A selection of buildings pictured in 1995 when the army were at the camp. All are scanned from prints.
It is believed that most if not all are gone now. What a shame that this once proud station has all but gone.
If you need more info or want to reproduce any of the pictures, then please contact me, Graham Innes at gijock@btinternet.com

I was stationed there in 1972/3 for a year. It was the home of The Vickers Varsity of No. 5 Flying Training School Royal Air Force. It was a Navigator training aircraft. I worked in the POL part of the Supply Sqdn. While stationed there I live with my wife over at RAF Duxford. It was a fabulous year. I left before it closed & was posted to RAF Laarbruch.

Happy days I am sure. It was a lovely looking station.

@@GrahamInnes1 During that summer, a really long hot summer too we drove around the area looking for all the old RAF stations we could find. My wife's father served in Bomber Command as an Air Eng. My dad served in the RAF too but with the precursor to the Reciment call the Ground Gunners. Because he wore glasses they wouldn't let him fly as an Air Gunner although he out shot his intake.

Served here 69-72. Great station. All that is left now is the officers mess, SHQ and the guard room. If you look on google earth you will be able to see what’s left.

2:30 the red car, to the slight left of it is a green lampost. Anyone remember these? They were dotted around the centre of the camp only they weren't lamposts. Every so often one would 'purge', the top would flip to the side and release a gas of some sort, rather like the old flush system, you'd pull the chain (you'd hear a similar sound) then a sudden release of pressure. I wonder what was under the ground for the need for these posts?

currently, all the plan ideas for the new northstowe town wish to demolish the remaining station headquarters and water towers. about half want to demolish the guard house and one wants to demolish the L barrack blocks on either side of the officers mess while keeping the rest. luckily I'm trying to make and propose an official plan for the base to save the remaining buildings.

I like the art deco watch office, just needs to lose the "greenhouse" on top.

Yes, the "visual control room" was added in the 50s.

Based there 1991 to 1993 while in 1RHF. Hated it. Terrible place for a Scottish Battalion.

@@GrahamInnes1 I know Graham. I think we were placed there as a punishment or no where else to put us. Cambridge took a pounding from us during the weekend. 🫣

1RHF also, posted there in Jan 89. Spent most of our pay on taxis to Cambridge. Think the old taxis driver was called Terry.
