I checked the runtime of the video before hitting, and got shocked - under one hour. Fortunately just an intro, looking so much forward to the hours of watching how this unravels!
Please don't forget to share charging/fueling costs at the end. After a 3400 mile trip with a Turo Model 3 this summer, exclusively supercharging,I was surprised to find the per mile cost pretty similar to gas costs had I rented a Camry hybrid.
I think the cost savings occur when utilizing the EV as a daily driver and (a big AND mind you) if you are able to charge at home with decent kWh charging costs. Out on the highway, road tripping, the cost per kWh is many times higher than if charging at home.
@@kiwi335d It will be interesting to see if it's at least cost-competitive with gasoline. On road trips I like to use overnight level 2 charging to reduce costs, but that's not an option here!
Even on a big road trip, you still get to purchase some of the electricity at cheap home utility rates, simply by leaving home with a full battery and arriving back with a near-empty battery. That savings is not nothing - especially with a big-range car like a Lucid. You can't do that with a gas car, where 100% of the miles traveled must be from gas purchased at a gas pump.
Wow, this is so amazing! Finally a outofspec sedan race with many sedans some of which are my favorite electric sedans like the Porsche Taycan and lucid air!
Out of Spec has no peers, they're just on another level. It'll be interesting to see this test done year-over-year as both the cars and infrastructure improve. It's a big opportunity to be able to look back at a point-in-time snapshot of the technology & network. Can't wait to see how this plays out. I predict the podium order will be Taycan, Model 3, Model S, followed by the Lucid and Ioniq 6.
OK, here's my guess for lineup at the finish line. 1. Acura TLX 2. Porsche Taycan 3. Lucid Air 4. Hyundai 5. Tesla Plaid 6. Tesla Model 3 7. Mercedes Benz 8. BMW 9. Genesis 10. 2013 Tesla Model S Can't wait for the next episode!
Pretty sure the bmw did not finish. Kyle had it on a flat bed in one of his posts probably because of the 40kw limitation. I also think the model 3 is going to be higher up and the lucid lower also because of its limitation
there used to be a time I would have gone nuts on this .. I used to be a truck driver .. so love drives with no sleep was my jam I'm thinking 45 minute power naps while charging would have made me unstoppable
I think the Model 3 have very good chances, considering the seamless Supercharging and navigation. And great to see Robert from Aging Wheels! Should be fun!
Love these races, wish there were one a month… but I know that’s not logistically realistic. I love coast to coast camping in my MY, so I will likely watch this series then try to recreate on my own. Love the education these provide as well. I was out at the new OOS hub last Saturday at 1230am… great spot.
Based on that thought, ICE wins. My 2019 Audi A4 got between 36 to 38 mpg, going 70 to 80 mph with a pass going way faster. I am hard on acceleration. From St Louis to Duluth, MN only stopped once for gas and had just shy of half tank left when arrived in Duluth.
Kiwi who did Seattle to New York 23 years ago by train. A coast to coast trip like this in an EV is on the bucket list. Going to follow this with lots of interest. Liked and subscribed...
Can't wait to see the result. Would also like to see a similar race where cars are required to stop at hotels for the night, rather than drive around the clock, as I think most people doing a real road trip would prefer to be sleeping (in a real bed, not a car seat) rather than driving at 1 in the morning. Assuming the cars are able to charge overnight at the hotels, this would reduce the impact of DC charging speeds on total trip time and also the travel time difference between electric vs. gas in general.
I recently discovered this channel, and the content quality was already amazing. But, this is on another level. I have never seen a content like this on RU-vid.
@OutofSpecMotoring how about the Hyundai I5. I guess you got the I6, but you want comfort too for doing true touring. I find the cars you got sit too low, hard to extract yourself out of.
Thank you for this test. Next RT 20 from Boston to Portland. The secondary road test will test the charging infrastructure and each teams resourcefulness.
Only if you don't mind the toxic fumes, the destruction of ecosystems for fuel, the continuous pollution while driving, and the complete inability to recycle anything of value from these cars. But at least they go far on a single tank right?
I'm betting on the Model 3. Great range, great efficiency, and great infrastructure. This is just very hard to beat. Also....I own a Model 3 2024 AWD. So yea, I'm a little biased.
If you want to road trip, the Tesla Model S Long Range would have been the correct pick. Efficiency is crucial for fast charging. Every kWh you don't use does not have to be recharged.
