I have just made a baby rag quilt with your tutorial , it was fun and I’m thinking about my next one . The only thing I’m lacking is washing and putting in the dryer, thank you so much for a great tutorial !

I really think 1/2 inch seams are adequate also and give a nice rag look. That way, you are not taking so much material from the quilt. Those inches add up in the long run. Of course, it's a matter of preference and I also definitely wash my flannel first. This was a very good tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing.

OMG, I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out how much fabric I need to buy. All the mathematical problems (like the math word problems I so hated in school) have my head spinning. I was never good at math, but now I cannot hold onto a thought long enough to process it because Lupus and lack of sleep make it impossible to focus (Lupus brain fog). I had not idea how much math is involved in quilting, but I'm determined to learn how to do it. Thank you ever so much for spelling things out so clearly. A wave of relief washed over me after watching this. I'm subbing right now. THANKS! I just realized I'm commenting under my other account name which has the gamer name my grandson gave me. lol

LOL!!! I am a teacher as well, and laughed out loud at your comment on your account name! I can totally see my grandson doing this one day to me! I have Sjogren's which is under the Lupus umbrella, so I am very familiar with brain fog! I am the same exact way! I am so glad that I could help you with the math. I do make sure someone else goes over my math before I posted it. I am going to start posting a lot more under this channel! Let me know what else you would like to see! Thank you so much for commenting and watching my video! Happy quilting! Mary Ann

Hi, I wanted to say thank you for this amazing and so easy to follow tutorial for first time quilters like myself. I made one for our Granddaughter Isla Kate two years ago and it is still being used and is loved. I had to order the flannel from Etsy and it came on a long journey through the USA to Scotland UK. I am now going to make another one for our Grandson, who, God willing, will be born in July 2020. Thank you again for your excellent instructions. Best wishes to you all and for all you and your families to safely come through this very difficult and trying time. We will survive. God bless.

Thank you very much for your complements! You can use other material, but for babies, I just love the softness of the flannel. My twin lives in Woking, England. I am honored you found my video from Scotland! I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy, too! We are all in this together! May God bless you, too!

Hi May Ann. The struggles I had dealing with batting on a king size quilt as a beginner has kept me away from quilting for almost 30 years! Imagine my thrill of seeing you do the 3 layers in pieces and all at once! 🙏🏻♥️ So, on to my question. Have you ever made a summer “quilt “ with no batting? Just the two layers? Thanks! Because I am using 2 patterns of darker colors (navy), and 2 of a lighter color (gray and white), I am concerned about the darker colors fading on the lighter colors when I wash it at completion to make it fray at the seams. Do you think it will still fray at the seams if I prewash the fabric to set the colors before I cut and assemble it ?
@maryanntwinstruction9554
@maryanntwinstruction9554 3 года назад
Hello Ellen, I have used many different color (light and dark) combinations and have never had that problem. I have always used either flannel or just cotton fabric. I even had some reds in one quilt that did not bleed at all. I hope yours worked out! Mary Ann

I wonder if you can answer a question. I often use "Quilters Flannel" for the back of my quilts because it comes larger withes and it's a much tighter weave, brushed on both sides than Flannelette. Since the quilters flannel is so tight will it fray as much as the inexpensive flannelette?

what is that on the ruler that you use to cut by it is a handle of somekind
@maryanntwinstruction9554
@maryanntwinstruction9554 3 года назад
Hello Linda, Yes, this is a tool sold by the notions department at JoAnn's that suctions on to the ruler. It is easier to grab than trying to move the ruler by itself. To tell you honestly, it's the same thing that they sell at Walmart that you can suction on the wall for a shower safety bar. It is probably cheaper at Walmart, in my opinion. It does help if you have problems gripping things or have arthritis. Thanks for viewing my video! I am planning on having more posts soon! Mary Ann

@maryanntwinstruction9554
@maryanntwinstruction9554 4 года назад
Thank you so much! Because this is a rag quilt, we want the material to "fray" on the seams after you make your cuts. Yes, it will have some shrinkage but not a lot. For all other quilts, yes, you do wash the material ahead of time. Hope this helps!

@maryanntwinstruction9554
@maryanntwinstruction9554 10 лет назад
You can reinforce the stitches by back stitching, but you don't need to if you sew from edge to edge. When you go to sew the rows together, make sure you again are sewing edge to edge in order to sew over the stitches. Sometimes I do reinforce them, and other times I don't.

@maryanntwinstruction9554

You can adjust the size of the square's to your liking. I think 10" squares would work for the baby quilt. You can still do five squares by six squares. You will just need a little more fabric.

Yes you can put any pattern in the center of the blocks, however ether end your block quilting an inch away from the sides or end the directly in the corner points. You can use a folded piece of paper making a 1" ruler for yourself, butt it against the edge of the fabric to start or end your quilting. Does that make sense?
