I totally get what you're saying. When I'm practicing on the Nurburgring, instead of pushing hard every lap, I started to focus on being consistent throughout the track. With this in mind I managed to get my average lap 15 seconds faster and even got my fastest lap during a "relaxed" run. Great content as always!

oh? i got 9:43 in the trueno 86 i would just gun it and finish the lap with broken wheels. eventually you would get further and further fine. funny thing is. the first quarter of the track is the hardest. it gets exponentially easier. just a few spots with the steep transition inclines where keeping traction is a bitch. whene ver i go up hill is when i calm down.
@RadeticDaniel

@@dbspaceoditty what game? In GT6 I've managed 9:08.2 with the AE86 on the Nordschleife, stock with comfort tires. In Assetto Corsa I'm yet to break through the 9:40 barrier with my poor skills xD

I just realised this is an excellent way to learn any track inside out. Take any track that you are slow at, and push your race pace up slowly. Soon enough you can become a beast at the track.

Saying that in rally makes more sense(if in doubt of the notebook), and seeing Colin Mcrae and is cars always costumized by trees and gravel on the roof makes even more sence😆, what a legend. RIP

this applies to life. dont compare yourself to others. just clock in the hours. work harder than anyone else but at your own pace. do it daily. practice perfectly at your level. you will improve. Your confidence level and enthusiasm will tell where you belong. i also lose myself when i am in a constant race or battle against others. This is a reminder for me. Thankyou viperconcept. great vid as always. T_T

Very useful advice and yeah i feel uncomfortable when i try to push the car especially when i have no idea how the car works on the track. I also learn to admit i'm an amateur, there's a lot of racer are faster than me, so if my pace is slower, at least i need to have a consistent pace so i don't lost too much time and hope the opponents make a mistake.
@RadeticDaniel
@RadeticDaniel 2 года назад
If you can find other racers around your comfortable pace, you can learn better car control by racing them. At least it is what I do, i get more confident going off the racing line and pushing for an overtake on someone around the same speed than trying to beat a laptime. In the end I end up getting a better handle on weight transfer and snappy movements the car might pull and the race pace grows slowly with that as well

Thanks for these kind of videos. I'm a psychologist and I love racing so I find the results fascinating. About how be build frustration and insecurity inside until it comes down crashing...literally. This is something simulation doesn't get and I have to wonder if it ever will. In real racing risking it can lead to serious I physical harm, in simulation it's only a No Finish/DNQ. So it's an aspect that needs specific training like what you're doing with this video. It takes a while to be aware of these things.

if it serves as anedoctal evidence, I used to try and find my pace by bilateral search in simracing, meaning i would go double or half the last speed change and correct for more or less speed until i got it right for me and my level of reflex, skill, sensibility etc. After I started gokarting it took me a few scarry moments to revert to slowly increase pace until it felt uncomfortable and i decided it wasn't worth the risk. Then again, my comfort levels and pace increase margins fell drastically after my first crash. So you are absolutelly right about simracing giving a certain margin to bad habits and the need for adaptation when changing between real life and simultaion

This is interesting, very interesting. Because I absolutely can't apply this to my driving and I don't understand why. - If can do my best lap in 1:30.0, then I can grind 1:30.5-1:31.0 laps over and over (of course, if driving conditions don't change, like fuel, tyres, etc.). - Trying to push harder doesn't do a thing, even for one lap. - If I try to lower my pace that would be it, slower pace, like 1:31.0-1:32.0, but that will also mean different braking points and different lines which will only help me in case my car is damaged or my tyres are gone. - Spinning out is out of the question either - I wouldn't even try to race in a car that can suddenly snap on me, that's not fun at all. I'll either pick a different car or make some basic setup changes to make it more stable and predictable. I'm not a fast driver. Could be I'm just persistent enough to learn what to do in each corner and that becomes my pace until I learn a better line or a better approach. Very interesting indeed...

I think this exercise proofed how important it is to know your limit and keep within it in a race. So how can you apply this technique when practicing and trying to improve your limit?
@RadeticDaniel
@RadeticDaniel 2 года назад
You keep an eye on your delta to the reference lap and try to close laps a few tenths of a second slower so it doesn't get replaced with a new fastest lap of the session. The less efort you make to keep a certain pace, the more room you have to push. So when increasing your lap time, try to push a bit more in the sections you're feeling like being wasted. Impatience and boredom are good indicators of where to find pace, as long as you don't let'em take control and over reach your limits.

you're right, I've learnt this on myself when I was doing a race and in qualy I pushed and pushed and couldn't improve my lap time much and later in a race I was driving casually, just focusing to pass the corners clearly and not make a mistake without trying to be fast and I actually did a faster lap time like that hahahah so, this actually is true! pushing faster doesn't always make you actually faster!

For me, just to enjoy fm7, set like 50 laps, i don't know many circuits, and go from kerb to kerb, to learn some lines and i use the speed as a reference...first 10 laps no more than 60kmph, but each kerb should be touched with at least 30kmph...increasing the speed with just 10kmph after 10-20 laps is a lot...touching each kerb with at least 60kmph gives me a lot of satisfaction, but i keep the upper speed limit low just to remove temptation. This way i see a lot of improvement in time and after many many laps i'm more confident into pushing

@cldtn79

All very right ... I have improved a lot by moving to Assetto Corsa Competizione, the rating of the game is ruthless, cleanliness and consistency and fairness otherwise you don't go ahead ... now on all games I start in positions like tenth and twelfth in qualifying, maybe at 2 seconds from the first but I often arrive in the top three, making my race smooth as if the others did not exist, they overtake me easily but crash after 3 corners or can't stand the pressure ... maybe I don't have what it takes to be a champion but I have a lot of fun in competition…

With the types of vehicles that I drive in simulators, I wouldn't be able to do this, since I would melt the tires and cook the brakes within one or two laps! It would be impossible to be consistent while also pushing the car near its limits. 4,000-lb luxury sports sedans are not built to withstand 10 to 15 laps of a track at race pace 😂

Great content!! It's a struggle because we always want to go faster... catch up to those guys in front of you. But the harder you push, the more chance of a mistake. Then frustration mounts until a possible rage quit. Recently I've tried to focus mainly on racing line, and smooth braking/ exits... working on consistency. It is then SO satisfying to see other (faster) folks making a mistake, and you sailing past as the 'slower' racer. Sorry Viper but I'm totally disagree. The only thing I see here is players trying to chase another (you) with more experience and with more hours spended. I see track performances as electric guitar performances... you gain speed training difficult exercises, NOT playing slow. My very sorry Viper, is my point of view. In my opinion, a player become faster driving in difficult tracks and of course spending hours of practice... the errors appears, but is parth of the lesson. That's all.

Ahahah don t worry dude: as Long as you stay polite you have all the rights to disagree. But, please allow me to reopen the debate: if i try to force myself (even if i m more experienced) i'll surely end like both of them. If you try to force yourself at any cost, It's useless to continue: you'd keep making mistakes without learning anything. What you have to do First Is to learn the theory and try to apply the theory step by step, and not pushing like an animal at any cost always everytime. This Is what i Ve learned by myself after my Years of experience and i successfully apply to my students which have tangible improvements thanks to this way of learning. Not saying what you wrote Is wrong. You know... There are multiple ways to learn something. Here i Just showed my theory Is right, so my way of learning Is fine... At least for me 😉

I think even while playing guitar you learn difficult exercises but first time you play them slow and when you learned them you can play it faster and faster. If you make mistake you have to find a way to eliminate it immediately in other way you learn to make this mistake all the time, no matter is racing, playing on instrument or whatever else. At least from my experience things looks like that.
