In retrospect, especially when considering the decades old grumbling of "It just ain't the same" of countless other gaming series (justified or not), Wolfenstein managed to stay the same at its core: while shooting the darn nazis you find out that they found a new occult thing that gives them the edge, so you gotta shoot them some more. Yet around that basic premise, each iteration managed to execute its own flavour of "Wolfenstein" really well. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is one of the better compromise between the cinematic linear narrative prevalent in 00s FPS games and the side exploration elements of the 90s. Wolfenstein 2009 took the Indiana Jones influences that RtcW occasionally delved with and just dialled that to 11 and ran with it. And the Bethesda Wolfensteins managed to build one of the more fascinating takes at "What if the Nazis won" alt-history. And that's just the singleplayer. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory arguably and accidentally pioneered the class-based free-to-play FPS multiplayer model. Also this channel is criminally underrated. But considering the content already out and what might be coming, I think the channel might be taking off like a rocket soon. ...although that might be smell of the darn nazis being up to no good again. Hard to tell.
Great review. I love all the Wolfenstein games but this is the one that I keep coming back to every few years. Still have my physical copy and I literally just keep it in my CD Drive permanently (because who uses CD's anymore??).
The Kreisau circle was real. It wasn't armed though. They were the civilian group that ended up coconspiring with the Stauffenberg group and were planning the provisional government for after the coup by the Stauffenberg group succeeded. Needless to say, that didn't happen as planned.
The one thing I do remember about Wolfenstein 09 was the pencil in the apple sound effect for the bayonet jab, and me violently recoiling when I caught a soldier in the neck with it. Damn good game that really needs re release/remaster right now.
Really love this game! Actually bought it day one for the X360 back in 2009. Also really fun to go back to once in a while, since this game is very replayable (unlike the newer entries...). Last but not least, if you want a Wolfenstein-like movie, i can't help but recommand ' 'Zone Troopers' ' from 1985, which is like a 1950's style low budget cheesy b-movie with a heart of gold. It has alien instead of paranormal/occult, but it has this Wolfenstein tone.
@@SpaghettiKozak No problem. You should be able to find it on youtube easily. But if video compression isn't your cup of tea, it's avaiable on Blu-ray for the best viewing experience.
I've been playing through that slowly, but it just doesn't do it for me. Too slow, battles uneventful, etc. Now 2009 Wolfenstein can get repetitive at times, but once you get some of your powers and some of the decent weapons, things get a lot better.
When it came out the graphics and gore was jus next level. I still remember all the secrets you gotta get creative to find the Nazi gold hidden throughout the maps.
hey, that this is removed from everywhere is crazy, I just installed this to play along with return to castle wolfenstein, but the good thing is that it can be found easily and it is preserved yarrr (after the trainwreck of new colossus I just had to check the first 2 games and how great they were)
I did enjoy this game on PS3 but my all time favourite Wolfenstein game will always be ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein’ that game still looks great and I often play it on my laptop. The crypt levels are especially epic!
I'm really glad I'm not the only one who remembers and still plays this game nowadays. I really hope it will at least be put on GOG on some day. 11:45 - BTW, this is wrong. Your weapons do have assigned number keys, starting with 5 (Kar98), then 6 (MP40), and so on... try it!
I'm also getting the game on my console .it's a bit pricy but I'm excited .I also hate the protagonists that just can't stop talking unnecessary things to themselves .there are a lot of them currently in the gaming industry .it's something that really annoys me but BJ from Bethesda wolfenstein games is an exception .idk I don't hate him .I like whenever he talks
This game really does have a weapon switching problem but for anyone playing this these days keybinds i use are : 1 sniper powers are on E,2,3,4 as default q stg 44 z flamethrower x tesla gun c BFG (crouch moved to ctrl) v particle beam mouse 4 rocket mouse 5 melee (if you have a extra button mouse) mp40 is scrolling down once on mouse from stg44 because the two are interchangeable you can set it to 5 but that is a bit further than all other buttons This might seem complicated you are not switching between all guns constantly and it works very well for me
@4:25 Appreciated the reference to Operation Anthropoid amongst movie references and technical game talk! Haven't seen the movie, but read Laurent Binet's book "HHhH". He is a quirky writer, not a typical historian in ways sometimes brilliant but also at times annoying. But, once the book gets going, it is gripping, with the heroes experiencing comical snafus and bravely fighting to the end. I wish it could be made into a game where the players are able make the heroes survive the mission.
Loved this game, I remember most if you shot a German soldier in the neck or bashed them or something like that they would start throwing up blood everywhere and as a kid in 2010 I was just in total awe at it Everything about it is great, from the first super soldier with the particle cannon to the ones that I just think of as Morpheus that run around really fast and the Tesla weapon and the invisible assassins, the new trilogy doesn’t have any special weapons like this as I recall and suffers for this reason I played the game again last year I think, and my view of this game was not just nostalgia (although it is admittedly very easy which I didn’t think when I played as a kid, I did the achievement for beating it on max difficulty in under 7 hours or whatever on my first try after 8 years) the only complaint I have about it was the multiplayer was pretty mediocre but overall it’s a fantastic game One last thing, and I keep having to edit this, but even the poor areas of the game have charm to me. Like the overused assets for resistance fighters, I was a kid when I first played this and it reminded me of how I would reuse toy soldiers since we couldn’t afford many. The German in the game is also all really bad and the voice actors are all American and it plays huge into stereotypes but it’s just so goofy that you can’t hate it it has a charm to it. Also, for the weapons switch, I played this on ps3 and it had a weapon wheel and it would freeze your game to let you choose a new weapon
Im glad I'm not the only one who thought of this while playing this game. I just played it yesterday for the first time and it's one of the most gruesome games I've ever played. Even compared to the newer games. The bullet damage is so edgy and pc like it's no wonder this game was under the radar
I don't know if you know this, but the resistance in The New Order is The Kreisau Circle. That's right, this game is technically canonical to the Bethesda games. You may ask why he is blond in the new games when he is supposed to be the same character as the brunette of this game, the answer is Shut Up its is a video game.
Man, hearing about this game always bums me out, I really wish I could play it - same for Cryostasis. Corporate nonsense interfering with videogame preservation is just such a goddamn joy.
Really hoping Activision being bought by Xbox as well as Bethesda means they can start selling this game again. No reason they shouldn't be able to when the money is going to the same place
Yeah, the problem is that Bethesda, holds the rights to all Wolfenstein games but that one for some reason. It's weird because they have the rights to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but not 2009's Wolfenstein, which is next in line in the series.
So much stuff pulled for random reasons. Like Alpha Protocol because of... Music license. Tons of stuff I have is delisted now. And sports games have it worst with licenses in general.
