This is my all time favorite song ever. After recording this, Thom broke down in tears. You can hear his hurt in every second he sings this. Beautiful on every level.

Best band of the last four decades and possibly the last of the true greats.

One amazing thing about Radiohead is that these guys started this band when they were in high school, and it's still the same guys. Imagine playing with your friends as a teenager and decades later you still play together, but now you are one of the most revered bands in the world.

The greatest band of the last 30 years by a mile.

I was at this show (glastonbury festival 2003) there is 120'000 people in that crowd and it was unbelievable. They also played Glastonbury in 1997 just as OK Computer came out and i have to tell you, that gig was a spiritual experience, the field can hold over 100'000 people and it took us over an hour just to get in (its estimated that 200'000 squeezed in), it was wet, windy and muddy, the band had a few technical issues with equipment and played the whole show with no stage monitors (they couldn't hear themselves) and to this day its the best, most involved gig i have ever went to, the whole crowd and the band became one because of the conditions and it was truly special (some call it Glastonburys best ever performance and if you know who has played there its a massive compliment), i get chills just thinking about it! Yeah, you should defo look out some stuff from the 1997 show. Radiohead are the last of the Greats as we know them, top 10 of all time, easily.

The angst and living in this modern world. Radiohead captures that so well. And Coldplay captured a bit of that in their first album

I hear a lot of the influence "The Bends" had on Coldplay's first two albums. After that, Coldplay managed to hit a level of mainstream and decided to go for that. Not my cup of tea, but I get it.

To the question - having seen Radiohead some years ago in a packed O2 arena, I have no doubt both bands would fill it without much effort, but it would be a very different audience ;)

I like studio versions of their songs more than the live versions. Love both but for me they shine on the actual albums the most. Maybe it's because Nigel GODrich is an excellent producer i don't know.

I love this song and the entire 'The Bends' album. Yea, it might sound almost cliche depressive 90s guitar rock nowadays, but only because the band completely nailed it back then. Arguably Coldplay (and other bands) built on this sound, added some U2 and opted for the more commercial pop path (at least from 'X&Y' onwards). "He used to do surgery/for girls in the 80s/but gravity always wins" is quite a hilarious line.

I like Coldplay just fine - some Radiohead fans - and they're my personal favorite band easily, (probably admittedly fanatically - though Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray Vaughan are right on their heels) have the reputation - earned - of being obnoxious about a lot of things, especially Coldplay, but they've written some beautiful songs. However, to offer my take on your theoretical, Radiohead is so massively beloved in their niche it goes well beyond and into the greater musical ether - 7 of their 9 albums are Grammy nominees, they were named to the Rock Hall of Fame the 2nd year they were eligible (obviously that is arguable as an accolade but its not for nothing) and they've had 5 albums in the Rolling Stone (again debate worthy but still an accolade) top 500 albums list - only maybe 10 or fewer other artists have that achievement - that is not to fanboy Radiohead (as I pathetically just did) but for context - Radiohead doing a show would sellout in under 3 minutes if they announced one right now, it wouldn't even be close. That isn't a knock on Coldplay but maybe as you are hopefully seeing or experiencing Radiohead is a standout in all of music in their unique way, and that is their true greatest accomplishment (along with oodles of incredible music). In their 30 years since "Creep" debuted them, they remain active with the same 5 members(very unusual - but part of their sort of anti-star mellow depressing quality that turns may people off to them - they are just chill and like each other and making music they like when they like), producer and even album cover artist, their lead guitar player Johnny Greenwood is one of the most currently sought out movie music composers in film, as well as amongst modern classical music composers; he has been nominated for an Academy Award, does all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, so the insane and amazing sound of "There Will be Blood" for example is his work (kind of a fortunate trait for your lead guitarist to posses) - they really are just this unique mix of artists who have led a journey that puts them into rare air and that is all words - meaningless compared to the amazing music they have made every step of the way, that I am glad you all are taking to so far and perhaps will continue to as you hear more. Gotta sub now - your style and chill humor and thoughtful remarks are very cool.

I'm not so sure about stage fright, but Thom had a really tough time coping with the amount of touring they had, which eventually led to the beautiful 'How to Disappear Completely' on Kid A

lead guitar and multi instrumentalist is Jonny Greenwood, he is also a world class composer up for 1-2 best Oscar Score nominations this year for Spencer and Power of the Dog.

💜 Sweet reaction, guys. Man, it's been so long since I've listened to my Radiohead albums, and after watching this, I took the albums out of my collection and gonna visit them again. I absolutely love the vocals and acoustic guitar on this song.

About the question, well, Radiohead is also very famous around the world, and you asked about a concert in England, of course both bands would sell out I think. Now, if you ask me for example in my country, Colombia... I had the opportunity to see both bands live and I also know that here in Colombia, Coldplay has more fans because they are more mainstream, you even said that... Like easy to listen to and more "radio friendly" xD So Coldplay sells tickets much faster (in my country).

Glastonbury 1997 1st headline at the festival. Micheal Eavis the legendary founder of the festival said "They are the best band I've ever seen and are welcome to Headline whenever they want to" The festival was founded in 1971. They are an incredible live band dudes.

Anyway, they have recently started covering this and it’s amazing. It’s never been a favourite of mine, but Conor’s voice really suits it. Incidentally, NBT sold out the O2 arena in 2021 and it was the best gig I’ve ever been to!

I think you got it about right when you said Radiohead were staying true to their experimental roots and darker themes. I loved early Coldplay but very quickly they just lost relevance for me. An interesting question would be who would sell more tickets between Radiohead and Coldplay in the US. When Radiohead toured in the 00's you couldn't get tickets at all!

Coldplay would probably sell more tickets....maybe, if it was the US, but Radiohead would do the better concert. And connect in a deeper way with the audience. Coldplay fans tend to be a bit shallower, in line with Coldplay music I guess. A better comparison to Radiohead would be Muse. Who also piss all over Coldplay.

17:03 Thom Yorke has trouble with his eyes too, being born with muscle issues in one eye. If you look at different videos of him, even off stage, he sometimes looks half asleep

You’re dead right about Coldplay, their first album Parachutes was an amazing piece of work, its still an album i love and listen to but they quickly became huge and fell into a specific sound and stuck to that formula unfortunately. They’ve just made paint by numbers big sound commercial music since. Hey, it work for them but its a shame all the same.

What is the comparison with Coldplay about, they had a big hit and bascially kept remaking that song, that song was good in and of itself, but not that good, that I want to hear 200 variations of it, while Radiohead with each album keep creating masterpieces.

If you like Coldplay, you should check out Stairsailor, same era but Starsailor are far superior without getting recognition.

They'd both sell out the O2/ Wembley. But assuming no limit on the number of people, Coldplay would sell more. More mainstream, a wider appeal.Having seen both bands live a few times - Coldplay is the more entertaining I'd say - it's more of an all round show. But from a musical point of view, Radiohead is probably better and more interesting.

Coldplay has some very good albums (A Rush Of Blood or Viva La Vida), but they went way more mainstream after that and more "pop", while Radiohead went more experimental and electronic. I think Chris Martin said once that he loves Radiohead but that he himself just can't do without those catchy easy melodies, that he can't let go of this formula because he just enjoys it too much (so I actually don't think they are doing this because they want to sell tickets or albums, they genuinely like that kind of music). That's why especially modern Coldplay sounds generic in my opinion. It is way easier to get into Coldplay for the mainstream crowd though, so to answer your question, I do think they have the bigger fanbase, because the mainstream is just that much bigger. Both bands would probably fill a big stadium though.
