Having read about the number of assymetric training accidents on both the Meteor and Canberra over many years, and the comparatively few actual engine failures on takeoff one has to wonder what was going at the top of the RAF to continue such a dangerous training regime for so long. I visited the Canberra OCU at Cottesmore when i was a16 year old cadet in 1970.

I was at this event and chatted to an ex Canberra B(I)8 pilot from the late 50s who went onto Vulcans in the early 60’s. He had some interesting tales to tell. Wish I spent longer hearing them. Look forward to watching the interview with Mike as I really enjoyed watching the fighter pilot series as a kid growing up not far from Linton-on-Ouse.

Wasn't this guy one of the instructors on the BBC series Fighter Pilot?

Episode 4, although apparently the BBC 'sexed up' the episode somewhat they captured Mike's likeable and relaxed attitude but didn't miss his directness and certain Yorkshire manner of delivering the truth haha! All part of being both a pilot and instructor.

I read somewhere it was called in some circles, the Metal Mosquito. Makes perfect sense.

I believe the original Canberras were conceived around props. Maybe that’s why the wing shape is what it is

That explains a lot, as a nipper in the 1970s living in Milford Haven, Wales, I used to sometimes see flashes at night in the direction of Castlemartin. At the time I thought I was seeing things!
