Rafiki's FULL Story: Discovering Disney's The Lion King

Rafiki is a shaolin monk, a spiritual healer, and an energy medium. He may not be immortal, but his practices may lead to his impossibly long life. Also through the animal kingdom being two different species, he also has hybrid vigor, which also extends his life beyond each species life span, but has also inherited being sterile, so his own new species ceases to exist after his existence. So being justified in a manner that he is a demi-God, his existence becomes in a way the immortal that he is portrayed as.

My own (absolutely non-canon, take it as you like) theory is that Rafiki was originally a human chieftan who ruthlessly plundered the prideland's game herds. He was cursed by a shaman to live as a baboon, until he learned the value of the circle of life. Rafiki now knows it better than anyone does, but considering its complexity, he still has a lot to learn before he can revert to his human form. That's why, other than Mufasa's death, he's so sad to witness Scar's ascension, because he sees his own past actions in it.

Rafikki was inspired by African Shamans. In ancient times, Shamans used to do everything for their tribes from healing to giving out prophecies. Sometimes they would mumble riddles that to regular people sounded like crazy gibberish. But to one of strong spirituality, the words actually represent something important.

I think this is something you could talk about. So, Kiara is Simba's daughter. Covu is Scar's son. (Zara was Scar's mate and Covu is Zara's son and Zara only loved Scar) Covu and Kiara fall in love and get married. Doesn't that make the related? Scar is Simba's uncle. That would make Covu Simba's cousin. It kinda makes sense. Plus, Covu kinda looks like Scar.

Rafiki has always been my favorite. I never thought he was crazy, lol. But I didn't realize his wisdom until later. A spiritual leader! Beautiful scene, my favorite. " Bam" , hits Simba on the head. "It doesn't matter It's in the past" "Still hurts" " Yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it". We should all be so wise. If you think that this story needs more information, just listen to this story about Rafiki, That I personally think may explain a lot about him. The first legitimate memory Rafiki had was of his mother, Shiriki, taking him up all the way to the top of the forest canopy and presenting him to the Sun for the first time (as was tradition for many mandrills in his horde). Throughout his childhood, Rafiki Did not know who his father was. However, as was traditional for mandrills, The responsibility of caring for him was shared among all female members of the horde (it was Almost as if Rafiki had 281 mothers instead of just one), although Shiriki always loved him the most. When Rafiki reached a certain age, Eventually it came time for him to seek out a mate of his own, and possibly start his own family. After Successfully earning the affections of a female named Shadi, For whom he had developed a mutual fondness for After growing up with her for most of his life, he found himself violently reprimanded by Kwashi, the leader of the horde, Who had advances on Shadi himself. After a particularly aggressive altercation between the Both of them (which Kwashi won, despite Rafikis Best efforts) Kwashi Angrily yelled out to Rafiki, in no uncertain terms, that he did not belong in the mandrill horde and (Citing the fact that Rafiki had a tail while the other mandrills did not) Rafiki was not, nor would he ever be, one of them! Devastated, the forlorn primate sort out his mother and asked her what Kwashi Could possibly have meant by saying such things. He had lived in the horde all of his life, hadn't he? How could he not belong with them? Sadly, But with no other choice, Shiriki Told him of his strange lineage. Apparently, some time before Rafikis birth, Shiriki met and fell in love with a white, hamadryas baboon Named Jirati, Who hailed from the land of the great river. Jirati related to Shiriki that, while living as a member of his own baboon troop, he was told by the great kings of the past (which according to hamadryas baboons, along with many other animals living near the great river) that if he was to go beyond the borders of his home and find “a girl of a different colour”, that together, they would have a child who, because of his unorthodox lineage (his father from the north, his mother from the south, et cetera) would develop a strong and unique connection to the great circle of life. Unfortunately, their happiness together was cut short by an attack from a rogue male baboon, who killed Jirati and tried to take Shiriki for himself. Fearing for her safety, and having no other reason to stay, Shiriki went back home to the mandrills and gave birth to Rafiki there. Determined to find out more about where he came from, he set out to find the great river and possibly his father. Eventually he found the Hamadryas baboons when he met an injured female Named Gawina, And nursed her back to health. She led him back to her troop where he was made reasonably welcome, with the troop leader Hapi thanking him for returning Gawina , who was his queen, back to his side, even going so far as to encourage Rafiki to feel like family. Rafiki soon found his surroundings to be troubling, however, when he discovered that Hapi had injured Gawina himself and when he confronted Gawina about it, she told him that Hapi was the firstborn son of Sutekh, the male baboon that had attacked and killed Jirati years ago, who eventually became king and had a son of his own. Rafiki decided to take his leave of such an evil place, even going so far as to invite Gawina to come with him, to a place where Hapi could never hurt her again. Gawina simply responded by pointing out the scars on her body (of which she had many), telling Rafiki that each and every one of them was “in the past, and as painful as the past is, you can either run from it, or learn from it. I have chosen to learn from the past, and someday I will be able to take what I have learned from my past, and with it, I will teach the future. So what are you going to do?” Rafiki remained unsure and decided be off on his own for a while, plotting his revenge. Rafiki walked all day, and that night he sat down by the banks of the great river. But when he attempted to drink some of the waters he happened to see his own reflection. He thought nothing of it and continued drink until he heard something in the air. It sounded like the wind itself was giving him a message. “Look harder.” Rafiki did so, and when he did he was surprised to see a baboon looking up at him. It was Jirati! As he looked into the water, the spirit of Jirati spoke to him through the reflection (not being a great King of the past, he did not get to look down on the world from the stars. Instead he lived on in the natural order of the circle of life itself). Jirati told Rafiki that he was destined for something greater than revenge, and that it was not his place to become leader of the kingdom of baboons. Rather, in the absence of a good kingdom to go home to, he should make a new home and a better kingdom. Jirati also told his son that he was Sorry that he could not be with him as he was growing up, but that it was enough to know that he loved him even before he was born, and that Jirati lived in him, and always would. They were, and always be, connected in the great circle of life. If Rafiki needed any more proof of his father’s love, Jirati told, he should follow the fork in the river to the end, and that there he would find a gift that Jirati had left for him to have when he was old enough. Rafiki followed the bend in the river for 3 days and nights, all the way to its age and there he found a pit of mud and clay. He looked harder, and there he found, in the centre of the giant puddle of clay… an old, long wooden stick with several African fruits tied to it. Rafiki waded out into the mud and removed the stick from the swampy water, and immediately it became clean and drinkable again. Realising that he now had purpose, Rafiki went out into Africa in search of Wisdom and a new kingdom to call home. Eventually, he met the king of Pride Rock, Ahadi, and his two sons, Mufasa and Taka. Intrigued By what he was and what he was doing in the pride lands, Ahadi invited Rafiki to come to Pride Rock and Share with him what he had learned. Considering that the value of the circle of life was a well-known truth even in this part of the world, Rafiki Decided to tell AhadiAll About how the great kings of the past looked down upon them from the stars. Ahadi Asked Rafiki If he himself could go to the stars when he died. Rafiki Assured him that, if he was indeed a great King, and continued to do great things for his kingdom, upholding the circle of life, then he would definitely get to go up into the stars. Ever since then, Rafiki has remained a valued voice Speaking up for the preservation of the circle of life and balance of nature, as well as a member of the royal court of the lion kings of the pride lands.

He was my all time favorite disney character for a while when I was a kid, many of my friends prefered timon and pumba or the Genie from Alladin; Mine has always been the wise,eccentric, shaman mandrill :D!
