“It’s not the years, honey. It’s the mileage.”
Raiders of the Lost Ark is an unimpeachably great movie that gave us the second iconic Harrison Ford role of the era with Indiana Jones. It’s hard to imagine a world without our most famous archeologist, or to understate the franchise’s influence on the adventure genre, but at the time there was a weird amount of pressure to succeed. Steven Spielberg was coming off a string of movies that had gone over budget, the most recent of which was an outright flop. Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the budget-minded approach Spielberg, George Lucas and crew took to the production, the incredible accidents responsible for some of the coolest imagery in the film and just how many people were violently ill during production. So buckle up, this is almost 2 hours worth of Raiders talk to find out where it ranks on the CineFix Top 100!
Meanwhile, somebody took the lid off of producer Dan’s algorithm so keep your eyes shut. No matter what happens, don’t look at it. JUST KEEP YOUR EYES SHUT, MARION!
CineFix Top 100 is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Our Executive Producers are Clint Gage, Dan Parkhurst and Corrado Caretto. Logo and graphic design by Eric Sapp and title animations by Casey Redmon.

Hands down my favorite line from this movie and possibly all movies is when Indy is explaining dates to Marion and he says “You eat um!” His voice kind of squeaks when he says it and I giggle every time! My family has adopted it as well. We say it all the time!

One of my favourite Anecdotes came from Cracked's After Hours when they point out that over the course of the movie Indy has no bearing on the events or final outcome because the Nazi's accomplish every point of their plan but end up melting their own faces.
@ReverendMeat51
@ReverendMeat51 11 месяцев назад
I noticed that a long time ago too, surprised it wasn't mentioned. The same can be said for Crusade as well. If Indy just got his dad out of the castle and laid low the nazis would've either died in the traps leading to the grail, choosing a false grail, or falling into the abyss upon crossing the seal

I just love the little mystical touches that emphasise that the Ark really is not of this world. Starting from the boiling storm clouds spiralling over the Well of Souls as Indy's team work to open it, then the Ark burning away the Nazi symbol on the crate as though it cannot countenance any competing iconography.

Great movie, great talk. Indy's first-shot reveal always reminds me of Harry Lime's The Third Man emergence. Also, the theme of Indy being more comfortable chasing artifacts in the field than giving lectures in the classroom not only fuels the film, but lays the groundwork for his relationship with his father, who is his opposite. Or looking at it another way, Raiders is the 2-hour cold open to Last Crusade.

With this being the end to your first season of this, I just wanted to thank you all for this whole series. This has been a great way to learn more about movies I already love and find out more about movies I need to watch. Can't wait for the next season! My one suggestion for a movie list that Raiders should be on is a Top 10 Movie McGuffins - though I guess it might be a cross of McGuffin for most of the movie until it becomes a "Big Dumb Object" by the end.

I never thought about it, but the beginning of Return of the Jedi works the same way in which the whole Jabba event has nothing to do with the rest of the movie other than getting Han back. It's used as a reintroduction to the crew and their current status quo.

24:48 "light just streaming through things", you instantly reminded me of the Japanese sentiment "komorebi" (木漏れ日), light streaming through trees. the phrase doesn't simply describe the visual, but also implies the feeling that comes from setting that kind of display. i don't know much beyond that, but it tickled me that you reminded me of that concept.

This conversation is making me realize something about the IJ character. All the beats and musical notes identifying the very real dangers around him in the present is bc he's so unaware. It's to note to the audience that he's not aware so you have to be made aware that there's more danger present. He's ironically flawed. He dives into the past and fully aware of the numerous dangers placed by people to protect their culture. Yet, he's hilariously unaware of how at risk his life is on the way and after grave robbing. Which is why he keeps losing to his competitor. Just a thought 🤷🏽

@15:16 I have an original script given to me by Kasdan. What you ae saying is not the case. @20:21 He runs like that because of an accident that occurred in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. He tore his ACL during the plane sequence, and then he suffered a spinal injury during INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, so cut him some slack. @39:27 The "I love you" eye message was a last min suggestion by a crew member. (The AC I believe) Spielberg loved it, and immediately called for "sharpies". I don't know who wrote it on her. @48:19 Lucas wanted her to be 15 when she first dated Indy, who at the time was Abner's assistant/protégé. Him dating his daughter at such a young age is what drove he and Indy apart.

*INDIANA JONES SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE ARK* (my observation) In Egypt, Indy and Sallah are in Egypt having the headpiece inscription translated by a man called Imam. IMAM: This is a warning not to disturb the Ark of the Covenant. INDY: What about the height of the staff, though? Did Belloq get it off of here? IMAM: Yes. It is here. This were the old way, this mean six kadam high. SALLAH: About 72 inches. IMAM: Wait! (Imam turns headpiece over) ''And take back one kadam to honor the Hebrew God whose Ark this is.'' INDY: You said their headpiece only had markings on one side. Are you absolutely sure? (Sallah nods) INDY: Belloq's staff is too long. They're digging in the wrong place. As Sallah stated, "six kadam high" is about 72 inches, which equates to six feet-making 1 kadam equal to 1 foot. Taking back 1 kadam would make the height of the staff 5-feet-tall. Indy/Harrison Ford is about six-feet-tall, yet in the map room, the staff which should only be 5-feet-tall is at least an entire foot taller than Indy. The length of dowel to make the staff appears to be cut too long, and this would actually make Indy's staff around 1 kadam/foot longer than Belloq's staff. It was Indy's staff that was too long, yet he was digging in the right place.

I love CineFix but I absolutely hate this list. IGN should have had a subscriber based poll wiGth CineFix employees getting double weighted votes and additional weight to mentions on CineFix to compile the results. This 4 person favorites and a mysterious algorithm might feel cool but it makes a once fun trip into cinema feel more like wasted time. AND on top of that these 90 minute podcasts are faaaarrr too long!!! Do the poll then do a 1 hour pod for each 10 of 100-11 and an hour for each of the top 10. CineFix used to be interesting!!!! You know genuinely I don't feel this series or any of it's single film is considered greatest. They could be great but definitely not greatest because the film , it's characters and it's plot everything is demeaning to other cultures and I found the protoganist character so arrogant and racist . Even the whole movie especially temple of doom is disgusting, racist and pathetic. I think the movie could have been way way better in characters and in story .

Surely this one beats robocop. No offence to robocop, love that film but raiders is the first possible top 10. Lets see the algorithm prove me wrong

This is a great movie. I grew up with it, but I find it to be too long. Not sure what I would cut, but wish I could trim 20-30 minutes.

I don’t think there is anything that can be cut. It is pretty trim the way that it is. There aren’t any unnecessary scenes.

@@mangoman1616somewhere around the boat and submarine scenes I check my watch. They get the Ark only to lose it right away. Of course the Indy/Marion scene on the boat is a must keep.

@@DocXango huh? You telling us you think Raiders is great?

The whole point is that Raiders is an homage to 1930s and 40s serials. With a cliffhanger at the end of each episode. It also has one of the greatest ending shots ever.
