You got the same advice I did "Always start at the right hand end of the single thread side of those (and other) bags". Keep an extra seed bag on the top of the planter rather than rebalancing between hoppers as they run out. Make sure you have hand cleaner to use after handling seed and before snacks as the seed has insecticide on it.

Funny how the people who survive because of the work you and others do feel the most entitled to comment. Even IF it was your dads money (and deeply sorry for your loss) your work ethic is amazing. Laura, you and Grant have joined a small group of 20 somethings I have met over the course of the last year, who have renewed my faith in the youth of America. My wife and I are in our 70’s and we have been watching with horror the never ending discord coming out of the national media. I have uncoupled myself from the corporate news media and I am learning about farming from you and Grant and your families. Thank you so much for the positive energy you bring to us, your extended UTube family. Please don’t let negative comments get you down, you are doing Gods work.

I think 2020 has been the catalyst for those who see the empire is falling apart that we will have to get back to the land to survive whatever side of the pond we live on. Sadly I am not a farmer but I am rapidly expanding my "victory garden" and learning a lot last year and this year. I am actually considering changing careers to farming because regardless of what happens in the economy people have to eat and I may have to feed myself and I need to develop those skills while there is still time.

A lot of it depends on their upbringing. Good kids usually have good parents. I can show you lots of 20-somethings that were given every chance to succeed and still failed...but today's farming looks more like push button video games than the back breaking labor I remember from my youth.

Farming in Northern Montana we know all about the "race against the weather". Its a never ending battle. You should do a video describing the love/hate relationship we farmers have with mother nature. Crazy how a beautiful woman with an infectious personality can make a guy who lives in farm equipment, watch someone else run farm equipment. The same equipment...hmmmm

That's what I was thinking. Actually, what she is doing is a very modern, super high tech, space age type of large scale farming. The nay sayer's are jelous of her and her success. That's why they give her a hard time. I hope she understands that. Would those people say the same thing is she was pulling the seed machine with 20 mules? She is the young, high tech version of Meredeth Bernard. I was working at a very large USDA dairy when I was her age. Does that mean I was not farming because it was a government owned dairy?
@gokmachine
@gokmachine 3 года назад
Although it would be interesting to anyone who wants to start in the farming buisiness. Does Laura pay rent for her field, the tractors and other equipment? These machines are certainly not available for a startup with 100 acres. By the way, I don't think it's the intention of this channel to let viewers think any random girl can be a farmer with multi million dollar equipment but some seem to believe it is.

Howdy! Just an observation... when you go to load the seed into the bins you might want to use a hand truck to bring out more than one sack at a time. If you get really creative you could use a heavy duty rolling cart that would hold more than what you could put on a hand truck. Also, when fueling you might want to top off the DEF at the same time. Having to go back and forth seems to be a lot of time used in traveling and not planting. I've never farmed but just thought that this was a common sense items per my point of view. Enjoy your channel a lot. Thank you farmers of America!

People keep asking about the male/female concept to the growing of seed corn so let me try to explain things this way: You can't tell which is male and which is female by looking at the seeds. A corn plant is basically a hermaphrodite it has both male and female parts (just like a flower) in the same plant and can self reproduce. The male part is the tassel which produces pollen, the female part is the corn silk produced by the ear of corn. There is one strand of corn silk for every seed on the corn cob and every strand of silk needs to be "fertilized" by pollen from the tassel in order to produce a kernel of corn on the growing corn cob. But the problem with letting the individual corn plant fertilize itself is that over generations the corn plant begins to suffer from inbreeding and stops producing high yields of corn. To keep the yield of the corn crop high the seed corn company is always trying to cross breed one genetic version of a corn plant with a different genetic version of the corn plant to produce a hybrid seed that will deliver a very high yield of corn when it is planted as a cash crop in the following year. To accomplish the cross breeding the tassels of the genetic "female" corn are removed as the plant grows so it can not pollinate itself but rather become pollinated by the genetic "male" corn whose tassels are not removed. (4 rows of female are planted to every 1 row of male) Then once pollination has completed, to prevent accidentally including seeds from the genetic "male" plant into the harvested crop, the "male" plants are destroyed. And as Laura states, destroying all males is her favorite job on the farm. ;-} Destroying males is an easy job for her, I'm a male and she destroys me every time she smiles. :^D

When I see the video, memories of my time as a farmer come back. I loved the job, even if the working hours are actually terrible. A good 20 years, then my health no longer played along and I had to quit my job ... I miss the days on the combine harvester or tractor, but I do not miss working 7 days a week from sunrise until late at night. Today I can plan my time better and meet up with friends more easily or even go on vacation when it is actually harvest time. But if someone asks me if I could turn back time, if I would do it differently - no, I think I would do it again. But it doesn't work without a tractor, and so today I have my own little tractor for the horses and as a hobby. Have fun in your job and hopefully a little more free time than I had as a farmer.

This might be a naive question, but I was wondering why you don't keep a couple five gallon buckets of seed strapped close to your hoppers so that when you run out, you can just pour some into the empty hopper? Knowing your seed spacing per foot, and how many feet left in your row, would tell you how many gallons of seed you need to finish.
