When Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien was learning how to play the guitar as a child, he wasn’t too interested in breathtaking axe acrobatics. As much as he respects that ability, he preferred players who found a subtle and unique way to incorporate their style into the framework of a song.
"I didn’t connect to lead guitarist. I didn’t connect to fast guitarists or blues," he said. "That wasn’t my thing. My thing was these kind of sonics - the sound within the context of a great song and I love that kind of thing."
In this exclusive interview, O'Brien discusses how he learned to play guitar and his unique approach to the instrument when writing music.

I love Ed, he’s so underrated. Jonny is a hell of a lead and Thom plays awesome rhythm, but I think Ed is the one who brings a lot of atmosphere to their sound. I hate when people are like “he’s just the good looking one in the band”. Bullshit, he’s a total legend in his own right

Curtis Young yes, but he is also the good looking one. In all seriousness, though, try to imagine (say) How To Disappear Completely without his atmospheric playing. He adds so much to their songs.

Ed is such a sweet and peaceful guy. I could listen to him talk all day. Can someone please get him to narrate an audio book?

I really, really respect this guy's attitude, perspective, humility and approach to the guitar. I have the exact same influences and creating the soundscapes through the riffs is so much more creative than playing 500 notes in a minute.

Love hearing musicians talk about this kinda stuff even though I don't play.

You should learn to play even for the fun of it!

+Dom's Sketch Cast If you are interested, why not give a shot? I don't think you'll regret it. I got to say it takes time though.

Son Goku Eh, I feel like I've dumped all of my chips into visual art and writing. I know how long it's taken me to get to where I am with drawing. Years. Like 15+. I know it'd take even longer for music. But maybe I'm just making excuses and should try anyway.

I see. It depends how much time you give to it and where you want to lead. It may be your relaxation way, or your goal in life. And I think, in a relatively short time, like few months, you would be playing basic songs which would satisfy you and make you ache to learn more. But keep in mind that it changes person to person. Borrow a guitar, for example, if you don't to spend any money. And ask someone you know if he/she could teach you or take some lesssons from a decent teacher. I am a guitar player so I made these comments acording to my experiences. Other instruments may be different. Also picking which instrument to play is another issue. It's reeeaaly more different than listening to music. You will see what I mean :D. Sorry for the long wall of text. :P

i agree with ed,when i see steve vai or van halen shredding it doesn't affect me at all,i know they're gods but as i see it,it's just a dude playing different scales but ed's effects in all i need or climbing up the walls can take me to different places and make me feel the music he's a real inspiration

A man after my own heart. I felt a failure because I couldn't and didn't want to "shred"... now in my forties, I don't feel a failure. I just love my guitar playing more than ever and am thankful my guitar has been there for 3O odd years.

First guitar of my was a 89 or 90 Squier Strat (I've put some of the tunes I've composed with it on my channel) and just before I clicked on this vid I viewed someone doing a cover of "Lets Dance"! :-) It may come in different variations but we all look and hope for inspiration..

He stayed at the same campsite as me in France when I was 6 and I met his kids and talked to them and everything. Didn't like them that much to be honest but looking back on it I release how little I realised what a famous guitarist of such a famous band I was in the presence of. Hell, I played ping ping with his son Salvador and won. Salvador cheated though...

777 like.. god i feel lucky Yersterday when i checked the time it was 11:11 and i had 11 battery precent. Neveemind the thing is! Im totatlly feel ed , hes so special musician and gets me this fire for writing great songs and then findind the right rhythem and sound..rather then just master tons of scals like i was doing in the last days.. we need put out the love to the thing and deatch ourselves from the outcome. Were all going nowhere . So the playing itself is all that matters. Whos going to be in radiohead show in chicago next month? :)

No ones “self taught” if you’ve asked someone questions about how to play then you’re just learning. some people use books the internet or lessons I use the internet and books(rarely I hate reading) to be self taught you literally have to discover chords.
