Why does no-one challenge Deutche Bank to see and record the art collection they have? Nobody is allowed to see it and it is considered one of the largest private collections in the world... Seems very strange.

I'd like to point out to Ian the Scottish historian that Monte Cassino abbey only became a military position once the Allies had destroyed it. General Albert Kesselring the man in charge of Axis troops in Italy at the time was a practicing Catholic and had felt uneasy about using it for military purposes prior to the Allies reducing it to a mass of rubble. Moreover and this might sound pedantic but the Herman Goering Divison was a parachute regiment and not an SS unit ... Goering was after all head of the Luftwaffe.

I would wager that at least half of the still missing pieces reside in Russia.. they would have kept whatever they wanted... I personally believe that's what happened to the amber room. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in this documentary..unless I missed it?

I agree. They will not let anyone from other countries visit their warehouses. Also, private collectors and also the Swiss banks in Zurich have vaults that have not been opened since WWII.

The Hermann Goering Division was NOT an SS division - it was a Luftwaffe unit! A strange Luftwaffe Panzer Division eventually, but a start on Goering's own private army!

I think, I'd put the lost lives first. We can always make new art. A large percentage of artworks in our museums are forgeries anyway. The curators are well aware of it but won't admit it. Tom Keating said many of the very famous paintings are his works! There could be another documentary made about that angle of the history of these famous artworks. But this is I'm sure all true. Thank you.

Unlikely that Ratcliffe himself as in the war, although perhaps "his" regiment was. (Militarily affiliation is still critically important for a British Gentleman to be truly genuine, truly authentic, i.e., have 'cred' in Society.)

No, it was taken apart and hidden, so it could be retrieved later. People still look for it now. The replica of the room was made, thanks to drawings and pictures of the original room.

I really enjoy these documentaries but I sort of find it a little bit irritating by the use of so many narrators switching places. Some of them you can't understand very well. And I just think they go between one narrator to another one too much. Other than that the historic footage is wonderful.
