At 2:11 on the official video here on RU-vid, you can see 11 people gathering around the man on the ground. Then around 2:40 is when the cop joins the group, making it a total of 12 people who hear and "fall" for the story the man on the ground tells them... Later, the camera pans over all the people on the ground and there are easily dozens, but I think there was 12 in the first group. I'm pretty sure this interpretation is generally correct.

@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Your video is awesome! I've been trying to figure out what must be a clue, but haven't gotten anywhere. The cop's uniform doesn't have any insignia or badges (unusual for a cop's uniform) except for "262" on the epaulette. I've looked for bible verses ( especially gospels 2:62 and 26:2) that might apply and haven't found anything compelling. Any thoughts on what (if anything) that might mean?

My take was that it was never about the man on the floor or what he said, it's about the people asking him. They won't leave him alone, they have to find out what's going on, even if they know it's not in their best interests. Hence, "You do it to yourself, you do." - The lyrics in the chorus.

Just is one of my all-time favorite videos. When I saw this in 95, I thought the video was about people's curiosity. How curiosity can be so contagious and feed into a crowd. All the guy wanted to do is lay down but the mob wanted to know why. He then gives them what they want but curiosity killed the cat. But after watching this video, I see the religious theme. This was a great analysis of a great video.
@MrMurph73

I think I found another piece of the puzzle to support your theory. The clock in the room where the band are playing is always stuck at 20:25. In the Bible - John 20:25 - is a passage about doubting Thomas (Thom) - "So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” . Video ends with Thom and the band looking out the window and seeing the messiah for themselves.

Ooh, this is a super intriguing take on Just. I remember being so obsessed with the video when it came out that I enlisted my deaf mother to try and lip read the man, but she complained about the weird angles and also did not care about my fascination with the video enough to humour me. I love this take and I think there is more than enough evidence to support it, unlike a lot of theories I’ve seen over the years. Especially how the bath/baptism part fits, because that always felt like a bit of a loose thread in a lot of other takes. Excellent detective skills!

I spoke to my sister, she was in the video, one of the crowd lying down. They filmed this outside Liverpool Street Station. When they discussed it was about, what if Jesus was to come again, and just be an ordinary bloke, how would life and those in it inadvertently treat him. Its almost says treat everyone like Jesus because you never know if he is incognito, quietly judging or taking note, making a list. Perhaps it judgement day. Great theory though, l'm not sure if the man says I know a way. Maybe its f why?

A well analyzed interpretation of the music video and song! This is a unique theory and one I never heard before. You could be very well be right sir! Some things to note is that if you seen any interviews of Radiohead during The Bends era, Thom said that what the man said in the MV is a secret between all the band members, the director and actor. So they only know what they said. Your theory also works well in the context in regards to the themes of The Bends. The Bends themes revolve around becoming famous and that rise to stardom quickly as Radiohead had become with “Creep.” This song made them become famous too quickly and they weren’t ready with critiques claiming they were “going to save rock.” Radiohead weren’t a fan of this and wasn’t sure how to react. This plays well into how celebrities become “false messiahs” and worshiped on the same level of Jesus. Radiohead weren’t really a fan of such fame and stardom thus The Bends was written as a reaction against that. A critique on American, Hollywood and Celebrity lifestyle. This theory makes sense when put into context with everything The Bends album is about. Well done sir and a unique theory nonetheless. Fun fact: ‘Just’ was also a competition between Thom and Jonny to see how many chords they could put into the song lol.

I pretty much recognised this story from the first time I saw it. For years I've had many friends say I was wrong, that it couldn't be and yet to me it was so obvious. Probably because of my many years of church attendance from a child and familiarity with the Christian narrative. Plenty of friends said i was projecting etc so it was good to see someone seperate come to all the identical conclusions that I have (except for the untitled words). I see a similar motif in Unkle's Rabit in your Headlight (Thom Yorke's on vocals. Thankyou. Very nicely put together.

I have watched your cut of his lips over a dozen times, and I can't say I agree that is what he says. The lips look more like an "f" form, like fear or feel, not seen. There is no proof the line was cut and played out of order. It is only convenient to the interpretation. The story follows a linear progression the whole way through. There was no reason to jump backwards for that one moment. I've also watched that part of the original video over a dozen times. When reading his lips in the order presented, it looks more like, "I'll tell you what I fear/feel w-”, and then it cuts off, leaving it open to interpretation. Of course, that's just me. What the hell do I know.
@MrKeefelm
@MrKeefelm 2 года назад
So I always understood the lyric to be about narcissism, as I believe Thom once introduced it that way. People attempting to manipulate others for their own gain. I never really noticed the religious references in the video but it seamed to carry the idea of non-conformity and counter culture ending up as mainstream culture as the big boys bought it up. In the 90s the independent music scene along with alternative comedy and film become popular, eventually everyone ended up metaphorically lying on the floor meaning it was no longer alternative, unique or interesting!

I always thought this song was about OCD.. and how if you have particularly bad OCD, you basically live a hellish existence that you bring on yourself, and yet it is a syndrome that no one would ask for. If people only understood what it was like, they would also have the same crippling phobias and fears. In a way, Radiohead's music represents those types of ideas, or should I say moods, and so once that mood is transmitted from one person to another, the other person is then cursed with those thoughts.

If your interpretation here isn't exact, it is compelling and likely close. Unless the director comes out and states otherwise, this is the best case I've heard for the video's meaning. I'm consistently floored by your analysis and presentation, and this is no exception. Relieved to have a mind like yours passionate about our era of music, giving us a different lens of the great artists that emerged at the time. I too tend to favor the Bends (and OK Computer) to Kid A MNesiac and Radiohead's later work. The former to me come across as the work of skilled craftsmen, whereas the latter, while wholly unique and pleasant sonically and visually (there is a ton of artwork accompaniment and I own all of it haha), feels more improvisational and free form. Perhaps, it's like comparing renaissance and modern art? Anyway, I'm sure I've offended a lot of fans, and that wasn't the intent, rather trying to understand the evolution of this incredible band. By stating that The Bends is your favorite album, I would love hear more about this and your take on the band's development in a future series. Interestingly, when I see younger generations talk about Radiohead, I can't help but notice they put Kid A at the top of their list and it miffs me how people can overlook the two masterpieces that came before it. So... what drove their change (bored genius, improvisational creativity, expansion of new technology, personal relationships?). "Just" a thought!

I first heard a track from The Bends (Fade Out) by sheer accident at the end of a tape that had something else taped over it, leaving just the long outro & keening towards the end. I’d previously been listening to Joy Division & I think I was stoned. The JD track, who’s name I don’t immediately remember & Fade Out are now somehow spot-welded in my memory as if they were meant to be together. I’ve never forgotten that one listening session, tripping & dozing, because it nailed a number of personal favourite songs forever. Could have been a lot worse.

It looks a lot like he's saying "I'll Tell You Why". If this is true, then it would mean that as an audience we'll never know, as it cuts off. Also taking into account Thom's reluctance to tell anyone what he says, it is likely we'll never know. Although as the clip is cut off at the end, they may have filmed him saying a full sentence but just cut it down. If this is the case, then The Band and the director would have known what he says but it was edited out of the final video and it is possible that no copy of the full clip exists. This is only my interpretation, and it stems off of what he says, therefore i could probably be very wrong but i thought i'd shoot my shot and see if anyone else in these comments sees this too. This clip is a hard one because it is riddled with confirmation bias as to what you want him to say. And if you think you've figured it out, you'll convince yourself it's right the more and more you watch it. I can truly understand why this is so highly debated now. As the pot stirs, the mystery only increases with the addition of different interpretations. I believe it is important to reiterate that i might be wrong (couldn't help myself with that one sorry), but then again we all could be, and on and on the mystery ensues. Thanks for reading this (If you have). And by "you" i just mean anyone, I'd love to hear some feedback so feel free to reply to this with what you guys think.

I think you are probably right about what he said-however, and I don't know if this has been pointed out, but that isn't an American copper. It kind of looks like one because of the aviator sunglasses and the bike is an American police bike (with the star and not the traditional yellow and blue ones in Britain)... but, the copper's uniform is definitely British (at least approximately). American motorcycle police rarely wear a jacket and never a blazer. Their shirts are often short-sleeved and are blue or khaki or black, and they don't have numbers on their shoulders nor wear ties. This is possibly just a wardrobing mistake. But, personally, I think the director just wanted the approximation of authority, one that would appeal to both the British and American audiences (and global audiences). Hence, he split the difference. And, if one still wants to draw a comparison with Ancient Rome, maybe the British/American duality of the copper represents the dominant cultural imperialism of both nations, in 1995. ps. this is just a nitpick. Overall, I like your interpretation. It makes sense.

It's a city of London police officer. The police station is 100m from where this video was shot. Agreed a British officer ordinarily wouldnt wear tunic order but in the City police around 1995 its possible. Also their bikes weren't emblazoned with the yellow and blue reflective livery as they are now. Most police vehicles back then were plain white with a thin orange stripe hence the jam sandwich nicknames. You can see the City of London police insignia on his white helmet. Traffic officers wear white caps or helmets or did in the 90s

For example, more on why certain musical phrases and certain chord progressions grab the human heart would be brilliant. Because we know it when we hear it, but most of us haven’t the foggiest how or why they work so deeply. I’ve no theology, but I was a longtime choirboy in C of E when I was young & recall being deeply affected by Handel, Beethoven & especially Purcell. Thomas Talis too (not sure I’ve the right name, but there’s someone who’s considered utterly foundational to the sound of English choral music & who had a long career at it, centuries ago. At this moment in human history, if anything I’m moving in the opposite direction to you, religiously. You had it beaten into you. By contrast, I was starved of it as a child & I think my personal choice to sing was something inside me wanting to be in those churches in the 1960s. I had forgotten all about watching this video on MTV! I love your take on it. Back in the day, here's what I thought it was about... In the first scene I assumed the man either attempted to or DID drown himself in the tub. So, if he survived a near death experience, maybe he saw nothing on the other side. He laid on the ground feeling helpless - there is no point in living & no point in dying (I know how dark this reads! - It seemed like more of a philosophical debate in my head) OR, if the man had actually drowned in the tub, this was something that had to play out for him to process the "afterlife" I had thought it was possible that he was saying "God, forgive me" & "I can't tell you" because of what he did. The part without the subtitles would then have been him telling people (or confessing) about the way in which he died.

This reminds me of a horror short that was part of an anthology called XX. It wasn't a very good anthology and it was universally panned, but it had an intriguing concept for its first entry - a family (typical "nuclear" family, husband and wife with a boy and a girl), preparing for Christmas, sees a man on a bus with a box. The boy goes up to the man and asks him what's in the box, and the man opens it, but no one else gets to see it. Later at home, the boy refuses to eat. He doesn't eat for five days, and his parents take him to the doctor. The doctor can find nothing physically wrong with him, but he refers him to a psychiatrist (which is never followed up on later). When the doctor tells the boy that he will die if he doesn't eat, the boy responds, "So?" More days pass and the boy still doesn't eat. The parents grow desperate as his sister grows curious. The girl asks the boy what he saw and he whispers it to her. Now she doesn't want to eat either. Finally, the dad is overcome by curiosity and asks the girl. The same thing happens. By the time Christmas rolls around, the mother is the only one who hasn't been affected. The other 3 family members grow increasingly emaciated and then die (for convenience to the plot I presume, they don't get feeding tubes and the extreme weight loss happens within a few weeks). The mother is left alone, desiring to know what killed her family, and then the short ends. I know it's off-topic, but it's a similar concept.

I agree, that’s the sharpest hook for those of us not looking particularly closely, but with just enough awareness of scripture to ring a bell, faintly. It did the same to me at the time, but I don’t recall having the slightest interest in more back then. Having too good a time buying stuff on credit….

I think your take on the video is fascinating and, as far as I can tell, correct. But as for the song, I think you're way off. The song's about depression, mental illness in general. The "stink" is being depressed, and it makes you docile, like a cow. But he sings the "holy cow" like an exclamation, like saying "holy cow, look at what you've done to yourself!" Then "You do it to yourself, and that's what really hurts." That's depression, all right. You talk yourself into a self-hatred and it sucks worse than anything. "Won't get my sympathy hanging out the fifteenth floor"- need I say anything? Suicidal much? Anyway, that's my take
@Atlas65
@Atlas65 Год назад
You are 100% correct, that is what bothered me about his interpretation of the song, because I knew it was about depression. I think that it has even been mentioned that Thom wrote the song about a friend of his which was closing himself off and rejecting any help... What the video creator does not comment on for example this line: "You've changed the locks three times He still comes reeling through the door". - How does this line fit into the Jesus metaphor?
@HorribleHomeVideo
@HorribleHomeVideo Год назад
Here's a take nobody connects so allow me to add it here. In the 1980s twilight zone remake series is an episode that I believe also inspired this music video. The episode is called "need to know" A man learns some deep wisdom and goes mad. He then tells one person who tells another and so on. Those who know the secret to life and everything.. end up mad and even murder. But most similar to this video. They just give up om "normal life" as tho nothing matters. I suspect this show based on a short story by Sidney Sheldon may have inspired this music video. There are differences but the similar idea of one man telling people a secret leading them to end up giving up on everything is oddly the same at its core.

Stopped @ 5:48 so I can give my honest input before I hear what's coming next. We personally I never felt that what he said was important. I think it was a metaphor for something else. How they don't see you until you're in the way and then they suddenly care about you. How we are just a number or upon in a game that we don't even have control over. Until you're in the way. And whatever he said open their eyes today. That's always been my opinion
@MrThanoskakourhs

I understand it this way: The man on the floor is like Thom. The way the crowd approaches him is as if they come to see ''his'' dead body. He feels shame by expressing himself in an eccentric , suicidal, honest sound in front of all these people and Just wants to be alone. He does not really want anyone to get the point of his music, hence he remains silent as a way of protecting them from also harming themselves, like he did by exposing himself in the first place. In the end he spoils the secret and everyone ends up mesmerized- into complete stillness by his sonic expression, just like the way they would be affected by an messiah like figure.

There’s no way he says “I’ve seen a way” he just says “I’ve seen way” Which is only the start of a sentence. For example “I’ve seen way… too many bad films recently, …worse reactions to something like that, …better ideas expressed in interpretive dance. I don’t think we get to see the whole answer, you for a moment are watching the band watch what’s going on at this point. Also when the man lies down he is shocked, like he’s been struck with an idea. Not exactly the facial expression of someone about to con people. As I read someone else say here, that I always took the lyrics to someone mentally trying to escape the baggage a bad relationship. But I think your base premise here is sound. After all a relationship with a deity can have lasting effects as well.

You make a very good case. Extremely plausible. I just want to add this. Kafka’s ‘Parables & Paradoxes’ contains a short piece called ‘The Savages’ that must’ve been an inspiration for the ‘Just’ video. I know Thom is a fan of Kafka and some of Jamie’s work has been described as Kafkaesque. It specifically mentions the idea of a man lying on the ground and the probable negative reaction of the passersby because of the terrible truth it would represent. And who else was supposedly good with parables?
@lorraineyang2271
@lorraineyang2271 2 года назад
I wouldn't be so sure that if this is true, Jamie would've changed the words. And surely, the "mess" of it being backwards, chopped up etc has more significance. However James is spot on that there are many references to God. I think though it is more likely that the reference is to Kafka than the Bible. Radiohead have a tendency to reference from modernism onwards (lozenge of love - larkin, the gloaming -- murakami, wind up bird chronicle, etc). Guess who was clued up on religion? Kafka's Jewishness is a huge part of his writing. It's a very good piece of work, what James did, I've just not convinced by thr phrase being changed to "make it less obvious". That seems cack handed on Jamie's part if true. Then, the 2nd verse doesn't quite match up, if the 2nd person you remains constant... Basically I think it's an excellent start but not convinced, more work needs to be done. I'll look into this Kafka reference and get back to you -- I have the novels and the Muir complete short stories -- evidently not so complete as The Savages is not there 🤣
@lorraineyang2271
@lorraineyang2271 Год назад
Okay, so it looks a bit more complicated that a representation of the truth. Again, I have no german, but got hold of a dual translation. People with german are free to comment. Here's the story... "Those savages of whom it is recounted that they have no other longing than to die, or rather, they no longer have even that longing, but death has a longing for them, and they abandon themselves to it, or rather, they do not abandon themselves, but fall into the sand on the shore and never get up again -- those savages I much resemble, and indeed I have fellow clansmen round about, but the confusion in these territories is so great, the tumult is like waves rising and falling by day and by night, and the brothers let themselves be borne upon it. That is what, in this country, is called 'giving someone a leg up'; everyone here is always ready with such help. Anyone who might collapse without cause and remain lying on the ground is dreaded as though he were the Devil, it is because of the example, it is because of the stench of truth that would emanate from him. Granted, nothing would happen; one, ten, a whole nation might very well remain lying on the ground and nothing would happen; life in all its might would go on just the same; the attics are still chockablock with flags that were never unfurled; this barrel organ can play only one tune, but it is eternity in person that turns the handle. And yet the fear! How people do always carry their own enemy, however powerless he is, within themselves." -- no translator here is listed but I'm working on it, shame on Schocken

I have always loved this Radiohead song the most and always wondered Just (sorry , couldn't resist) what the purest hell it was all about . All I could ever come up with was lyric-wise is that I thought it was about drug addiction . Mainly because of the "suckered you , but not your friends" , "how to get to purest hell" and the "you do it to yourself ........ just you , you and no one else" parts in the song . Video-wise , my best guess was he told them all that an alien invasion was about to destroy the Earth in a few seconds so lay down and relax while you can . I never invested a whole lotta time or effort in a solution and never connected the song and the video story . Hindsight now in play , it seems obvious that I should have , but .... yeah . Anyway , I tend to go with your theory now . I have studied the Bible and do believe , so now my eyes can see it . Thanks , Bro !!

As for the American cop in London I might have found something When the cop crouched down we see the numbers on his shoulders that reads 262 or if we go to Genesis 26-2 it says "The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live." So I don't know if that's the explanation of an American cop on duty in London.

I thought based on the song alone that it was just depression and self destructive tendencies and then if I think about it with music video I’m like clueless- like I want to continue to fit it to my theory, like maybe the easy compulsion to believe in something can even apply to believe in ideas that make you depressed or believe you deserve something bad to happen to fuel the self destruction, all just on the lyrics “you do it to yourself” like idk what if Jesus was depressed lol I mean like I would be if I were a demi god lawlz

Well, if that is right, then you could call religious apocalyptics and their followers overthinkers as well, and then the video just shows a special case of this phenomenon. I would rather say the song is meant as a vaccine against the tendency to let your mind be corrupted by charismatic (or just pushy) people who went too far out of their mind to come back. Kind of an aggressive variation of High & Dry.
