Racing Wheel vs Controller vs Keyboard - Just How Close Can You Get? 

it's not as precise as a thumbstick for me, i feel more comfortable with a controller or wheel

It probably helps WASD mastering for other games

ikr, in liveforspeed days many go for mouse setup.

The major problem people face is that the mouse doesn't return to the original position like a thumbstick or wheel.

@@vintagejock3951 the only solution to that I think is lifting the mouse up off the mousepad then setting it back down

yeah you can do a lot more micro adjustments having the stick up and turn with the border instead of direct left or right

Yeah I've always done that in all racing games and I thought that was just the norm, don't know why people don't do that more

kontrolfreek precision rings are absolutely amazing for this. Gives you even more control I feel than keeping the stick forward and you also don't risk the stick you get with that

@@jname9368 If you have a controller with gyroscope (I know ps4 and ps5 controllers have it but don't know about xbox) you can actually use it for steering. What I do is I make gyroscope left and right axis to tilt my left stick with help of DS4Windopws. So when I rotate my controller to left it acts like I am pushing Left stick to left. Then I use Joystick gremlin with vjoy for an axis curve and using an average filter plugin so it isnt shaky. Then assign vjoy axis to steering ingame. Might explain more indepth if anyone wants but it is atleast for me much better than using stick and only problem I have is force feedback. Other than that steering is great. I tried gyrosteering mod in ds4windows also but it felt really bad because it didn't recognize fast direction changes and put in stupid inputs.

That's epic! Yes I can imagine if you put the time and effort into it (especially when you add further precision assistance) then you can be properly competitive. Props to you guys and girls who smash it on a controller!

@@thrasherdave1428 I guess its about being as smooth as possible with that limitation. The way I personally drive is I adjust my speed to control the angle of cornering. On the exits, I quickly get the car straight, so I can push the throttle to 100% earlier, because we can't do like 50% or something like others ya know. Sometimes you have to spam the buttons obviously, but its not that annoying when you get used to it. I think 2020/21 have best handling for keyboard. Idk, look at my videos of how I drive, maybe copy some of the moves

Eh depends. You can get a cheap wheel and cheap paddles for like $150 combined. Even cheaper if you buy used.

Yeah I've been simracing with a controller for years and I've had so many people in ACC ask me what wheel I'm using. It's hilarious to hear the reactions because the amount of plain negativity I get is rediculous with some even amounting to calling me a hacker when they discover I haven't sunk 2-3k into a setup. The sentiment of being better than somebody else through pure talent, skill and practice is unmatched for me.

@@Silentpartner2176 I'll throw a video up on my channel showing the combinations I've come across and the setups I've come to make. My setups are I'd say a happy medium between the insane RU-vid and LFM setups and safe, slow ones. They are capable of good times and you're able to push but it will warn you or give you a chance to catch should you go over the limit. Like I say, won't get you into any league winning shape just by slapping a setup in but it definitely helps.

That's what I've been finding too. Perhaps it's because my muscle memory is already set with my keyboard and the timing of the steering, brake and throttle is slightly different with a wheel

It prob doesn't help that compared to irl driving, when using the wheel controller we can't feel the weight/movement of the car when like how we can when driving a real car. Granted iv gotten a bit better, still not as good as with a normal controller but a bit better 😂

In GT sport I play with pad and use the six axis much much recommended.

My ratings 1- steering wheel. This was because it is the most realistic with more movements 2- Controller. Because it’s not bad. It’s just a dumbed down version of the steering wheel 3- keyboard. It’s honestly pretty difficult. You only have forward, backward and left/right, not much in between action

In fairness that's absolutely an opinion I respect but I'd say at the top level of competition on most serious simracing games a controller is a pretty significant disadvantage to the wheel and pedal setup. Being somebody who has tried both extensively (using a friends setup at his place) I can definitely say that the communication through the feel of the tyres, suspension, weight, basically all aspects of the car is numb to a controller. Some might say that's an advantage but it gives next to 0 warning when it's going to slip or understeer, everything is reactional by visual not feel meaning you see the oversteer not feel it. Also the age old excuse of "correcting oversteer by snapping the stick to the opposite way" doesn't work. Vast majority of the time on controller you lose the car, you're gone as seen in this video. GT sport I'd go as far to say controller for me personally was way worse than a wheel. I remember playing it on my friends setup and being around a second faster per lap straight out of the box on a wheel and pedals from controller.
