Operation Carthage, aka the Shell House Raid. RAF Mosquitoes carried out a low level raid to bomb the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen. Low-level precision raids are very common to ensure accuracy (most famous being the Amiens prison raid). They succeeded in destroying Gestapo files on the Danish resistance and freeing resistance fighters being held in thhe buildings basement. Unfortunately, during the initial wave of attacks, a plane flew into the school depicted here. The fire and smoke caused other pilots to mistook it for the target, thereby causing them to mistakenly bomb the school.
@Egg_-..- doesn't mean you shouldn't take the time out to research if what he said was true or not, if you wanna get in a debate best to know about some things especially when it comes to history.
This happened in 21st march 1945. The Danish resistance provided some info the the British about the shell house (gestapo hq) with some waves of mosquito bombers. A mosquito bomber collided with some antenna and crashes near a French school in Copenhagen. Which is but the shell house (the intended target) which causes a huge smoke signal . There are some bombers that hit the intended target but the majority misses and bombs the school. Because the smoke signal. It was also really foggy so they could t see that much that’s why 1 bomber collided with the antenna. The movie is called Bombardment and you should really watch it it’s a good movie.

My grandfather's folks apartment in the city center of Nevers, France was completely destroyed during the war . The RAF was targetting the nearby train station but a navigation error led them to bomb the city center instead. The whole historical city center was turned to ruins. Btw it’s a great movie and this movie is based on shellhuset in kopenhagen
heres some like context of what happened: so the RAF (basically just the british air force) in ww2 was allied with denmark. Denmark had asked britian to bomb/raid this place where the germans were doing something bad idk what, and the british had refused a lot because it was very close to a school, but finally they agreed. That's not why they bombed the school tho- a plane had crashed near-almost next to-the school and they mistaked it as the target and they noticed but it was too late (as you can see in the video of them saying "abort, abort") and sadly that school was bombed
They were targeting the Gestapo HQ. The raid was actually successful. The Gestapo HQ building was destroyed, along with several documents about their jntelligence in the activities of the Danish resistance. A bunch of Danish resistance held in the building also managed to escape because of the bombardment. Overall, not the worst bombing raid of the war.
So this is what we know happened: It's about a precision bombing raid of a gestapo HQ in Copenhagen, a building called the Shell house. It was a bombing raid Danish resistance had called for, for a while. A year prior the RAF had sucessfully bombed the Gestapo HQ in Aarhus university campus, the second largest city in Denmark, with very little collateral damage, only a few Danes died as a result. (I live just around the block from the Campus) The Copenhagen raid was a bit different. A total of 18 bombers armed with 36 bombs took part in the raid. One of the planes in the first wave is shot down by German anti aircraft and crashes into a garage building next to a French speaking school in the resident district of Frederiksberg. The second wave coming in from the west saw the smoke and flames from the downed plane first, as a result they believe that the French school is the target and drop their bombs, one or two withholding their bombs. The RAF manage to target the right building for the third wave and successfully bomb the Shell house. Total casualties were 250 and leaving 900 people without a home. 86 of the casualties were childeren and 18 teachers were killed as well. It was the single biggest loss of life during the occupation of Denmark. What is tragic is that, it was less than 50 days before the Nazi occupation ended, and less that half of the casualties were German soldiers or Danish gestapo collaborators.
My grandfather was just a boy (7 I believe) when he fled from eastern prussia. He lost his mum, and was injured by shrapnel. His little sister was separated from the rest of the family. She was found sitting on a pile of bodies, and brought to southern germany. My grandfather made his way to Copenhagen, where he was brought to a hospital. He was reunited with his aunt and brought to the Oksbøl refugee camp. Later on he and his Aunt were braught to the Schäferhaus refugee camp in northern germany. The red cross eventually found his sister and reunited them. Its always easy for foreigners to blame amd condemn all germans for WWII, when in reality, the war was just pure horror for all involved. In war, no one wins...
This actually happened an unfortunate amount of times throughout the war especially in France in preparation and in continuance of D-day. From high in the sky its hard to pick out targets to crews who have never been to these cities especially in an area with a lot of features like a town. Before anyone calls Warcrimes, id argue against since this was unintentional. Fortunately all sacrifices were not in vain in the destruction of the third Reich

What I’m about to say does not defend the actions of the day The raid was on a gestapo hq which was requested by the danish resistance, however the school had a similar look to the gestapo hq leading the bom era to misidentify the targets. None of the pilots or crew were informed of the mistake until the end of the war Edit: ok so I failed to mention a mosquito crashed into a lamp post near the school and the second wave thought that it was the target
