This song was written about the Rodney King beating. This album is from 1992.
@fatguyjd12

Just wanna add to what the other viewer (S Ventura) said...... This song is off their 1st album & was a direct response to the Rodney king beating & the riots that followed in LA... the people that are killed by police are justified killings because the killer is wearing a badge. They are the “chosen whites” to carry out the cleansing. It’s a deep song w/ minimal lyrics. You can tell that Zack (lead singer) was still pretty raw. That whole 1st album was a preview of how the band would always try to put out a message w/ their message. A message of always questioning & highlighting the injustices in our world. & to speak out on those injustices. The rest of their albums continued to evolve into more powerful lyrics & amazing instrumentals!!! Keep RAGING!!!

Reason you are bopping to this is if you listen closely, RATM are using funk progressions. Funk is the godfather of hip hop. RATM are funk metal and yes, that is a genre that was around in the early 90s. Red Hot Chillie Peppers, Primus, Korn's first album and many other bands had funk compositions because it was popping. RATM just kept that sound throughout their career. Funk was the sound of counterculture in the US during the 1970s. It blared during activist rallies and gave the black culture an anthem against the government. There is also a reason Zach repeats the message several times throughout the song and uses an effect that makes him sound like he's on a loudspeaker. RATM are activists and are recreating the essence of activism with funk being the primary focus.

Brad Wilk is the drummer. He and Tim Cummerford (Bassist) never get any love but there wouldn’t be a Rage sound without them. Without the funky bass line and hip hop/metal drum beat then Tom wouldn’t have the freedom to experiment so much. Tim also adds his unique sounds on the bass as well. Another 5 songs for you to checkout from Rage. Roll Right Mic Check Maria Fistful of Steel Freedom

In concert Zack used to change the second verse to "some of those that burn crosses are the same that hold office" sadly, these lyrics were also too political to air on the radio so they never made it to the album, but if you ever watched/listen to them perform live you might hear the 'unscripted' version. Also a little known fact is the Mary Morello, the lead guitarists mom, was a civil rights activist, an NAACP member and a Kenyan delegate in the UN. The lead singer, Zack de la Rochas Grandfather was also a Mexican revolutionary. So there's some additional history behind the lyrics that provide context to the passion in thier performances.

Shadow banned. Good ole' George W. Bush didn't want people hearing songs that could cause outrage over injustice and possible riots. A lot of songs made that list but RATM is the only to have all songs on the list.

Yeah, if you decide to watch ANY rage live, MOST of the live performances have AWFUL audio mixing. IMO Live at Finsbury Park is the ONLY live performance video that does them justice. The entire concert is floating around, and its all fire, but most people do gravitate toward their opening number, which was Testify.

New intro approved! I agree that you're ready for a live performance video. Testify live at Finsbury Park is good because it's all RATM. All those people are there just to see them, it's not like some of the other large concerts that were a mix of bands. The people at Finsbury were all Rage fans.

What I love most about watching you react to these RAGE videos is that you're only there on like 15% of the level you will eventually be. You aren't even hearing most of the lyrics right now and the lyrics are the most powerful part of their music. You're just rockin' out, which is cool, but eventually you'll find that next level and you're mind will be blown. Just a matter of time before they hit #1. If Lincoln Park was Grant Hill, Rage is LeBron James. Both are great in some ways and can do it all, but Rage is just a whole other level.

He ain't ready. He's impressed by "bells & whistles", not the genuine article. I THINK he even disparaged Led Zepplin at some point!!! Baby steps for young blood. He's only just realizing there was music being made, in all genres, prior to his 10th birthday. 😒

@@theurbanexperience2020 honestly you can't really compare the 2 because they're 2 completely different sub genres that took place during 2 separate eras. Led Zeppelin is primarily Hard Rock and they focused on being theatrical. Rage on the other hand fused together Punk, Funk, Hip Hop, and Metal and focused on the message behind the music to start a movement. A resistance against the government. They're both great bands in their own unique way

So Rage only released 3 albums of original music, 33 tracks. 12 of those charted as singles in various markets around the world (plus No Shelter from the Godzilla movie soundtrack, which is a hard song, and a giant fuck you to commercial tie ins on a commercial tie in album, which in of itself is amazing). You've already heard 7 of them. All of them are fire. Most of the tracks that never charted are fantastic, too. They also released an album of covers (Renegades) which also had 3 hits chart. It's mostly Rage covers of late 70s early 80s and some early 90s funk and hip hop songs. This band doesn't make bad songs. Regarding the Led Zeppelin comparison, to me those are really apples and oranges (particularly trying to compare Robert Plant's insane singing to Zach's rap/spoken word vocals), BUT! Jimmy Paige vs Tom Morello is fair, they are both super creative virtuoso guitarists that find ways to make new noises with their instrument. Paige famously played his guitar with a violin bow, for instance, while Morello seems to find new creative uses for wah-wah pedals and his guitar switches so that he makes his guitar sound like a wholly different instrument, be it a synth keyboard or record scratching. However, when it comes to drums, RATM's Brad Wilk may be a beast, but no one touches Zeppelin's Jon Bonham. He changed the game and was doing wild music theory stuff with time signatures and still making it bang instead of turning it into a prog-rock music nerd experiment.
@robertflores8234
@robertflores8234 3 года назад
The drummer’s good too. (Most underrated drummer of all time). The drummer Brad Wilk and bassist Timmy C keep such a great pocket and groove for Tom Morello to venture out through the force and Zach to spit out his political poetic flow, piercing through any defense in their way.

Out of their 36 original songs?, there are literally only 2 skips for me (and everyone's taste is different and valid), Maria and Ghost of Tom Joad. Some of the covers on Renegades weren't songs I cared for, but the other 34 are so, so great, even the non-singles filling out albums. None of it is filler.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that someone actually seriously favors Linkin Park over RATM and Led Zeppelin!! But hey that's the beauty of musical tastes right. @theurbanexperience2020
@theurbanexperience2020 3 года назад
I like how you did that at the end. Linkin Park was very commercialised when they were Poppin. And yes Led Zeppelin and rage might be more instrumentally talented. Facts but when it comes to the sound of the song in your ears through your headphones Linkin Park is a lot more complex than both of those artists and that's facts. You take the instruments away from lead and rage you won't hear the same stuff that's facts!! But that doesn't take away from Rage or Led Zeppelin they're both great in their own right!

I would agree with your top two rankings as well If you want some real underground that is only popular amongst the rock/alternative stuff: Taking Back Sunday (punk rock with a great drummer, singing is more emo sounding) Something Corporate (punk rock with a piano, singer is popular, but I feel this is his best band of 3 or 4 he’s had) Fly Leaf (first woman singing punk band that was somewhat popular) Some more popular bands: Stone Temple Pilots (these dudes are great, lead singer died of an overdose) Sumblime (more ska punk, lead singer died of an overdose, they are fire) Paramore (woman singer, pop sounding, one of my guilty pleasures) Red Hot Chili Peppers (probably in my top 5, these guys are awesome, bassist named flea is the best) Rise Against (a newer sounding punk band, they’re okay, a couple really good sounds) Rap rock is hard to find. There really isn’t many. Happy new year
