My sister had that happened to her she picked out Josephina then the employee said don't you want a doll that looks like you? No I want this doll keep in mind she's white with brown hair and green eyes which makes me mad I can own a doll of any race

As a person and mum of colour, my daughter loves dolls and I buy her dolls of all races because they are all beautiful. This is definitely a training g opportunity that should not be missed.

I don't think it is the job of marginalized bodies to educate Whites on issues of Diversity and Inclusion. Their "ignorant" card is void because there is too much they have access to that can help them educate themselves in this area. It's their job to prove their intelligence, not ours!

Imagine booking a make-up artist for a special event, and they tell you your face is ugly to begin with. This is what this little girl experienced, for Christmas. Horrible behavior.
@courtneysokal6590
@courtneysokal6590 Год назад
I wonder if the little girl was deciding between two dolls and might have said something like, “this one looks like me, but this one is also pretty…,” and the employee confirmed which one she was going to get. It’s a disappointing situation regardless.

You're a good person to think like this. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case, and the company has accepted that and apologised
@joannaliwanag2749
@joannaliwanag2749 Год назад
That’s what I was thinking. I guess the employee wouldn’t be thinking too much but if they did they could’ve left out the first part and just asked which one the kid wanted.

I have looked at American Girl dolls for my daughter, but still have a hard time finding a doll that looks like my daughter and she is about 3/4 shades lighter than me! It's still not that easy to find dolls for my daughter. The black dolls are either extremely dark toned or extremely light...not much in the middle!

My husband and I were skipped over by an employee at the Houston store. She saw us then decided to pull a lady behind us to cash her out. When see saw us she gave us the face we are us to people giving us since we are LGBT.

As a customer I would have stepped in and supported the parent and called the manager. I do know that many of the stores hire parttime/seasonal workers and the worker might have not paid attention to training, or let it go in one ear, answered any questions and then promptly forgotten or dismissed it. I as manager would have definitely reprimanded the worker, made the worker apologize to both child and parent and then depending on status and policy taken action. As a mixed race(Native American/Gypsy/Cajun) whose ex and father of my 5 children is from India, i have also experienced such kind of attitudes before, and I can get quite biting, mostly in defense of others, or quite sarcastic.

The employee definately meant what was said and implied, or they would have immediately apologized after realizing their mistake. Children are not stupid. She realized that someone had called her ugly, even if the racism part went over her head. I'm not sure if there is a place for racist employees in a store where they have contact with customers of every ethnicity. I would have to let them go! I am Caucasian by the way and older. Thank you for sharing this.

Without being there, you don't 100% know what the employee meant. However, even if it was intended, there is an opportunity for education and the chance that you will make a change in the person. Firing does nothing to make the person better. In fact, it will likely make them more of a hater. If the behaviour continues despite training, then that's grounds for firing. This employee is still going to exist out in society, so why lose a chance at possible rehabilitation? I feel strongly about the concept of rehabilitation and second chances, even with criminals. Ideally, if the employee is truly sorry, they should meet with the child and apologize face-to-face, if that's something the child wants. Healing can happen in those face-to-face interactions. That's why some cultures have healing circles (I am familiar with them from our Canadian First Nations people).

@@c.w.2000 and what if the person will just use the educstion to claim some bs like white racism hm? Or that “the white race is being oppressed”? Because as riducluise as it sounds thats majority of the time the outcome you get, i know from my own expirence as a poc

My first response was to report it to the manager. Part of the staff is seasonal for summer and for Christmas. The staff member may have been hired as seasonal staff and let go as being a part of seasonal staff. I hope this type of communication is included in future staff trainings and that discrimination issues are brought up during interviews. One slip of words is one thing. Having staff who believe in discrimination and use this type of vocabulary regularly is another.

IT IS NOT THE JOB OF MARGINALIZED PEOPLE TO EDUCATE WHITES! There is enough Diversity and Inclusion information for them to dismantle their own ignorance. Racial hegemony is an intentional choice!

I think its a case of bad wording imo. I don't think the employee ment to be racist. As we don't know if the employee apologized or not, we dont know for sure if it was a slipp-up or had bad intention. Sorry for any spelling errors, English is not my native language.

Diversity and representation in any doll brand should be encouraging and kids are a lot smarter than people think
@darrellwallace4182

This very well could have been a misunderstanding, or it was a racist mind set slipping out unintentionally. I'm black and in many cases this new hypersensitivity in today's culture goes to far or jumps to conclusions that may or may not exist. I do think dolls should be made to represent all of us, but a doll is a product like any other mass produced item we buy, but because it's made to look like a person we tend to take it very personally, when in fact it is made to meet a certain market demand. If blonde blue eyed caucasian dolls sell in higher numbers then any of their other dolls then is it the company's fault or ours? Is it a fault at all? Representation is important, but companies are in business to make money and if certain products don't sell as well as other's it's not necessarily a racist thing and more the hard cold reality of big business and the bottom line........profit.

Personally, this is really sad. All people are beautiful, and it hurts that these sorts of things still happen, especially in a place like AG where there is already a lot of backlash over the lack of dolls of color. To me, Melody is beautiful! So are the other dolls of color! Why can't people see that sometimes? I've noticed the same thing happens with disabled people as well. Like, why haven't we gotten an AG historical or GOTY with a physical disability? I know Gabriella had a stutter, but I'm talking a disability that would be factored into the doll's box, face mold, etc. It's as if AG wants to say indirectly that only white, able-bodied, blonde dolls will sell and thus are the only thing that's beautiful. I know they never say they have stood for nor ever will stand for that sort of thing. But, I think they're lacking the guts to show it, and that's what hurts here. Really glad our Twitter OP got in touch with AG to reprimand this employee. Hopefully, his daughter was able to find closure talking with her parents and knows she is beautiful inside and out!

Poor Child..terrible experience..these sorts of Dolls should not be chosen to look like the child but the child should choose the doll they like most. I am italian..my hair is dark and my eyes are light ..my skin is much lighter than the tanned barbie dolls..i grew up in the 90s and had barbie Dolls, Bratz dolls ,Disney princess Dolls and porcelain dolls in every shade and race because they were all beautiful..i would never pick the doll that looked like me most ever but the doll that had the prettyest dress or best accessories or was collectors addition ... Pocahontas was the first Disney princess Doll i chose because i likes the film scary spice and ginger spice where my favourite spice girl Dolls their colour Didnt count..race and color never ever mattered or crossed my or my parents mind. Now i have daughters of my own and they have blonde hair and my home is filled with Dolls of Every race and color just the same...they never pick the doll that looks like them but the character or doll that appeals to them most regardless the colour of the plastic or race.
