What the modern day reboot fails to capture is that back then, the crime / murder rate was several times worse. I don't mean "several times" figuratively, I mean it statistically. Chicagoans offing 300 people in a year was considered a slow summer 40 years ago. This was before the concealed carry movement. Kearsey picking up a gun and carrying it was basically outrageous and unheard of. This was before stop and frisk. The police in the big cities were less effective than the French Underground Resistance in WW2. No one was doing anything about it. My father, who saw the first screening of Death Wish in theaters said that when the credits rolled, people stood up, clapped and cheered. In liberal New York of the 1970's, people were ecstatic at the mere thought of someone fighting back against crime.
Agreed. It was a much different time back then, and ironically the original Death Wish was really more about being AGAINST vigilantism. The scene where Kersey throws up after he killed someone for the first time was pretty realistic.
back in the days of John Lindsay as Mayor? I recall a fellow on CSPAN 2 bookTV talking about one of Lindsay's staffers saying Blacks, Hispanics and other minorities SHOULD be on welfare to 'make up' for the racism they experienced.
*The original Death Wish was filmed in New York City during the worst crime wave in our history. 80%++ of the film was made with 1/2 mile of my house ;-) The movie was so popular in NYC that people were standing up and screaming epithets at the dead guys after each and every shooting. It was WILD!. Lord do I miss Bronson tho...*
As other reviewers have pointed ut that in New York crime was a big deal as it covered the whole city. Where here in chicago its really kept to the hoods so most people do not give a damn
And in defense of Bruce Willis, whom I absolutely love, it took a lot of guts for a mainstream actor to make a movie like this in 2018. When Mel Gibson was casting the lead for "The Passion of the Christ", it is rumored that Gibson warned the actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus Christ in the movie, that if he took the role he might never work in Hollywood again. Gibson was correct because this actor has gotten very few roles since appearing in that movie. Hollywood hates people who have ideas it disagrees with, and Bruce Willis may have hurt his future film career with the making of this movie. With that you must give him much credit. I respect Bruce Willis for having the guts to make a move like this in today's political environment. Thanks for the film review RazorFist!
Yeah. I think Bruce is above doing remakes but then he is the only actor I know that would make a film like this in this political climate. Willis dont give a fcuk about that nonsense, he is all about the movies, not the ideologue politics.
"...at a point in his career where he CAN..." You might think so, but the fact is that Mel Gibson was the hottest property in Hollywood when he decided to do _Passion of the Christ._ Everyone (mostly) instantly turned on him and even tried to sabotage him. It took him years to get the film made and effectively ruined his career. M. Night Shyamalan was being touted as a "genius" until he made a movie (with Gibson) whose _plot_ was about alien invasion but whose _story_ was about spiritual redemption, called _Signs._ -- After that, everyone instantly denigrated him as a worthless hack...
They used to run on independent TV stations in my wasted youth, when Ronaldus Magnus presided over our great Republic. But that was a long time ago, before the dark times, before the SJW Empire...
Nine years ago in the People's Republic of Maryland right outside Baltimore I saw two unicorns on TV back when I still watched it: -A TV ad for I.O. Inc., back when they were making AK's, advertised as the best AK's ever made (liars their guns are trash, never buy one) -Another ad for a local gun range. I was awestruck they even allowed those commercials on the air!!!
Hook up the rabbit ears,,if your in a gun state you will see gun show ads often on the antenna. Atleast in Texas,,from pawn shop gun shows to the yearly state gun show lol
9:34 It wasn´t the driver shooting him, it was his grip slipping up and getting caught in the recoiling slide, thats actually quite common with glocks and their high bore-axis, I thought it was a nice touch.
Seriously though, where the hell did Bruce Willis purchase fully automatic rifle anywhere within 200 miles of Chicago? Also: god bless Terran Gell for that funeral scene. You're becoming a master of your art.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is how they set up the hidden AR in the table. It’s presented as a joke early in the movie as he’s browsing RU-vid to learn more about guns but everyone cheered in the theater when it came back at the end. Awesome setup and surprise.
I recognize it as the typical unwillingness of Hollywood to cast actors from the right background for roles, people who should be asian are very often just whites. If you want to see this as political, it just might be.
@@durrmiah Made even more confusing because what made most PC people bitch about Dr. Strange with making the Ancient One white - which was a decision made to avoid being accused of stereotyping the wise Asian master. There is no winning when you try to appease the PC Monster.
Actually it was because in the comics the Ancient One is Tibetan. Guess which country makes movies rich on the international stage and currently occupies Tibet?
@@andresarellano449 slide bite from too high a grip. I was watching a new guy shoot, and he put his thumb over the back of the slide. I warned him before he broke his thumb.
Very useful. I generally avoid recent remakes, since they seem to be more concerned with _politically-correcting_ than making a decent movie. The original Manchurian Candidate was about a communist plot, so the remake had to have a right-wing plot. Magnificent Seven was about Cowboys helping Latino villagers against Mexican bandits - So naturally the remake has a diversity-squad fighting an evil rich white guy. Good to know I could watch this without getting _too_ pissed off (Is it too late to try to clone Bronson?).
As someone that lives near Chicago and frequents the city often, I give your assessment of this malodorous metropolis the stamp of approval. 'Chicago style pizza' isn't pizza.
@@SAOrules Both are shitholes now thanks to 2020 and letting libtard politicians run them into the ground. NYC is pretty much on track to be right back to the days of the original Death Wish back in 1974 thanks to de Blasio and Cuomo.
Gunshots in movies now actually sound more like how they do in real life versus back in the day where every gun sounded like a hand cannon no matter the caliber. Even Beretta 9mm's had that hand cannon sound, and just about every revolver had the .44 Magnum Dirty Harry sound effect attached to them. Even Dr. Loomis's revolver in the original Halloween when he shoots Michael Myers had that sound.
I'm still trying to figure out how he managed to get: Short barrel rifle (6-12month waiting for tax stamp) Suppressor (6-12month waiting for tax stamp, and just plain illegal in IL) Full auto (considering that's a post '86 rifle, it's illegal) and How the bad guys managed to get their hands on full auto Scorpions (again, post '86 and illegal)
Hollywood thinks a dude can find a Mafia gun seller with a single Streetwise skill roll, like game night with an impatient Game Master. Also Skorpions are the default machine pistol for discerning goblins since 1982.
@@observationsfromthebunker9639 They used the Scorpion Evo. It's new and no, they don't come with the fun switch. It's still a fun little sub gun, however.
@Bearistopheles Yeahp. The movie poorly communicates enough time passed for the 3 day wait period to get a gun considering he supposedly got them on the day his daughter got out of the hospital. It also didn't show him going to the mandatory safety class. The editing is confusing too. Kersey's daughter gets out of the hospital, he goes to the gun store the same day right after that to get the guns, then he's at home having dinner with his brother and daughter, his brother leaves, then the final break-in scene happens. The movie very poorly conveys 3 days passed, much less 6+ months for all of the ATF tax stamp shit. Oh and post '86 full autos are legal.... If you're a manufacturer, military, police, or a class 3 licensed FFL dealer. Look up post 86' dealer samples. It's still illegal for civilians to own full auto post samples-- even if you if were a dealer and your license expired, you would have to destroy or sell/relinquish them to another dealer or manufacturer. If you're ever wondering how people like FPS Russia were getting so many automatics to shoot, it's because they either are a dealer or know a dealer. I'm more lenient about the bad guys in Death Wish showing up with full autos since you can hand wave it with "oh it was stolen" or "it was illegally converted" or something. But Kersey magically pulling out out a ~completely legal~ full auto SBR that the cops had no problem with was groan inducing. Apparently Kersey spent another 2+ months plus a $500 tax to become a dealer, and some manufacturer randomly decided this new dealer operating out of his house is worth selling a post sample full auto to. It's not a major criticism the hoi polloi would care about, but as someone who actually knows what the laws are, it definitely put another dent in the movie that didn't need to be there.
pfft, next you will be telling me that surplus stores don't have massive hidden arsenals that are accessed by pressing a hidden button below the cash register.
so, when an actor reaches a certain age, he can just coast, collect his millions and not give a fuck and just phone it in...gotcha. explains the last 20 years of DeNiro's output.
Age doesn't matter. I seen him do better. I have heard of actors sleep walking through but this was first movie I saw in theaters where I can actually say I saw someone do that. He cared more about his performance in Die Hard 5 then this. This movie was way better then DH5.
That's been his modus operandi for a long time now unfortunately. He just acts like he's phoning it all the time with every role he does. He honestly hasn't really given a shit about actually acting since the late 90's it seems and that's why he'll be in just about any direct to DVD flick out there for the money.
I love these retrospectives on older 70's, 80's and 90's movies. They were usually more focused on their themes and not bound by politics and trends the way movies of today are.
Thank you, Razor. This movie will never compare to the cinematic masterpiece that is Death Wish. Even the worst Death Wish sequel was miles ahead of this. And as great as Willis is, he’ll never be as awesome as CHARLES MOTHERFUCKING BRONSON!!!
This film is still okay given the sea of super hero movies. As a remake it's decent and it also made the SJWs rage which is all the more reason for me to watch it.
9:33 He wasn't shot in the hand. The slide caught his flesh as it discharges the empty cartridge, draws back the hammer and loads the next round. A common wound suffered by inexperienced shooters who grip the gun wrong and don't know about recoil and moving parts.
Good review. I thought it was odd that the guy was able to legally own a modern, fully automatic weapon and odder still that the cop barely blinks at it.
It's suppressed which is illegal in IL It's an SBR which takes 6-12months to get a tax stamp and yeah, post '86, full auto which is very illegal nationwide.
Great review as usual! Beats watching the whole movie by a mile. Haven't watched a new movie since 2005ish and can't stomach paying hollywood anything. Either way, there definitely is a bit of suspension of disbelief required from what I can see.. as stated from the chiraq gunstore ad, to the apparently legal possession of post '86 full auto by non-leo..etc. then again it is catering to a new gen.
The AR he got out of the coffee table was a pistol, not an SBR. Still doesn't explain it being automatic, but try telling a normie why his "assault rifle" is semi auto at the theater.
Bruce Willis is fine actor but Charles Bronson was another league. Main failure of this movie is it is called Death Wish. And we already have remake of Death Wish, Harry Brown. Michael Caine instead of Bronson is acceptable for me.
My idea for a follow-up to Death Wish (2018) would be to start off with a flimsy plot contrivance whereby Paul Kersey has to have extensive facial reconstructive surgery so that he is no longer played by Bruce Willis, but rather by Robert Bronzi.
Thanks Razorfist, I am definitely buying the DVD for my Bruce Willis fanboy friend, and will get a copy for myself, because it is righteous goblin-shooting revenge goodness.
I enjoyed this Death Wish reboot. However, I didn’t really like the pacing of it. It never was boring but it had these interviews with disc jockeys laced throughout it basically spelling out the movie’s commentary to us. It was ham-fisted. Sort of like the radio broadcasts in the movie Killing Them Softly. How did Razorfist feel about those interviews distracting from a decent film?
Damn, I watched the first 5 mins of this thinking you were making a video about the movie being so bad I don't need to watch it. Then at the end you recommend it. So now I know the full plot in advance, BUT ... if it's unPC I'm gonna watch and enjoy on that recommendation alone! Thanks for the upload. High five on Death Wish 2 still being the best of course.
So you end with a recommendation, but problem: your review has already provided more entertainment value then even a good movie could. Hentai during the funeral scene, just, wow. Amazing work as usual sir.
I wouldn't be surprised if the jolly Roger commercial was a play on Krazy Kaplan's. They're across the state line in Indiana but advertised their wares prominently in the Chicago market to the point of legal intervention. They don't sell guns, though, but fireworks - most of which are considered "class D firearms" in Illinois, and - surprise! - are restricted. It's a microcosm of the open border issue Chicago has always had with NW Indiana.
This movie completely missed the ethos of the original Death Wish. That film wasn't highlighting the glorification of "balls to the wall" gun violence and gore (that's for the obligatory sequels lol), it was highlighting a man's personal journey behind sorting his ethics whether being a vigilante hell bent on bloodshed taking his anger out on any lay criminal, a simple man who ought to uphold his human right to self defense, or remain the same man that he always was in the name of "civility". This garbage fire was a cheap copy where the protagonist sees a guy shoot a dead animal and goes on a Gung-ho revenge rampage seeking out trouble (rather than letting trouble find him, as with the original). This reboot is essentially Death Wish with elements of I Spit On Your Grave spliced into it.
It's probably best compared to the second film than the first. In that one Bronson (like Willis) actually hunts down the shitheels who set him on that path to begin with.
This is without a doubt THE MOST Entertaining movie review I've ever seen. Totally earned the sub dude, I wish I could buy you a drink. Awesome video duder!!!
I could handwave the therapy scene in the film as Willis' character throwing off suspicion that he's going on a vendetta by making it look like he's trying more "healthy" (read: pussified) coping methods, because if there's anything we all know about big city PDs in Democrat strongholds, there's a Simpsons truism that describes them all to a T: "they're powerless to help you, but not to punish you", so it's best to keep the heat off however one can.
I'm glad you got around to reviewing this film in your awesome unique style. The film could have been so much better IMO and doesn't hold a candle to the original series. The ending however where he takes out the last guy was badass though. Bastard deserved it and then some.
Fuck it, I'm going to own it. I started laughing then went "Fuck! He got me. I'm pathetic. Well done, Razor." for knowing what hentai was playing during the funeral scene.
A white man shooting a black man.... in broad daylight.... in dowtown chicago... and actually walking away WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT was still more believable in this movie than the cartoon-character run gun store and his ability to acquire a full-auto SBR with suppressor.
Razor, I'll be the first to admit that I personally identify as a Democrat, California-born, and there are more than a few points in the field of political discourse we may vehemently disagree on...but you are still one of the most entertaining people I've found on this site in years, precisely for the fact you cut through the bullshit and speak your fucking mind and tell things like they are, the way most people with half a brain fucking should, instead of tiptoeing on eggshells in fear they piss off the almighty femlords of Tumblr on their thrones of overpriced toilet paper, a.k.a. modern gender studies textbooks. It personally embarrasses me to see the party I identify with become so castrated and inhabited by whiny professional victims who have no idea how to get up on their feet and actually face the world and its problems head on while actually bothering to have actual conversations with people of different viewpoints, and instead opt to make everything that gets under their nonexistent skin illegal and fuck shit up for the rest of us with some common goddamn sense. You are a veritable treasure trove of razor sharp (pun absolutely intended) and acidic wit on a motherfucking ninja master level, while also coming across as someone who's at least willing to look at everything objectively and actually engage in legitimate conversation instead of screaming about how right you are; again, like the cucks and professional artistic castrators of Tumblr and god-fucking-knows where else. Principal differences aside, you've earned a fan for life, good sir. Just thought, especially in this John-Holmes-provided-assfuck of a year so far, it would even remotely brighten the view behind those shades to know that at least one person on the other side of the spectrum still has half a brain and enough of a backbone to call the commies-in-all-but-name out on their culture-castrating horseshit and think for himself. God Fucking Speed, Sir!
That's because Grampy is played by Edward Woodward, the ORIGINAL Equalizer and, like Michael Caine's Alfred, living proof that old white guys CAN be badass
ok i think i'm gonna watch this movie.. that pizza looked damn good tho.. **EDIT*** ok so i watched it and i really liked it! it has small elements of breaking bad, die hard, pulp fiction, taken etc and very cool that he's a surgeon! so he knows how to inflict some excruciating pain! bruce willis is kind of in walter white mode for this movie. i don't know if you made that same parallel but i think it's very so.
