It always amazes that these wartime bases were built to peacetime standards. I mean, why bother with kerbstones when you could have just gullied the road edges to provide drainage. Few people realise how dispersed wartime airfield infrastructure was. Unlike the bases built in the 1930's, which had all the domestic buildings grouped in a relatively small area (usually behind the hangers and technical buildings), wartime airfields were dispersed over miles of countryside. My late father's diary notes how happy he was when he and his crewmates were posted to start their 'career' on 640 Squadron based at Leconfield, with its centrally heated barracks and short walk to the sergeants mess. By contrast, their move to Pathfinders and 35 Squadron at wartime Graveley meant draughty huts, pot bellied stoves and pinching sections of the farmer's wooden fence to supplement the meagre coal ration!
I cannot see the link which you refer to about the pipeline. As far as I’m concerned the markers you mentioned are for the Acetone pipe line which runs from Teeside to Salt End near Hull. It was laid about 20years ago for British Petroleum by J Murphy & Sons. The pipeline is now owned and controlled by Jim Ratcliffe’s company Ineos PLC.
