RagWing Low Aspect Ratio Experiment-Lazy Bee replica

An experiment, which was abandoned due too little to no interest in the design and goals not completely met. Theses flights were on a farm hay field fairly rough and bumpy which is why I had ballon tires on it. Flew ok, just to heavy and faster than an ultralight should be. It was interesting. Wing span was 17 feet and cord a bit over 7 foot. The wings outer panel folded down towards the ground. Year was 1998 I believe. Craft was cannibalized for its engine, etc and taken out of service. Much respect for the little motor pulling all that drag around the sky.
@myotherusername9224
@myotherusername9224 Год назад
" all that drag " how much drag do you think it had, and what do you think was the cause of the drag ? It was too fast for part 103 with a Kawasaki 340 if I recall correctly so I doubt it had a lot of drag. Certainly looks less draggy than a trike and wing weight shift aircraft or a powered parachute or a open frame gyro.
@jacktar4421
@jacktar4421 Год назад
You think? So the exaggerated chord length, camber and incidence angle of the aerofoil produce minimal drag? The aerodynamic efficiency at that steep angle of attack in level flight must be excellent for sure. Much respect for the little motor pulling all that drag around the sky!

@@jacktar4421 IDK about this individual plane, but the very low aspect-ratio type does not need to always fly at such steep _*A*_, very slowly. Many of aspect ratio

Roger Mann wrote " it was a very fast aircraft in level flight.....not seen in video much." So yes, not that much drag, unless the pilot is using the high A wing-tip vortex-driven "parachute lift" to fly super-slowly. This "parachute lift" is seen in the 1930s Arup, and Nemeth, and the Farman 1020, in the '40s Eshelman and the Vought V-173, in the '80s Hatfield "little Bird" and the '90s "Facetmobile.. All of these have demonstrated super-slow stall-proof flight and efficiency at cruise. The extreme drag caused by the parachute lift phenomenon is elective and temporary.

Look at him go! Any additional information on the plane? Engine, glide ratio? People are bashing it here, but to me looks pretty doable. Certainly doesn't fly worse than a Cri-Cri or Pou-du-Ciel.

Some of the Farman-inspired biplanes of pre-WWI and during WWI were not only single-surface but had single wire control of ailerons. On the ground the ailerons hung straight down. Air flow was what pushed them up. Yet they flew.

Individual results may vary, and mechanics and iteration of a concept make the difference, but a common misconception seen everywhere and here in these comments is that a very low aspect ratio must have very high drag. Very many examples have shown this to be false as a rule. Many have proven to be sleek and quick on available power. See the '30s Nemeth "parachute plane". Biplane fuselage with a 15' diameter parasol wing. Faster than the original, 45 degree climb, 60 degree descent with near-zero landing roll in any wid. Stall-spin proof. Similar to the '30s Farman 1020, also faster than the monoplane which the fuselage came from, similar abilities and stall-proof. Most famous, the Arup plane from Indiana ("Air + Up"). S-2 was the basis for the Vought V-173, and proved that it did not need the over-complex situation with the props (NACA tunnel tests with the Vought / Zimmerman plane found that it did not gain anything from that situation of the props)>Arup S-2 was 790 lbs, flew 85 kts on 37 hp,

@@SR-gs8zo What you believe is irrelevant to the facts of history. Yes, the Arup and the Nemeth and others like the Facetmobile were measured and found to have super-sly speeds and to be resistant to or proof against stalling. Sorry it you don't "believe" it. The Arups and the Nemeth didn't have to conform to any part 103 rules, so that's irrelevant.
