My cousins had this game, we would all play it, we could get about 70% of the way through. The oldest cousin ( like 13-14) would sometimes beat it for us, he got tired I guess of five 7-9 year olds begging him over and over to show us. He was considered one of the cool kids at school, so it was awesome when he would stop his cool teenager stuff and play with us kids. We were all amazed at what he did, we really couldn't follow the last leg of the game, but we loved it. Then years later they were selling their atari stuff and I bought a few of their games and this was one of them. After a few days, I also beat it, felt pretty awesome, just going by what I remembered my cousin doing years ago and trying to figure it out. I still have the game in my collection to this day.
Well done! Forty years after first playing it as a kid and not being able to do it, I learn about the Yar Easter Egg. My parents obtained a solution a few years later which finally enabled us to beat the game.
I never beat this as a kid, but having played again recently, I have no idea how I even got as far as I did back then! I don't think I ever figured out how to properly identify the right place to dig. Without the instruction manual or any indication of what the icons mean, or how the inventory works, it's pure frustration. We bought the cartridge at a flea market and had to discover everything ourselves. The biggest thing was figuring out that player 2 controls the inventory!
I solved this game in the 80's by buying a Video Game magazine that told you step by step how to solve the game, than I told everyone at school, I solved it on my own.
I remember my dad and his friend, at the kitchen table, mapping out the game trying to figure out how the hell to complete it. lol. They played for hours.
I ordered the hint guide to beat the game in 1984. My dumb ass still couldn't beat it so I called Atari and they transferred me around until somebody could help me.
Entering the secret room with the medallion was a serious flex. I thought I understood this game well, but I never knew you could do that. Still... all this means is that _Raiders of the Lost Ark (Atari 2600)_ needs a "100%" category that requires people to blow a hole in an arbitrary section of wall. I wonder how high the rating can theoretically go in a TAS-perfect speedrun. It only went down like 10 pixels here, which is definitely the best result I've ever laid eyes on.
I think the best my friend and I got was like 28 or 18 pedestal points. Something like that. Hard to remember as that was over 40 years ago, and we were like 7 years old.
I have been playing this game for 30 years both on the original Atari and emulators. I *never* knew you could use the amulet to enter the temple instead of blowing a hole in the wall.
They say it's in a synagogue or temple in Ethiopia. But it was probably melted down when captured by the Babylonians. That's assuming it really looks like that. Some Hebrews that went to South Africa by way of Yemen were said to have a holy drum called the Ark that they had to repair or replace once, but didn't when the second broke and they converted or something.
Seems cryptic now but at the time everyone was playing and talking about it so it wasn't hard to figure out the game as you would go to school, and someone would tell you how to do everything.
no one i knew ever beat the game. It was fun to see what you'd have to do after all those years. But honestly that was a very unsatisfying ending. A reveal, a big light show or something would have made it worth it.
@@JustMe99999 He did. They took out a few more points you could have gotten just before release so now there's no way to use the scissor-lift to get to the Ark. As to unsatisfying ending, check out Pitfall! I spent hours mapping that thing out, then came up with a solution, then learned how to jump 19 scorpions without losing more than 2 lives. When I got to the last treasure, the clock stopped and the game froze, just like when you run out of time! They put the fireworks in Pele's soccer for when you score a goal. What a waste. At least in Raiders, you get the music and scissor-lift like other endings as well as the initials.
Twin Galaxies (aka the so called offical source) has no entries for fastest completion time, but it is up there. www.twingalaxies.com/scores.php?platformid=5&keyword=Raiders%20of%20the%20Lost%20Ark
The players manual says the higher the pedestal when your raccking up points by the height of the pedestal that if it goes to the very top and reaches the ark something will happen read the manual. Thanks and happy hunting!
@@sandal_thong8631 I still have my original cartridge from the initial release in 1982. I recall sometimes beating the game resulted in a score so high that Indy was overlapping or even sticking out of the top of the ark at the top of the screen. I never noticed anything special happening when this occurred and no idea how I did it. Perhaps there was a later cartridge release which was patched to prevent Indy from going all the way to the top.
@@ClassicGamerB Maybe that's a glitch or misremembering, but I don't see it happening in any of the videos out there. When I won it didn't go to the ark or the top, and when others won by getting a few more points including finding the Yar, it doesn't reach the ark or the top either.
I'm looking into running this game and one thing that I wanted to note is that the in-game clock seems to start running on Power On (or when you hit the Reset switch). Which means that if we're starting the speedrun timer when you push start on the title screen, you can save time by waiting 25 seconds or so on the title screen before starting so you don't have to wait as long for the medallion to drop (and you did wait on the title screen for some time). So now the question is: Should the speedrun timer start when you power on/reset the system, or when you press past the title screen? I can't think of any precedent for this except for in TMNT (NES) where they try to press start at a very specific time on the title screen in order to manipulate the RNG, but that's not quite the same. In that case, they don't start the timer at power on.
Aye, I do remember some runs whereas I had issues picking up a few things such as the medallion. It would simply not spawn for the longest time or, I would kill a snake and then poof it was there! But I don't think it actually changed anything really... because getting the medallion super fast or not, did not change the occurrence of the sun rise. But if the "power on" timer is true, then it would make sense to start the timer at "power on"
I'll have to see how much else it affects. I asked a couple other retro game speedrunners and they said that they think it'd still start when you first have control of the character since that's standard. I'm glad to have your run to reference though. This game would be confusing without help.
@@hanyuguo Oh yeah.... Both my copies of TSE and Mafat are sealed copies... And I still have my copies from Vic Tokai of the Impossible Hit AND Hopper The Border. P.S. I HAVE THE MANGA COLLECTION TOO! 🤣😁👍
If you look at the top center of the screen, you can see a Yar appear. That is how to get the Easter egg in the game (seen at the end - in place of a few of the implements are the initials HSW2).
By the way, I see you have any% glitchless and 100% glitchless on speedrun.com, in addition to regular any%. Are there any glitches in the game that you know of? I just saw one that crashes the game, but that's all I know.
Holy fuck how did people play this before lol. I’d go nuts trying to figure it out. Now days you have you tube but back in the day maybe just magazines
Dude when I was a kid, I remember my dad and his friend chain smocking at the kitchen table, drawing maps on paper and trying to figure out the shit LOL great memories
they just released a atari collection 1 and 2 for Ps4 with online leaderboards for scores, I might have to pick one up....doesnt have any activision games on it which im disappointed in. Collection 2 looks to be better choice of games
The Retro Challenger Ⓥ correct i want the physical copy just incase its a hunk of shit or has bad emulation i can get most of my money back selling it. They released em for both Ps4 and Xbox Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1 and Volume 2 are the titles of the games and they are only $19.99 retail
It pretty much serves the same purpose as the Ankh - only it doesn't teleport you to the mesa field and if you miss, you can't hit the button and re-appear in the middle of the field - you either need a parachute or lose a life.
Merci! a partir de maintenant, je vais toujours avoir un deuxième caméra sur moi. Je crois que c'est la prochaine étape pour me rendre a 4 million de sub!
