I've had requests for a walkthrough on my Raptor's communication setups. Some of the solutions I've come up with have become production items, such as the BuiltRight Industries lower driver side rear mount and passenger side rear mount. The radios I'm using are the Yaesu FTM-400XDR dual band ham radio, and Kenwood TK790H that was rebuilt and programmed by PCI Race Radios. The cell booster is a WeBoost Drive Reach.
iPad is a 10.5 32gb wifi model, in a RAM Mount GDS case and locking dock, paired with a Garmin InReach Mini in a RAM mount. All mounted to the Built Right Industries dash mount.

Your set up is perfect and EXACTLY what I want to do in my 2018 Raptor. What is the mounting panel you used under the back seat for all your equipment. I've been looking for something identical but unable to locate. Could you provide me a link in a reply? Much appreciated. Thank you for the video...

Amazing! Can you share some detail about the run from the battery to the fuse box? What size cable? Did you use an inline fuse between the battery and fuse box? You're blog says you have a 40 amp breaker, I'm guessing that takes the place of the fuse? Is it wired to the ignition or always on? If always on, any battery drain from LEDs on the devices? Any recommendations on RU-vid channels/videos for more info? I'm pretty green to wiring my own devices in-vehicle, thank you!

Very Nice. I'm looking to put radios in my new to me 22 f350. I'm eventually going to have a slide in camper, so the third brake light mount won't work for me. Love the 400 mine died after 5 years I think the 500 was a poor design decision on Yaesu's part, I'll probably go with the ic5100 since it has the similar head design and DStar will be a nice extra mode to have mobile. Do you still have the same setup?
@lawndartdesign

Still running the 400. I’ve had it for almost 10 years no. I’ve since upgraded the Kenwood to the NX5700H which is their current 2m commercial radio and has some awesome features. I’ve also moved away from iPads and now use a Garmin Tread XL. And am getting a starlink mounted up to the truck.

How did you route the cables up through your center of dash? I have a 3rd brake light with coax running up through my side footwells up into my passenger side map pocket against the console. Looking to pull both the coax and power cable for my CB up through to my ram mount infront of my B&O speaker as you did at 4:58 in this video. Help much appreciated!

Great video, this was extremely helpful for my build. I have the Weboost as well and I was wondering how you connected it to the bullet proof antenna mount cable to the booster input. I’m not an expert but I believe the two connections are different.

I think a radio is a better investment at first than a cell booster. They’re a “nice to have” but not essential.

What kind of tire carrier is that I have a super charged v8 5.0 and I can use the extra 15 gallons of fuel

This is excellent and a great job of production too. I have a '19 screw and am looking at my electrical for connecting an Aux battery and for setting up my comms. I need to get my HAM so that I can run a similar setup. I did the builtright dash and am really happy with it. Did you have to take the dash apart to tap into your 12v cig lighter? Where did you run the battery wiring into the back seat? Did you drill or did you come in and up through the plastic 'access' panel below the rear seats? Or did you run through the door sills and around to the back?
@lawndartdesign
@lawndartdesign 4 года назад
I don't run an aux battery. Power runs through an bulkheld grommet behind the glove box you have to cut a slit into, and then that runs down under the door sills/scuff panels, and into the back. We ran positive only, and complete the circuit by grounding it to a seat bolt/frame. All the wiring stays inside the vehicle. And yes you have to pull the top panel of the dash off, and remove the infotainment and AC controls, and then you can release the tabs for the power port/cig lighter, and from there you can pull that out and splice/solder into the cig harness to get switched power. Switched power is fine for dash accessories. But my radios and whatnot are constant hot because I don't want to have to run the truck to work the radios.
@grgoss1
@grgoss1 4 года назад
@@lawndartdesign This is super helpful!!!!!!!!! Thank you very much. I ran my outlet to an add a fuse for switched power as I didn't want to get into the dash any further than I already was. When I do my radios, will do the same as you and will add a low voltage cutoff for them and dashcam so that I have battery for starting if something gets left on by accident. For 'overlanding' will run the aux battery and BCDC charger too.. Need to design the whole system so it all makes sense. Thanks again!

Hi, what did you use for the protection strip on top of the dash, I'm mounting an iPad and want that protection, is it self adhesive felt?
@lawndartdesign
@lawndartdesign 3 года назад
Correct. It’s felt. I used 3m Velcro before and in the sun the adhesive becomes too strong and will pull the painted coating of the trim up with it.

@@lawndartdesign I'm gonna get both. GMRS is growing fast. In GA we have 14 linked repeater towers. Also on ham 2 meter and 70cm are dead. No one ever talks on the ham channels i monitor. Also I'm shocked that as q radio hobby everyone thats a ham is suppose to know all radio stuff. Murs, GMRS, frs, and others. Kind of shocked that know one knows about 462 band. It's on 70cm if I'm not mistaken.

@@lawndartdesign many of my people have both licenses. Many of them have Kenwood and Icom. I've reached repeater towers with my btech gmrs-v1 30 miles away. My wouxan kg1000 is coming soon for my mobile unit and i have a Kenwood on the way as well. I have 2 trucks. I have an 8 watt baofeng with everything programmed in. I know ham has more repeaters and stuff but gmrs is really fun and we talk tactical unlike hammies. I just hate the stupid test. We should only know the rules. Not everyone is gonna build a radio from scratch or set up a tower at their house. Most people grab a handy talk and thats it. There good to go with the exception of PL tones. Just fron GMRS alone i feel i know more than i ever have than being at a ham meet. It's definitely a fun hobby.
