Radio North Sea - Fire Bombing 1971 

Gosh! I actually remember listening to this live as a 14 year old.I wrote a corny poem about it as I was so distressed by what I had heard.I've still got it somewhere. I loved RNI and forced my dad to drive around with a Radio Northsea international car sticker in his back window. There were some great presenters and as FiddlerNick says,it was never boring.I heard Christopher Rainbow for the first time on that station.They played music you didn't hear anywhere else.

I remember being about 7 years old and hiding under the sheets trying to get Luxemburg on my little transistor radio, and finding this great station "RNI" instead. When I mentioned what I'd heard next day to my Mother she was a bit worried because she'd heard it was illegal to listen to the pirates! I was told not to listen, which of course made me all the more keen to. Some nights RNI came in well on that little radio, others not so good, but it really captured the imagination, a pirate ship!

Today, we had Private Radio stations, but only a few of them really make their own program.... Why dont they send a ship again on international waters to bring us good music :)

The person responsible was later arrested and jailed for a year. They endangered the lives of everyone on board the MEBO II, however unlawful Radio North Sea International itself was. One of many episodes in the short life of the station, a documentary double album was released by Jumbo Records in the 1970s - I think it has been re-released on CD in more recent years.

I remember this when i was a teenager. RNI was never boring to listen to!

It's strange to hear the happy music mixed with the desperation of the may-day call. Eerie sounding really. "Once again we have trouble, this time somebody's bombed us."

If you are sending a mayday, having music on in the background strikes me as very odd. Very odd indeed.

Remember hearing this as a 9 year old - there & then I started my 'love affair' with offshore radio!

@organisten I suppose it might be like Radio 4 using Sailing By for the Shipping Broadcast, so that as soon as you hear it tuning in you know the frequency and the station. Man of Action being North Sea's theme tune would have made people know what ship was on fire without hearing the words "Radio North Sea International". Well, that's what I'm guessing anyway.

I have the recording of this on vinyl! Ive listened to it many times and it has to rank as one of the wierdest/funniest 'live' transmissions made. Initially the DJ keeps his cool giving out the mayday call and correct co-ords. Then as the fire takes hold and the signal begins breaking up, he gets the co-ords wrong, then corrects them again. The whole scenario accompanied with Man of Action playing! Probably the only guy left onboard a doomed ship surrounded by melting vinyl!

And tomorow it´s 42 years ago. We are older I was a twen when it was, but it´s for me like yesterday. I love this time of FREE RADIO I´ll never be missed this time. I LOVE THE PIRAT STATIONS

She broadcast on 1367 Khz Mw and 6205 Khz in 49 metres band and also 100 Mhz VHF FM

I put the radio on, nothing, in school they were asking the teachers where has radio Caroline gone. no music radio can only be evil doing it, unable to pick up radio 1 on 247 up here in the north, I was devastated. My father said I have got a big ship for you, keep watching the news and then it came on the most powerful pop ship ever with global reach, and the evil that thinks that it is good, jammed, bombed, impounded. My father who just happens to be God.
