What a fantastic and thought provoking video. As a newish average runner I have been a slave to my Garmin for 2 years. Certainly will take many of the points raised into my first Marathon block in the new year in preparation for London. Brilliant job Kieran 👍
Great video! The biggest takeaway for me is the power of building a strong aerobic engine, high volume and low stress, more than the ‘naked run’. By the way, this is the kind of videos I love, shoes reviews are overrated 😅
Thanks, this was really interesting, I see this is becoming a real passion of yours. Any effort to keep us from becoming too dependent on our running watches is much appreciated. As for myself, I don't think I could race on feel, but as I am becoming a more experienced runner I tend to look less at my watch during training. The last few months I've ditched the multi-field screen and only look at my current heart rate while training, as well as the km splits.
It has helped me to feel more liberated when I race. I still use my watch in training and I think in an 'A' race marathon I'd still use it but I think there's a lot to be said for relying on it less in many of our regular runs and races.
Fascinating stuff. Ran parkrun yesterday on feel (though not at full gas). Normally I'm guilty of using the Garmin as a crutch for reassurance I'm on target pace, conversely it can be dispiriting checking the watch when you're off schedule. Also as Nick Anderson mentioned, there is the fear factor of pushing past an assumed performance ceiling
