Sneak peek from Rafa Sardina's Inside the Track series, in which he describes his mixing setup.
We're excited to present our first ever series featuring the eclectic grammy-winning engineer and producer Rafa Sardina! Hosted at his private Los Angeles studio, this installment focuses on the vibrant mix of ‘Aquí Estoy Yo’ by Diego Torres. Sardina takes you through his expansive yet highly efficient hybrid setup that comprises a SSL Duality console, Oracle summing mixer, Maselec master transfer console, outboard racks, and Pro Tools. He recalls the 2015 session, comments on the rough mix, and compares it to his own. He proceeds to reveal how he drastically enhanced the work sonically and emotionally, from both technical and artistic perspectives. Aside from sharing his mix methods refined over decades, Sardina ventures into discussion about career development, investing in analog gear, finding inspiration, working impulsively, and deciphering an artist's true vision for their record.

most of the people in these videos say one thing in common: find something good at the beginning of the process and commit to it throughout the mix. that's very solid advice.

Still amazing that so many great records have been made with maybe not even 1/3 of all this gear ...

People see the wall of gear in studios and all they see are dollar signs. They think that each track goes through all of this stuff or that when we use a tool that it's bringing a dramatic change to the sound and that's the "hack" to making great records. "ah that's a Pultec no wonder it sounds great" or "so and so makes equally great records on his laptop with plugins". In reality, these are all colorful tools that you may only use for a .5 db lift at 1.5k with a medium tight Q to go from "Meh it's okay" to "Holy fuck that's it!". Yes they cost a lot... but the results we're chasing are a lot too right?

Sadly those SSL consoles are starting phase out due to the decline of large format consoles in favor of Hybrid Mixing setups. More and more studios are going Hybrid typically with an Argosy desk full of outboard mixing in the box. Large format consoles are a thing of the past.

@@RTCLR123 Large format consoles are acutally dying out. They have been on the decline for last 15 years now. The changes in SSL, AMS/Neve and RND reflect those changes as consoles are getting smaller and smaller more gear towards Hybrid and analog summing.
@HOLLASOUNDS

It's all to do with cost and the fact that software is more then capable of doing most of or even all the same things as physical gear. The gear in this video probably cost over £200.000 when you can get almost identical professional sound for under £2000 in a half decent laptop and software. That's why the old way is dieing out.
@eman0828
@eman0828 2 года назад
@@HOLLASOUNDS I don't think hardware is dying, more like downsizing to a more minimalist workflows. Hardware is well alive and here to stay in terms analog outboard that's actually booming especially the 500 Series. It's the large format consoles are no longer need in this day end age. The vast majority of Mixing Engineers have a Hybrid mixing setup. Mastering Engineers as well as It's hard to not see a Mastering Engineer without analog outboard pieces. Yes it's possible to produce, record, mix and master a record entirely with software but most Professional Engineers still prefer to integrate analog hardware into their work flow. There are some things you can do with hardware that you can't get with software and th same verse vica with the software you can't do with hardware.

That mixer He is using cost over £100.000, insane amount of money for what's really redundant because a £2000 laptop and software can do the exact same.

Real helpful thing will be, if Mix With Masters can provide his converted template workflow in ITB with plugin chain sounding close to the hardwares sound. Otherwise how on this earth, will anyone find it useful ? 99% don't even own those hardwares, mixer, console. 🥴

Or yes u always have to micro adjust for the elements to compliment each other. I never put bass in the drum bus. Never due to the bass have lots of dynamics I intent to mix bass with the insutremts to me it's best that way.. it glues better that way when u apply tape emulatoins.👌

I wonder how much money an engineer like Rafa (great career, equipment, awards) would charge for a full 12 songs album, specially in this new era of music business that a very very few artists have sufficient finance for their projects, very little return in royalties and specially low sales.
