He means when they dumb down games instead of making it easier to learn. He also is talking about games journalists about this. He knows he wouldn't win the player-choice arguement so he acts as if adding difficulty options is an excuse to "dumb down" or degrade the experience of everyone else for the sake of a small minority. Patricia clearly debunks this position by showing Celeste, a game which has an *optional* mode that lets you slow down the speed of the game in order to help disabled gamers. Rags' ultimate position is to remove such modes and difficulty options from games, despite the fact that they are optional. He even doubles down on it implying that disabled gamers should be affected by their disability during their play. *He is not talking about games journalists here* and even if he was, how dumb would it be to design games around games journalists being able to go through them "the right way" because all of them (clearly a very large portion of gamers that we should care about) would try to cheat. It's like making a counter-strike map with transparent walls and tight, short corridors because maybe aimbots and wallhackers would play on them or the opposite - making a map that is just one long corridor and forcing everyone to play with AWPs. You're trying to design a game which would force the experience you personally want on everyone else and then pretending as if that's how games always were.

My local range has more women than men at local tournaments and is mostly ran by women, but since that’s anecdotal, USA Archery (you have to register with them for any major tournaments, so this is a representation of _competitive_ archers) reports 40% of their membership being female, and looking specifically at youth membership, it’s almost 50/50

Pretty sure Rags never said that survey represented "all gamers" In fact I'm pretty sure Rags didn't expect it to represent 100% of gamers. More detail in replies because I'll quote the whole section. But To take a survey with 2000 people in it, and extrapolate to such a large group as 'Gamers' which can include everything from E-sports players to grandmothers playing candy crush on their phones. It's not really a good enough number. Maybe 10 000? Even then it won't be that strong of a representation for such a large group with no official qualifier.

Rags assumes boys somehow have a natural inclination to play video games, despite the fact that boys and men were specifically targeted in advertisements to get them to play video games. 3. Ads and media give people a sense of what is socially acceptable and create biases. Video game ads created a narrative where they were for boys, promoted masculinity and were a safe space FOR BOYS. This created a stigma that games are for boys, which disincentivizes (not prevents) girls from giving games a shot while incentivizing boys to play. an alternative, clearer example is clothing: cloth is not inherently gendered but we ascribe meaning and gender to clothing based on advertisements and tradition. It's not. If this wasn't the case and boys and girls thought the same about video games, then these ads would have the same effect on both genders. They don't, however, which shows that girls think differently. Isn't that obvious already? I also fail to see how it's a bad thing to make a product for men and then advertise it to men. That happens to both genders across the board. Girls star in baby doll ads, boys star in BeyBlade ads. Boys star in violent shooter game ad, girls star in Pony Friends for NDS ad. This is not without reason. If advertisers found they could double their profits by making their violent shooter game as attractive to girls as it is to boys, then they absolutely would. They're not dumb. But they know that violent shooter game and pony pet game get picked up by one gender more than the other, so it's smarter to have that gender included in the respective ad and make the ad seem either masculine or feminine. Again, there is no issue as far as I can see. If a girl wants to play violent shooter game, she can. If a boy wants to play pony pet game, he can. If you let ads dictate what you can and can't be based on your _assumption_ of the social message the ad may or may not convey, you're the problem and not the ad.

This is literally what every single person who complains about stuff like "politics in games" does and I seriously can't understand how the ones who aren't just gifting don't notice it themselves.

Look I don’t like Rags at all but yeah long critique can be deep critique because that’s how long a person needs to pick apart every last detail of a movie while analysing. Mauler does his videos like this. A synopsis on the film and what takes place with a bit of commentary for comedic, creative and explanation as to why a certain plot point or action a character makes is good or bad in terms of writing. Then after all of that context and all of that depth into the movie and it’s characters he reaches a conclusion that he explains with it. It’s the epitome of P.E.E, Point, Evidence, Explain. He makes a point and shows you the evidence in the critique before explaining it. Just because some people don’t like longer videos doesn’t mean that it’s meaningless or not deep.

I’m not saying that short videos are not deep either. Quality and quantity after all. However, long videos do still have a place here and saying they aren’t deep or good just because of length alone is not exactly good.

I remember... ages ago... on WoW. I was normally an alliance player, but one day I decided to roll a Horde alt and picked the undead. I got to questing with this woman. After a while I mentioned my main was a hunter on the Alliance side: a Night Elf. She said her first character was one, too. They were the prettiest race and all, and she liked that. As did all the horny 13 y/o boys. Who were constantly begging her to strip naked and dance in town (the NE female dance was based on Alizee's "I'm Fed Up") Disgusted by this never ending harassment, she finally gave up and switched to the ugliest race... because as rotting husk of flesh NO ONE was asking her to dance. Naked or otherwise. I remember laughing at her getting that "win," but at the same time... that was really depressing. She had to abandon her character and chose one as ugly as possible just to have peace in the game. That little tale stuck with me, and i've been seeing so much more harassment just as an outsider (dude) looking in. Not just online games, either. I wound up quitting Imgur because of how skin crawlingly creepy so many of the male users were. Like the "heroes" always looking for nudes to steal. Not just solicit (which was near-constant), but screening through profiles looking for nudes some woman forgot to mark as hidden/private... these creeps get so many upvotes for their "service." And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't really know how to end this. I guess just I get it? Even as a guy, I get it (as much as a guy can?) I hate how women, just trying to have fun and enjoy themselves, like me, can't relax without the constant threat of some mouth breather giving them a hard time. And yeah, I know, online harassment is just the beginning of it: it starts in real life. And yet, games are supposed to be escapist fun, but so many men can't even let y'all ladies have even that? Not saying there is no bias at all in the algo, but it's possible that you get more alt right stuff because RU-vid somehow remembers your history. i agree that Riley's idea wasn't full proof, but man that comment section on that video is fucking hell. It was remarks of "CRITICISM =/= HARASSMENT" while being filled with people misgendering her (aka harassing her). But I also don't agree with a lot of the things Riley says. It's just that Rags went after something so pointless that it made me start to really see who I was watching.

@Jeremiah Ramirez Okay, I see your point, but let me put out a hypothetical. You're a content creator on RU-vid, you make a controversial video that people don't exactly give with. And by that, I mean you get sent hateful, downright nasty comments on a daily. You get told to kill yourself or that the person commenting kill you. Yeah, you see a comment like that, you're gonna ignore it. But it's every day you get tons and tons of comments like those. At that point, you can't just *ignore* it. Especially when social media and the internet is such a big part of modern day culture. Not only do you get comments like this oj the daily, you also have people making videos about you saying that you're wrong or you're trying to limit their freedom of speech or whatever. The videos are fine, you can ignore them and say the person just has different opinions. But you can't ignore their fans. Obviously, the creators of those videos didn't tell their fans to go and harass you. They didn't even insinuate it. They even say in the video to not do that. But not everyone can control their fans. So you get the vocal minority of these groups saying the same things to you again and again. In a situation like that, you cannot ignore it. You can't just "close your laptop" or "go to a different website." Because it follows you. And those comments don't go away if you leave. If you ever wanna go back to Twitter or RU-vid or whatrver, those hateful, spite fill, malicious comments are still there. Again, I don't agree with a lot of Riley's ideas. I honestly don't like her content or her as a creator. And I'm not saying Rags didn't have okay points. A broken clock is right twice a day. And obviously, Riley's plans would never get implemented. She's not big enough to actually have a voice for RU-vid to care about. And they don't take care of the problems they have now, why would they implement a super complex blocking system that would have even MORE issues they wouldn't fix? So you don't have to worry about your feed being fucked with if someone blocks you.

The idea behind it is that if it is there it is a temptation and if it isn't there you are forced to overcome the challenge and you know that nobody cheated by making it easy for that one hard boss then go right back I am for some things for people with disabilities but I'm generally against it in other cases in games that have that perfected difficulty like dark souls because you are at no disadvantage from any other person, you have to earn it like everyone else did because you are just as capable as anyone else.

@@thomaslang7992 if you're talking about in game advantages, you could just split online play between difficulties. But I don't think that's what you mean, I think you mean it in a more social way. Like, players wouldn't be able to have the same sense of pride in something if they knew other players got that thing more easily. Is that a healthy way to view a game like dark souls? Maybe. There is some competitive element to it after all. But why couldn't you have an offline easy mode then? You can't switch difficulties and online play is disabled, or limited to easy mode players. It ostensibly shouldn't affect your gameplay experience.

Kurt Eichorn (I was referring to pride thing) I personally think it healthy to think of a game that way because it provides something to overcome that you know you couldn't have cheated (well you could have hacked it) around and gives you a sense of pride, you strove towards is finally complete on the basis of your own skill but I will say this is probably a subject I've thing and you will probably feel different Iw I'll say that most games probably should have a difficulty setting because this has to be done very well to work correctly

@@targetbuddy5 it would betray the vision of the creators themselves. Miyazaki has stated several times that the reason Dark Souls games don't have difficulty options is so that every player has the same intended experience with the game.

Reminds me of the people who ranted about the auto-steer and auto-accelerate feature in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Things like this are literally a non-issue, they are helpful to people who need it and don't matter to the people who don't. I still think it's all elitism at the end of the day, like the pushback against a ln easy mode in darksouls, which is only there because a certain set of "gamers" couldn't wear their badge of "I have beat hard game" quite as proudly anymore -,-

@@poccer7722 yeah, i just recently started playing Hades which has a God Mode option. Option being the keyword. It just helps people who want to enjoy rouge-likes but maybe don't have the dexterity for it to actually have fun instead of give up. The whole point of video games is for people to play them, and it's beneficial for game developers to add in things so people can.
