In 1997, Radiohead released OK Computer.
It took them from a notable British act to the most important rock band on the planet. It was profoundly human, compositionally creative and carried themes that are just as -- if not more potent today -- as they were 20 years ago. OK Computer marked the end of an era, setting a new path for rock music. Without it, Muse, Coldplay or Arcade Fire wouldn’t exist as they do now.
In Radiohead’s attempt to subvert mainstream trends and conventions, they ironically became more successful for it. Creating their most conceptually important release and one of the greatest albums of all time.

I love this album. I've been a follower of their music for over 20 years. The disconnection to society was ever present at the time of recording this album. I've watched several interviews where Thom Yorke speaks in the present, during the 90s, where he shares his genuine concerns about the state of our society. Today reality only perpetuates it.

Its hard to describe the impact of this album to teens of today. But back in 97, i remember being in a pub and discussing it with friends and we all agreed it was unlike anything we'd ever heard before. It was so futuristic sounding. Someone said it was like music from 2010 or something. Of course 2010 came and went and it turns out radiohead didnt quite predict the future musically ( the 00s for most part was just dross and often cheesy pop) but they did show us what music could be when we broaden our minds.

This album came out exactly when I needed it. A lot of people say it's depressing music and I would understand why. But the majority of people experience life in well defined spectrum. This album touches the tender emotions in between those segments of general emotion. Not quite happy or sad. Somewhere between angry or joyful. Enlightened yet meaningless. It's frightening and I loved it for that and I continue to adore this album after all this time.

The vocal is rubbish. And they should have added more layers of sounds and make better arrangement to make the song sound fuller. All Radiohead songs sound so thin to me. The only thing I get from them is harmonic complexity. Far from sonically brilliant.

Fawkk YuTuu Electioneering is mainly in the track listing to reverse the eeriness of Fitter Happier, which I guess can be interpreted as a lull in terms of the themes of OK Computer, but it still works to me. The Tourist is an amazing closer, and it compliments the beginning of the album, Airbag, perfectly (“HEY IDIOT SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!”). I’ll agree Lucky is weaker than tracks like PA and Exit Music, but that is the track that provided the layout for OK COMPUTER. I mean I think every track on OK COMPUTER works really well, but i can see why some people would disagree

When Scott did a similar thing when trying to talk to an old computer in ‘Star Trek IV The Voyage Home’ and that was over 30 years ago! they even had voice activated computers in the original series and that was around 50 years ago! so it was foreseen way before Radiohead. Now that’s the real eerie

Ok Computer is how you speak to the computer in the spaceship The Heart of Gold in the 70's book and TV show (now a film in 2005) The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy which Thom Yorke was a big fan of. Marvin the Paranoid Android was also a main character in that book hence the name of their song Paranoid Android. This character is seen at 5:53 in the bottom right hand corner

OK Computer is the album that made me realize that truly great original music will always be made. It brought me out of the poor attitude that we peaked with Zeppelin and early 80's punk/alternative. I still hear songs on Discover Weekly that blow me away, written and performed by people half my age. The garage band across the street sucks hard, but I encourage the practice. Make music, kids. It's one of the easy ways to (potentially) make the world a better place.

My brother bought this album on day 1 of its release in Australia. The next day he went off to work - and as a greasy uni student - I put the album on. I listened to the record 3 times in a row. When my bro got home I told him this album was so good it would change the music world. We grabbed beers and I started listen no 4. An absolute timeless classic!😊 Personally, I love In Raimbows just as much as OK - that album was also commercial suicide being released online for whatever you wanted to pay for it - and they made a fortune. @@n00bie96 There's some really fascinating old popular tech stuff that we're already forgetting, we already had electronic music hitting the charts in the 1960s, and in 1995 the Satellaview was broadcasting games direct into people's houses. Home computing had become widespread throughout the 1980s, quite a few big games (at least in the UK) had been developed by very young people at home, which led to the general belief was that while the old generation still couldn't program a VCR, the new generation would be so informed and educated about computers by growing up surrounded by them it would be amazing and full of wild opportunity. By 1997 it was very obvious that wasn't happening, schools were still not widely teaching anything like programming, and the "bedroom developers" were very much a thing of the past, we realised that technology had already advanced so quickly that people couldn't even imagine how their machines worked and in fact didn't even question it. (please note this is all EXTREMELY unsourced, biased and vague recollections, not historical fact, lol) It's a bit like how people often interpret 1984 as predicting the future, when it was based on international events that were happening at the time. They resonate with people because we understand them, they weren't time capsules that suddenly revealed their truth many years later. (Similarly I read some sci-fi from 1970 recently and it was unintentionally devastating because it clearly suggested we've been having the same human rights arguments forever, and will always have them, progress is so tiny and we're so quick to forget and fight the same battle every five years.)
@Picnicl
@Picnicl 4 года назад
The title 'OK Computer' was quite a stark seeming one at the time to me though, herrdoktorprofessor. It's like granting technology power over humans "OK, computer. I agree to that". Album titles didn't tend to be commands meets resigned acceptance. Although 'the fear' had been around since the 1950s and particularly in the 70s, fear of technology/modern life wasn't so sincerely, with import of doom, and starkly, directly, articulated until OK Computer (although The Bends made similar themes more implicit and I will always therefore understand people who prefer The Bends over OK Computer) .

The jump from pablo honey to the bends was massive and I fell in love with them and I vividly remember anticipating it coming out but doubting they could top the bends … then after like the first 30 seconds of airbag … I just thought oh fuck me wow and it’s stayed like that since . I remember not being surprised about thinking kid A was meh coz how do you go about topping that.

Agree. I thought I’d see more love for The Bends. In my humble opinion slightly better than OK Computer. But I have great moments in my life where both were the soundtrack to it.

OK Computer is an album that surpasses all other albums I have listened to, including any Beatle album. Some albums have one or two songs with magic in them and that's good enough but on OK Computer each song has magic in it. My favourite band remains the Beatles but my favourite album is OK Computer.
