Racism on steroids: Boston in the 1970s

Here’s a clip, circa October 1979, from East Boston, a largely Italian section of the city that was ground zero for Boston’s busing crisis.
In this video, East Boston High students are speaking out following a school stabbing (apparently, student Robert LaMattina was stabbed, allegedly by a student bused-in from Roxbury).
Pretty shocking to hear this girl speak so casually about black people, calling them words that scream ignorance and racism.
Boston has always had a bad reputation in regards to race. This clip here crystallizes all in 3 mins.
The reporter asking the questions is Art Cohen, long a mainstay in Boston journalism.
Btw, for the best reading on the Boston Busing era check out Common Ground by J Anthony Lukas. Phew. It’s a tour-de-force & a book truly worthy of the Pulitzer Prize it was awarded.

perhaps the lesson from this is dont force people to be together who dont want to be together especially when one of the groups have far higher rates of crime, aggression, disruption and generally lower educational attainment.

During the Vietnam War, dudes on the ground had all sorts of names for the people they were fighting against. Some were pretty rough…some not so much. It was only those far removed from the situation, sitting on a pedestal watching everyone else life within the mess they created…that are able to be politically correct and use only “nice” names.

In the 70 and before that racism was everywhere. Whites couldn’t go to to black neighborhoods, you couldn’t go to Puertorican neighborhoods and viceversa . Irish Charlestown didn’t go to the North End and Rast Boston and the North end didn’t go to Charlestown . Corner gangs everywhere , if you drive and made the wrong turn would have been very dangerous not only Boston but everywhere in USA . It start to change after the Vietnam war that killed lots of gangs members . Whatch the movie by Scorsese “Gangs of NY” locals born against everyone who was an emigrant oven of their own background !!!
