They absolutely know, but they tend to use it more as an instrument that complements their voice. Take a listen at the band "Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas" and listen to the vocalist: It's VERY obviously autotuned, but you can sense that it's done very purposefully to bring character to the song, a bit like distortion does with guitars.
