Many us either collect uranium glass or use it to fashion jewelry items. Because the glass contains the metal uranium (in several forms of oxide) it is a natural reaction to wonder about the level of exposure.
In this video I summarize and (over)simplify some of the aspects of ionizing radiation. Please note that I have left out much and only superficially mentioned some things. It is not intended to be a very in depth consideration. Rather, it will, I hope, be useful for folks considering wearing or dealing with uranium glass and help them to develop intuitions about risk and factor those things into their personal comfort level.
As always, you handle and deal with things at your own risk. Some risks are significantly large while others are vanishingly small. But I have yet to find anything with zero risk.
Enjoy!
Spoiler alert if you read this far, a small uranium glass cabochon will exhibit about the same amount of radiation as the background......meaning, no net impact.
