James Dator (Goucher College Professor of History and Africana Studies) explains the origins, causes, and changing nature of racism and race ideology in the United States from 1619 to the present.
Didn't realize this was an hour. I'll be back. I find it sad that this was done 4 years ago, and not this week. It could have been done 40 years ago. We're so slow to learn.
I can not feel empathy for people who do not have empathy for others. I will never turn the other cheek when the other person is in the wrong. I will never go out of my way to help those who hate me, they are not my brother and I am not their keeper. Those who harbor hate in their hearts for me is my enemy and I will treat them as such.
The truth can help a person shed racism. Racism is an ideology backed by beliefs that derived from a certain time period. Racism is a relatively modern concept, arising in the European age of imperialism, the subsequent growth of capitalism, and especially the Atlantic slave trade, of which it was a major driving force. Before this period humans were just a variety of people and were judged based on the land and culture they came from. Even in the biblical period this was the case. Racism was never mentioned, however people received treatment based on their lineage and city origin. Canaanites, Hittites, Jebusites, Isrealites...etc. During this period humans just came in a variety and color had no bearing on how you were judged as a person.
@HalF I agree. But my statement stands. Opportunity is limited for minorities (which is wrong) and there are bad results that comes from that for both sides. In time you will eventually have two wrongs going at it. But for one wrong to complaint about the other wrong is a blatant hypocrisy.
@HalF The prof talks about this myth in the third act of the video, "Choice." Opportunity is for everyone in America, certainly, but some groups have more access to it than others. For example, why was the New Deal labeled as something "good" to bring us out of the Great Depression, but then affirmative action is something "bad"? The prof also talks about redlining, a federal housing loan practice that came out of the new deal. There, he clearly lays out the case that Black people were not given the same access to these loans as White people. So how can it bee that everyone had the same opportunity?
Watching this on Blackout Tuesday and, as a Canadian, it's brought new light to the systemic issues in place for so long. Great that this professor defined it and laid out some of the issues, but now I hope that someone would actually have the authority and wherewithal to do something so that this issue doesn't just slip the conscious mind again and then people go back to the way things were. "Change" is a strong buzzword to throw around but, besides learning, unless the deep-rooted perceptions and systems are addressed it's honestly hard to see anything really changing in short order.
I believe that instead of discussing racism so much they want to start teaching black history and the great heroes that we had and the great inventors that we had in this country that have never been credit for their achievements!!!!
My father is from Pakistan and my mother from Brazil and I have met racists from different parts of the world but by far the most racist are the American black people. If any other race says ni-ger they are called racist but black people say it with impunity. There is something very wrong with that. I truly feel sorry for all of the other races that have to put up with such hypocrisy
@@mikefratz2938 that comment isn't helping, at the end of the day the cruelty has been done to both by the elite . people were forced to resent and scape goat each other, people have been conditioned to to point their finger and say my life sucks bc of you , demonize each other even tho we are all literally getting fucked by the common enemy named greed. I know its hard for a lot of people we all have our struggles but we don't all reason with it the same. When workers go on strike collectively for better treatment at work nobody argues at the picket line about who got it worst.. its hard to hate each other when we know where to place the blame . They need us to blame each other to keep us in our places.

"I don't know what most white people in this country feel, but I can only conclude what they feel from the state of their institution." - James Baldwin
The most accurate history of "slavery" to date yet. However, I have a problem with wordage and language. The people that need to view this video will have difficulty processing it because a professor presented it on an intellectual level. Pandering to the intellect does nothing for those that cannot understand the definitive much less it's nuances. How about putting your awesome presentation in a simplified version specifically for the uneducated. You left out the Freedmen's Bureau made arrangements for freed slaves to return to their country of origin, acquire land and sanction marriages and find relatives.
America is the land of origin for the Descendants of American Slaves as the American Slave has a unique history and culture which is Native to America. Of course, the 40 Acres (land) and a mule was either not provided or repossessed.
Check out The History of Race in America by Jeffrey Robinson. He makes it simple and plain. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sEtyPIO6P1E.html
@@kylewilliams3540 I have watched that a number of times. I think his "The truth about the confederacy" is actually better. I was commenting on a matt taibbi piece and one guy did the "MLK" statement" and I pointed him to it and I said pay particular attention to MLK's piece.
As an American, racism is one of the most difficult problems to solve in our country. Take Malaysia as an example where there are many races, ethnicities and religions there but they can live in peace and harmony. Hope our country can emulate other small countries that are safe.
It's a shame there is no transcript provided. Mr. Dator is obviously reading from prepared remarks, one step away from a transcript, yet there is none here. A transcript allows one to casually return to any place in the narrative and look up names, places, dates, or source material, a big help when material is not well known to the general public. Oh well, not this time.
Many white Americans know nothing about black Americans. It is because the white washing of American history. As a black American I will share my family military history with white America. My father participated in World War II. He served in the Pacific. He was what called a Montford Point Marine. Because of the segregation of the day. He was one of the first black Marines. My next older brother served and retire from the United States Navy as a Corpsman. My oldest brother served in the Marine Corps Infantry. He did a tour in Vietnam. From time to time, he suffers from PTSD, and I believe part of his soul is still in the Nam. I was a 1st Lt. in the United States Army. I'm currently retired. I was a policeman. This is just my family military history. White America you could learn so much about your fellow Americans. If you open your hearts and eyes. And learn the history of black Americans. God bless America.
I was taught racism is against a certain race , not color Some races are a different color , some speak differently and have unique cultures , the neighbor to this polish man ( me ) is south Korean lady , she has the same skin color as I, she also has pretty , long , silky black hair ., Soft , smooth , supple skin on her feet and hands and neck and back ... the skin on the upper inside of her leg is like silk. Her husband must love it , too...
Do not underestimate Devil! He (or She?) can adjust to the times. To unsophisticated Eve it was a snake. To Faust it was a horned person with cynical smile. We grew out of these silly ideas. So, here He comes as RACISM. And He can possess your soul without you even realizing it. But rejoice: Democrats can exorcise. Let us hope that they will not resort to burning the sinners at stakes.
Racism is such a hot topic because everyone is racist. Its engrained in your genes and my genes. Humans lived in isolated small groups for thousands of years. We all lived in the same places for so long, that our physical appearance adapted to the geographical areas we were in. Seeing people of a different "race" meant you were seeing someone from a different geographical area, and you were likely being invaded, hence your tribal apprehension for other races. We lived this way for about 200,000 years. Thing is...is easy to get over. Those who cannot stop talking about race are still trying to learn to get over their racism.
It's there after it has been installed there. It's our responsibility to search our (white) actions and impacts through self examination and feedback to identify it and add each instance to our knowledge of what we need to do next time! This is not a matter to brush away conveniently. We're talking about poison here!
@@niccoarcadia4179 As white people, we may actively try to dismantle racism within ourselves, but I don't believe we can ever completely remove it from our hearts until it has been removed from the institutions and laws of our society. I still have blind spots and privileges by nature of being white that will continue to cause harm to BIPOC, even if I want to believe otherwise.
Racial "color blindness" means you make a conscious effort to not discriminate based on race. It was actually beneficial to society. The current movements of "antiracism" hinge on a stipulative definition of racism . This shuts down discussions about race and racism.
Racial color blindness maybe in theory but not in practice. When someone says that they don't see color/race it means they don't see the disparities in situations when presented with their own racism. Thus any accusation against them can be pushed aside as the issue can't stem from them being racist but misunderstanding.
American (transAtlantic) slavery had everything to do with race. Prior to that you are right, slavery was about class and servitude. American slavery subjugated people based on their race not not stature and not as prisoners of war.

Woah... We were given civil rights less than 60 years ago... Prior to that we were treated worst than human for 100 years. Before that we we're freed from slavery, after 300 years... So let us say nigga as a term of endearment after being called nigger for 500 years for no reason... Talk about hypocrisy!!! Don't be an insensitive colonizer sympathizer.
