I’m 57 losing my job, in debt, and miserable. I have loved Radiohead since the beginning, and I cannot explain it but their sadness and introspection releases me and heals me simultaneously. Listening again for the first time.
I'm close to your age and I feel you...I think one answer might be massive change...sell everything and move out of North America...it's become toxic...I'm moving to Thailand in a couple years and I'm pretty sure a new culture change will inspire a new me because it feels so much better when I go for long vacations there. Just a thought.
Eleanor _Your comment hits the meaning of this songs so we'll. And johnglues commet is so true, I struggled to fit in all my teenage years and now at 55 I realise I fitted in fine as everyone was the same awkward person full of self doubt and anxiety. Some just hide it better. Much luv Gaz.x
Glad you returned to Radiohead. Many have "The Bends" as their favorite album though there are a few other great ones. I was in love with a girl many years ago who loved Radiohead and this was her favorite song. She passed on a while back and I rarely allow myself to listen to this track , I broke my rule to see you guys react to it though still hurts to hear it. The power of music eh?
The Bends is a phenomenal album...if you havent heard the song Just....amazing song which goes along with one of the most intriguing music videos you have ever seen
Great shout. 'Roads' and 'Wandering Star' are also brilliant. I've previously suggested in Jay and Amber's comments for some Portishead (and also some PJ Harvey for 'Female Friday') so hopefully they'll check them out soon.
This song is about a plastic surgeon. "He used to do surgery on the girls in the 80s, but gravity always wins." And about all the fakeness in the world, that's what wears him out.
Thats only one verse of the song which ends with it wears him out then the lyrics move on from that- if I had to say what I thought it was about I’d say it’s ultimately about “more and more people pretending to be something they’re not (like plastic trees) and the need and longing for a genuine relationship in a world filled with materialistic shallow self centred, enpty people who are more concerned of their external image than finding anything genuine.
Radiohead is one of the greatest bands ever. Thom Yorke's lyrics and vocals with Jonny Greenwood's guitar and the entire band's compositions are just so good.
I love the church organ music in this. Such a simple affecting song. Their albums The Bends and OK Computer are just incredible. Music you would want in your top 10 if you were isolated on an island.
Such a great time to be a teenager in the UK when this album came out. Music at this time was so amazing. The scene in London was fantastic and I feel so blessed that I was part of the inner circle of it all. Seeing all these amazing bands and meeting and hanging out with so many cool people. Great memories 😊
Beautifiul as always. Radiohead is one of those bands that is consistently overlooked. A person has to be able to face and cope with the epic flow of emotions that this band evokes in them. Sometimes their music makes you find yourself soaring with wonder and smiling with joy while crying from heartache all at the same time. A brilliant blend of music, lyrics and vocals.
@@starlit_hawser11 My bad. God forbid I feel they should be elevated to an even higher status than they are given in relation to some other bands that are more talked about and celebrated. I didn’t mean to say something that was so opposite to your world view. I’ll remember to check with you first before I post anything again. Again, my apologies for my dis to Radiohead.
My fav Radiohead song, though "Karma Police" is a close second. Meanwhile, please look up Travis, a Scottish band. Fran Healey's vocals are so unique and the songs are poetry. 😉 (Look up Travis's Storytellers episode to get that joke.) I think Amber would absolutely adore "Turn" and "Flowers in the Window".
I never see anyone on here reacting to Street Spirit (Fade Out) from the same album, which I find surprising because it's a hauntingly beautiful song with an equally stunning video. Give it a go, why don't you.
For some reason that song always reminds me of the Bunyip song from Dot and the Kangaroo...I think just the starting notes, maybe just me but that terrified me as a child so I think Street Spirit has an even bigger impact!
Some amazing lyrics - She lives with a broken man A cracked polystyrene man Who just crumbles and burns He used to do surgery For girls in the eighties But gravity always wins
100% agree. Loved Pablo Honey when it came out. Was like a straight up rock album. Then The Bends came out and blew me away with its totally different vibe. Especially all the B sides from that album.
Thanks Jay and Amber to reacting to my favourite band. If you want more haunting beauty "Street Spirit (Fade out) " should be next on your list. If you want their rock side "Just" will show you their versatility and both have videos as deep as the songs. "Paranoid Android" has beauty and rock and all 3 songs will blow your minds in different ways. You've only scratched the surface of a deep, deep rabbit hole.
I agree with both of those choices. "Just" would be a great one for J&A to experience a little more of a rock vibe in Radiohead's sound (and I think Jay, in particular, would really love the guitar), and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" is just beautiful and haunting (as well as being a personal favorite).
I think you have already heard that it’s: If I could be who you wanted….not if I could be who I wanted to be. Makes it even more heartbreaking. Love Radiohead and this song.
I got the call that my Beloved Grandma Nonna had just passed, got in the car to head over and this song was on. I cried like never before.. This song will always be special to me.. Thank you for this!
One of my favorite songs of theirs, and that’s saying a lot, as they have an insanely great discography… thematically, they are similar to PinkFloyd when it comes to themes of isolation derived from technology, blind consumerism, thoughtless following, etc. “The Bends’ is the 90’s “Wish you were here” and “OkComputer’ is the 90’s “DarkSide of the Moon”
I’ve came to known this song back in the early 90’s, there was an powerful inserting about Down’s Syndrome, homeless and respect with fake plastic trees playing in the background during commercial breaks on tv, the song was “lost” in my memory for quite some years, finally found it in the mid 10’s. If anyone is curious just search for Radiohead Carlinhos, unfortunately the subs are only in Brazilian Portuguese
Another great British band from the same era well-worth checking out is SUEDE (often called The London Suede in the USA). Start with "The Wild Ones" if you liked this song. Brett Anderson is one of the best singers, period!
I so love this song. It's all about faking it until it works or walk away from it, especially in a romantic relation. Thom Yorke has so much emotion in this song that it gets me every time. Thank you for reacting to it.
I read an article where Thom Yorke said he saw Jeff Buckley in concert and it completely changed the way he approached his vocals. So yeah.. Check out Jeff Buckley.
Yes Squad!!! Love this song so much and loved seeing you both fall in love with it too- please please give Weird Fishes/Arpeggi and Jigsaw Falling Into Place a play, both songs will blow your minds I guarantee it, love to you both x
For years, I always thought 99 Luftballons has been my favourite song.... but having finally heard this song again but in a new light, I think Radiohead has pipped Nena to the gold medal.
Every time in the middle of the song when the guitars kick in and the vocals soar all I can picture is Ethan Hawke running through a city at night in the rain to find Winona Ryder who is sitting in her window seat watching the storm so they can both tell each other they were wrong and the end credits can start because that’s the most 90’s thing I can think of.😂
"It's going to be emotional" - This is a song I listened to over and over after a tough life event. Thom York is the voice that could carry me to the next world...
Another Brit commenting. Always enjoy your reactions. It's clear that you really engage with each one. You've just reviewed one of my personal favourites. The live Glastonbury version you should here to really appreciate his vocal talent
The background in the sonic landscape of this song was the beginning of the sound that (I feel) hits an all time peak in Faust Arp from In Rainbows. And I’m not just talking about a Radiohead peak. I’m talking about ALL MUSIC ANYWHERE. Genius is the only suitable adjective.
I LOVE me some RH and I have a crush on Thom LOL for years. After Chris Cornell, he is my favorite male vocalist. RH is one of the most talented and innovative bands.
Imagine hearing this album for the first time on CD back when it was released. Incredible. Their last real "rock" album. OK Computer kind of changed everything for them. Their musical maturity over their careers is pretty amazing. Please play more of their songs on your channel. 🙏 🍻
I think you guys, especially you Jordan, are ready for the luscious, sophisticated "House of Cards" from the In Rainbows album. I already know Amber will love it.
I’m a Radiohead fanatic, saw them twice live and they’re the two best concerts I’ve ever been to. If I had to pick my favorite song from them, this is it.
@@jameshannagan4256 of course it’s all subjective. I love all decades of music. My formultive years being born in the 60’s but basically growing up in the 70’s makes me partial to that decade. I wasn’t trying to start an argument or saying you didn’t know what you were talking about. Just giving my opinion also.
@@jamesdamiano8894 I'm with you for the most part i'm almost 60 so I kind of got the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and forward. I pretty much was in agreement with you but the first 5 years of the 60s were pretty bad that was my point. I think Radiohead is up there with bands like Pink Floyd, Zepplin and the Beatles they are the last great band of the band era the music industry has changed so much and bands are kind of history.
@@jameshannagan4256 yeah at least in the 60’s through the 80’s and maybe some 90’s you had consistently good bands and music. Now a days I can’t think of any overall good new bands. Just the holdovers from previous times. You might occasionally get a decent song but that’s about it.
One of my favourite songs of all time, and my favourite songs to sing in the shower, because I can. Still. It's "in a town full of Robert Plants." I don't compromise on that line.
Thank you so much for playing this, it took me back to places and emotions that mean a lot. If you are going to play another Radiohead song then Street Spirit (Fade Out) would be so appreciated x
YES!!!!!!! Finally getting to my fave Radiohead song! I love this one so much. The whole "Bends" album is flawless, but this one (and "Black Star") just kill me. So happy you got to hear this tune!
OK Computer, The Bends, Kid A, Hail to the Thief, and In Rainbows are 5 of my top 10 GOAT albums, and there are great tunes on all their other albums too. Many bands today make great singles, but Radiohead is one of the last bands that make great albums.
Something you guys will definitely enjoy: "Lover, You Should've Come Over" by Jeff Buckley (specially the live version). When Radiohead was trying to record "Fake Plastic Trees" in 1994 they were having a hard time with it so they took a break and attended a Jeff Buckley gig in London. Jeff Buckley's vocals left Thom Yorke so stunned that he went back to the studio, recorded a take of the song with nothing but an acoustic guitar and wept afterwards. The band then overdubbed their parts on top of it and that's the version you've just heard.
There are so many amazing songs from this era of Radiohead, but i really think that yall are ready for paranoid android now!! Enjoy you guys! Peace/love
Such great memories, I was in my mid 20's when this came out and it was a great time to be alive in the UK, saw Radiohead twice at Glastonbury in the 90's too, when you could still climb over the wall, those were the days lol, always been one of my favourite bands, you should check out 'Sleaford Mods' for something a little different, proclaimed by Iggy Pop to be the greatest rock and roll band in the world! Their 2017 set at Glastonbury was amazing and there's an incredible documentary about them called 'Bunch of Kunst'.
Kunst is Art in German, but it serves as a perfect double entendre in this context, if you do ever watch them you'll get what I mean, they're definitely a gritty band!
One of my favorites. I’d love for you to react to Paranoid Android…the first song that showed me this was truly a unique band. And Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is their best song in my opinion…it’s the closest I get to having a Pink Floyd experience listening to Radiohead
Managed to see Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead’s new band - The Smile - live in London last weekend. They are both musical geniuses and have been producing incredible music for nearly forty years!
I was introduced to the Bends and Radiohead circa 1997.. My girlfriend at the time was a fan and this was the soundtrack to our tour of the west of Scotland and Skye (my homeland) that summer.. it was heatwave..( it does happen) and we drove all around whilst this album was on the car stereo.. I always link these sounds to those days and the wonderful scenery..an album with every song a banger.. hearing these songs immediately transports me back to that fantastic summer. I went on to buy every album.. a great band. a great reaction from you guys.
Hoping someday y'all will check out SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK ALIEN by Radiohead - it's very "Pink Floydian" to me - a head trip in headphones for sure!! Also "Exit Music (From A Film)" is such an amazing track - it's featured as the uncredited song played during the end credits of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO + JULIET film - which y'all gotta watch - Radiohead has another great song on the soundtrack, alongside Garbage, and Butthole Surfers!! Keep smiling y'all!!
Oh my God I’ve cried to this song so many times after my husband died. So relatable to the loss of her mind. Of course I’ve come a long way from those days. This song is deep, dark but beautifully crafted. ♥️
Chuffed you enjoyed too. So many favourites that change over the years from them. That says it all. Currently it is - How to Disappear Completely Not everyone's cup of tea but for me it just hits so hard in what I took from it. Beautiful ❤
Theres a video on youtube of radiohead performing their in rainbows album "live from the basement". Sit down one evening, turn the lights low, and play that. Its majestic.
We all also have to pretend everything is ok to protect other people. They don’t need others to unload everything because they might also be going through things themselves The borderline for me is people who believe portraying their perfect life is in some way healthy. Every single person who has lived and died and will ever live or die has some level of inner turmoil. It’s nice to be aware and give people space.
