No disrespect to any other DJ's who follow in a similar vein but Steve Wright was the best there ever was. Chris Evans is probably as good as any other at the next level down, but we'll never see the like of Steve Wright again. Everyone's mate. Bless you Steve ❤
If only Bannister and Dann had let Steve play what HE wanted on that show,he wouldn't have left. Evans killed breakfast,just as he did when he took over from Sir Terry on Radio 2
he actually joined radio 2 in 1996 doing a saturday morning show and sunday love songs, the saturday morning show stopped in 1999 when the afternoon show started. Jonathan ross took over the saturday morning show
I am not particularly a fan of Steve Wright, but the BBC and Radio 1 in particular, has always had the tendency to kick its best talent out when they get it in their heads that they need younger people who are less talented. Wrighty took a trip into the first version of Talk Radio where he and his posse did the weekend mornings. I don't think he ever did go back to Radio 1. Serve them right if he didn't.
They did the right thing. The station is aimed at teens so the DJs need to be the right age. It's not meant to be a station listened to by everyone . Radio 2 exists for a wider audience.

This is not the day he resigned. If you listen to the clip, he mentions that Chris Evans is taking over the breakfast show from the following week. How could they have sorted out a replacement before he'd told them? He actually resigned in January, and his last show was in late March/early April 1995
