Well they have power they are just the laziest gods ever. The elder gods are invdividually the strongest after the one being and together they were able to defeat the one being,Shinnok at full power and defeated easily shao Kahn with souls in mk9 ending. They have power but they refuse to act unless the realms are threatened from merging which the one being emerges. The problem is Shinnok can destroy the realms himself and now these guys with elder god equivalent power

I recall Quan Chi calling out the Elder God's to Raiden,"toothless worms", in MK9. I guess most of the bad guys kinda feel pity to the heroes when the only good elder gods is Raiden and Fujin, while the only elder gods with teeth is Kronika and Shinnok (and a bit of Cetrion... who are related together...yikes. And worst off, most of the solutions to the threats against the realms were either soft handed punishments (Shinnok, Shang tsung), misguided decisions (Shao Khan), or even just bad luck and neglect (Daegon). Lord Liu Kang is weirdly a step up.

I really wish they'd flesh out Shinnok's hatred for the Elder Gods more because there's a PLETHORA of very valid reasons for why they suck

And one of these guys is his sister, Cetrion.

Largely up to interpritation. Firstly is the arrogance. Secondly, it seems Shinnok want the power, not to be ruled over. And third, as we learned from Kronoka in 11, he was built to be pure evil, while Cetrion was his opposite in good.

Raiden: Well you're supposed to be the God of death, but you entrusted your evil plans to a greedy sorcerer and his merry little band of fuck-ups who were so bad at necromancy that I bet they couldn't even resurrect from erectile dysfunction even if you gave them a step-by-step herbal recipe that they could make in their own backyard! Shinnok: Raiden, look at me. I was cast down and banished for speaking the truth. Meanwhile, you and Fujin literally had to depower yourselves and help your allies because the Elder Gods are basically trans dimensional politicians. The only reason I felt bad for Rain, Taven and Daigon was because, surprise surprise, Gods are terrible parents. Raiden: Okay fine! What's your point? Shinnok: If I get incapacitated all over again, because you of all people should know I can't die, promise me one thing. One, singular, thing. Raiden: What? Shinnok: If I permanently die or, myself forbid, if I get erased from whatever brand new timeline gets created, do not call upon the Elder Gods. They're self-righteous idiots who don't know the *first thing* about doing their fucking jobs and they'll only call upon any nearby mortal who has the misfortune of "hearing voices". Raiden: I don't know what to say. Shinnok: Just say yes or so help me, I will make sure that Shao Khan has access to both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung's skills/abilities in the next reset. Raiden: Done. Shinnok: Good, now teleport us out of here. It smells burnt giant bodies and privilege in here.

It is canon it is a separate timeline. The deadly alliance weren’t that strong originally. Well at least not a ywhre near matching Shinnoks power even as a fallen elder god both Shang Tsung and quan chi feared Shinnok and flat out admitted that they do not want to face Shinnoks wrath even as a fallen elder god prettt much confirming shinnok even as a fallen god was stronger than they were. Fallen elder god shinnok would still destroy the deadly alliance theh feared shinnok in earlier moments they even said they needed to gain shinnoks power to face him. Dragon king was only powerful bcuz he possessed the kamidogu when he faced the deadly alliance and honestly I think he would still defeat them even without it not bcuz he was that strong without the kamidogu but bcuz the deadly alliance is literally the two weakest bosses of the series needing to team up in order to even be a credible threat to begin with. Onaga had the kamidogu at the end of deceptions konquest and that was the events right before the deception intro where raiden and deadly alliance battle then Onaga and them. Onaga was indeed very powerful with the kamidogu but it was bcuz of them that he achieved that power without them he wasn’t that powerful in Armageddon. In fact it was Onaga who flat out stated he needed Blazes power in order to then go after Shinnok he also mentioned if Shinnok regained his full power that he would be amongst the dead only further proving Shinnoks dominance over all these guys. Even shao Kahn was reluctant to admit that Shinnok would be the end of all things if he regained power again and that the realms would fall. Onaga was actually a servant of Shinnok before. The same way Onaga was once Shao Kahn’s master,Shinnok was also at one time Onagas master.that is something that doesn’t get mentioned often enough and not a lot of people know about. Onaga with kamidogu may defeat a full power elder god shinnok but even then shinnok at full power wasn’t far from that level of power he would lose but he wouldnt be outclassed he’d just put up a good fight and lose but still its the point that Shinnok was literally a villain that was naturally as powerful as he was and he had to have his power reduced. Onaga on the other hand needed the kamidogu to achieve power that rivaled or surpassed the elder gods but without the kamidogu Onaga himself would was never equal to Shinnok or other elder gods otherwise Onaga wouldn’t have a need for them to begin with

The original deadly alliance killed Liu kang by sneak attack and killed a clone of shao Kahn and were unfortunate to die at Onaga ONLY bcuz he had the kamidogu without them maybe Onaga would’ve won anyway but it wouldn’t have been a slaughter it would’ve been a fight Onaga wouldn’t have come out unscathed had he not had the kamidogu but he still would’ve won. Deadly alliance originally wasn’t very strong they just faced fortunate circumstances in their favor like I literally just explained but unfortunate end when facing someone who had the kamidogu (it literally could’ve been anyone else who had the kamidogu and that person would’ve been the strongest still) but this one here is much more powerful than the original now they are true deities

Well they did help Raiden back in mk9.

They made Scorpion champion of the eg, the also helped raiden beat shao in mk9, and Cetrion kept mk11 plot moving.

Kronika does not always have the same endgame while crafting a timeline. Shao Khan would have ruled if Raiden did not rewind time on the pyramid of Argus.

Two sorcerers that stole Shinnoks full elder god power that he’s been seeking the entire series to restore Reminds me of Onaga which used the kamidogu to do the same to become much b stronger than he himself was on his own. He was powerful only bcuz he used the relics which contained the one beings power but he himself was both manipulated directly by the one being and a puppet for it to begin with bcuz the one being wanted to become whole. Originally Onaga was NOT originally evil like he was shown to be in deception that was actually the one being directly influencing him and his evil was actually the one beings essence. Onaga himself was once a good powerful but good ruler to his outworld ppl then shao Kahn killed him when Kahn was only general or advisor shao and much weaker but as Kahn became shao Kahn or emperor shao Kahn he became much stronger and it makes sense why he later killed Onaga in Armageddon bcuz he surpasses his master after his death. To avoid being killed by shao Kahn who has been emperor for a long time now Onaga wanted the kamidogu but it was once again really onagas thinking but really it was the one being influencing Onaga when he died to revive himself to gather the kamidogu so the one being himself returned it was nvr about Onaga although the game made it seem that way. Similarly Shang tsung and quan chi have managed to steal an elder gods power shinnok

Who says just because they took shinnoks power that they want to destroy everything? They never have they’ve only wanted to rule all things and all realms. Shang Tsung only wanted to destroy the single timeline of Liu kang in mk1 only bcuz it is the timeline that the Liu kang that defeated Shang Tsung in mk11 came from that’s it. Also quan chi and Shang Tsung have turned on shinnok and shao Kahn. They used shinnoks own power,the relics which contain his full elder god power (formerly his amulet) which I think the relics combine to create the amulet But they used his own power to become powerful why would he not want revenge against them too!? I don’t think he cared for Shang tsung botj bcuz he was just completely inferior to him but also because he was only a minion himself to shao Kahn and shinnok is above them all so why would he care? Now he has a reason to battle him for revenge and take back his power
