The Model 1 had no sound hardware. Square wave tones could be produced by outputting data to the cassette port and plugging headphones or an amplifier into the Data Out line. Some games used this ability for sound effects.
I want you to know that Frogger fascinated me so much, especially because of the music. I imagine that it was probably so hard for you to get it to work well, given that you had to update the screen and play the music at the same time. I'm a computer programmer, and I understand the difficulty of working that out given the limitations of the machine. Also, it must have been hard to do all those scrolling objects at once. Very impressive game!
I agree, that music has been stuck in my head even though I haven't used my TRS-80 in decades. But here is the funny part, I was listening to a podcast recently at 99percentinvisible.org/episode/mini-stories-volume-7/3/ and they featured a RU-vid video on the page from ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2YMH5ntJEZ0.html that contains the theme song from a Japanese cartoon called "Araiguma Rasukaru" that came out in 1977. Listen to that theme, and I think you will see where the inspiration for at least the major part of the TRS-80 Frogger music came from! But no matter where it originated, that music was a real earworm!
Definitely mind blowing considering the hardware has no graphics mode or any sound capabilities at all,but with some clever programming tricks,it just became possible🙏😁👍
I had a TRS-80 Model I when I was a kid and had this game. The music always fascinated me, because it was the only time I ever heard a Model I doing 2-part harmony. It was really pushing to limits of the computer to do the music and update the screen at the same time during gameplay.
