driving wheels, with the counterweights and rods attached outside the frames.

Out of curiosity, is the whistle on this locomotive original to it? Many of the other locomotives I have seen on the Cumbres and Toltec line have the Rio Grande "chime" whistle. I have ridden the Durango and Silverton line twice and the Georgetown Loop twice, but never got down to Antonito to ride this line. It is on the bucket list to do...
@WW2Hangar
@WW2Hangar Год назад
That is a good question. Maybe someone will chime in to verify. I’m would love to go back and actually ride this one day 🍻 How are those trips?
@jgrahamiii7749
@jgrahamiii7749 Год назад
@@WW2Hangar The Durango and Silverton is a water grade and is mostly about the scenery. The Georgetown Loop is only about 6 miles but climbs about 900 feet. There is a very high bridge where the locomotive crawls over it at less than 10mph. You can feel the bridge shaking..they use Shays sometimes to pull maybe 6 gondolas or passenger cars. I want to ride the Cumbres line partly because of the 4% climb from Chama to the summit. Having walked or driven a lot of abandoned railbeds, it would be cool to experience it as it originally was.

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚋🚊🛤🚞🚝🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃 especially steam locomotives 🚂 like 463. He says what he likes about it is its smaller size and high pitched whistle which makes it different from all the other steam locomotives on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. He also hopes that steam locomotive #497 is restored to operation soon and the line between Chama and Durango is rebuilt and used again as well as the line to Torrington and the Rio Grande Southern Railroad but he doesn't want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality! He hopes that the Denver & Rio Grande Western line to Santa Fe is restored and the line to Alamosa is either converted back to narrow gauge or a third rail is added so narrow gauge trains can run on it as well. He really believes that it would increase business in Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroads and give the passengers a change of scenery.

In my youth went on the Cornish Riviera Express, Paddington to Penzance , hauled by King class & double headed for the Dainton incline. 1955 approx ,comfortable good food & cheaper than by car .
