RAIL BIKE - Version 5 - Added adjustability & removed the outrigger -- Building my own railbike

This is the fifth prototype of the railbike I am designing and building. While we did change some of the adjustment on the front wheel guide, it did not change drastically, it really was just to increase the different axis in which the adjustment would see. The outrigger stayed pretty much the same, with the exception of the stronger bolt to eliminate it breaking as we have seen in the past, and we took this opportunity to remove the outrigger altogether and see if it was possible to ride it without it. A couple of small failures, and few upgrades and we should be very close to the final product soon. Stay tuned to see where I take this thing!

Skateboard wheels, and tapered to give it more width, and tapered to help keep it centered on the rail, and somekind of suspension, spare parts, and tools in a low center of gravity positioned compartment on the out rigging arm to prevent hopping and maybe a helmet because the tracks and everything that your riding on is unforgiving in every way!!. I bet the smoothness of riding those rails is very enjoyable. Just quieter and way less bumpy, Sounds like a good time. I want to ride one now. Thanks for sharing. An electric motor for my near 60 year old body sounds good too.

Nice but you definitely need lock washers in there and maybe some rubber grommets to disperse some of that energy.

What about springs? For the guide wheels. That way they could automatically adjust to the different rail conditions one experiences while riding. Finding the correct springs for the job would probably be the toughest part. If they are too strong, they won't adapt but if they're too weak, instead of adapting they'll be bouncing out of place.

We talked about doing this in one of the previous versions. I think it would make the micro-onputs to the steering of the device smoother at the least. You are correct, it would be difficult to guess the best spring rate. On the other hand, it would add more parts and complexity to the system which needs to be relatively easy to maintain for extended remote trips.

Make the, '"Side, front, guide wheels, " (for one track ) with a little more horizontal angle, with springs, with them pushing on the top part of the track !!!! More parts is the price for a single track Bike !!! ( it will make it possible to go through crossings !!!) Maybe , Assist your balance with a [ SELF BALANCING BIKES / Gyroscope wheel / New way to teach a child to ride a bike coming soon ] [ Look, ma, no training wheels! Auto balancing bike helps you defy gravity ] - The gyro wheel will allow you to get up to speed as you start out !!! None Intended !!!! Some thoughts,.... Loosen your handle bars from the forks, """ maybe """ mount a "SELF BALANCING BIKES / Gyroscope wheel " out front,.... to ONLY the ( disconnected, but still in place ) handle bars. Thanks for including the part on trying to ride without the outrigger. As I said, getting started and stopping is going to be the hard part. It's not until you are going fast enough that the gyroscopic effect of the wheels will help you stay up. As you show in the video, the control dynamics are different than riding the bicycle without the guide, and training your brain to do it is not trivial. Given your guide, why don't you just try riding with the guide down on the street? That way you have much more leeway to learn how it works without immediately failing. Your experience so far reminds me of trying to learn to sailboard. The control response needs to be so fast that it needs to get into muscle memory. But since everyone else out there posting videos of rail bikes is also using an outrigger that definitely seems like a reasonable option. One interesting piece in your video was the camera view from the outrigger showing the swinging of your bag of rocks. That is important for the dynamics. It shows you the spring action of the bar and at least one of the frequency modes. Much of that is the spring constant of the bar, but it might also give you some insight into the driving frequency(ies). This could be helpful in designing your outrigger. I would like to see your measurements of the spring constant of the outrigger. In the next iteration what means are you thinking of to add dampening, especially adjustable dampening, as well as adjustable mass, to the outrigger? Right now you can add rocks and move it in and out, which might be enough mass adjustment, but you need some dampening I would guess.

The problem with eliminating the outrigger is the same as riding a skinny: the problem isn't keeping your wheel straight, it's keeping your mass centred laterally over the rail. It's probably easier to ride with just the outrigger, VS just the guide.

You are probably right, if I went slow enough, I could get rid of the front guide no problem. Just the front guide without the outrigger is impossible. The only option to remove the outrigger is to then remove the front guide, but at that point it's not a reasonable solution to my problem, as you would just be riding a skinny for 100 km.....wait a second...100 km MTB skinny? That would go viral for sure 😂

It is possible to ride a bicycle in a very straight direction. But it is a problem like differential calculus. The tire needs to turn a very small distance back and forth to be able to maintain the balance. It is a dynamic stability. The trick is to find a control mechanism that keeps the tire on the track while still giving you the control necessary to keep your balance by very small adjustments in the steering direction. It's a hard problem to solve. It's much easier to just put on an outrigger. But making a stiff light outrigger with the appropriate damping to avoid any resonant shaking is not easy either. This has been a fun project watching though and it has led me to investigate things that I would not have thought otherwise, so once again I am happy to be following this channel!

The "horizontal plane" element may not be necessary or even the best choice. Just getting the gyro spun up to stabilize you at low speeds is the trick.

Forgot, I am no engineer but had visions of the side wheels running on each side of the rail under the lip while the middle wheel was on top, the side wheels couldn't run up over the lip. Not sure if that makes sense, it is hard to explain.

I think I know what you are saying, almost like a roller coaster so the wheels are on the underside of the track? That's not a bad idea, the guide popping up off the rail is now my primary concern.

@@Suluk46 Yeah, kinda. Where the middle wheel is vertical like the bike wheel, the other two would be sideways (running against the sides of the rail). Wish diagrams could be done here. lol Hope you get the guide thing worked out! :) :)

Look on the bright side, more parts means you have spares! The axiom states, "Quality over quantity, but quantity has a quality all it's own." put a luggage rack on the back, and you can brace the outrigger diagonally. Still think you should try trailing the front guide, rather than pushing it....

I think the problem w/out the outrigger is getting started. Like riding skinnies, you will have a hard time starting form a stop on the skinny. But if you have momentum going into the skinny it's really not too hard. Wonder if the guide had some lateral flex?

I know that it seems possible with enough speed and stuff, but it's not. Reason is imagine riding a skinny and while trying to stay upright and on the thin skinny someone is making micro inputs to the handlebars (the guide) causing you to lose balance. Without the outrigger for balance, you then need to remove the front guide....and then you are just riding a bike a regular bike on a skinny. I would prefer to not have any outrigger, but the create something that self balanced would probably be a bit complex.

I would try horizontal wheels on the sides. Yes, it may not work on crossings, but just heading down the rails would be more stable....my 2 cents.

You are correct, so far the fully horizontal front side guide wheel has worked the best. Thats the plan moving forward.

i've been following along... have a railbike idea myself... my one thought, would be to combine the outrigger with the front wheel guide into a single unit...? also, due to the potential for stress on that front guide part, perhaps pulling that little fastener through the slot of the aluminum guide arm, add a washer? in my version (steel, because, weight is better than lightness IMO), i think i'm removing the front wheel completely, and going into a fork mount, while, having a (yakima style?) fork to hold the front wheel onto the outrigger (adds ballast)... i have a couple ideas about adding a second wheel fork, that allows me to 'tow' the set up, like a trailer, when not on the rails, even incorporating a 'bike packing' element within the added outrigger brace, so the entire package is compact, practical, and, can add ballast to outrigger while on rails... hmmm.... if i were to do a 'cross-country' version, for sure i'd consider going more lightweight with aluminum, as long as the strength wasn't compromised.... great project! keep it going!!

Nice! Lots of good ideas. The Bentley Railbike, which seems to be a very popular internet version, has the front wheel completely off the track, similar to your idea of having it a fork mount. I'm sure it works very well, and I'd consider it if I didn't need to switch between tracks and trails. I've also considered moving the outrigger to the front. Just this weekend, I experimented with wheel angle on the front guide - horizontal, vertical, and 65 degrees. My conclusion, is that it doesn't make a ton of difference. I think that there are a bunch of different ways to design a working Railbike and depending on what you want out of it, will be more of a driving factor than getting it to work.

Front guide should be vertical flat steel guide wheels and one center rubber for comfort. You should be able to pedal with no handlebars. The wheels will steer you. Weigh the bag and fill tube on outer end with lead to match.

Thanks man. Yes, I agree, on V4 I had the wheels on the opposite side and it cleared the tight spots, so I will return back to the design next. We are close to the final product at this point. Been quite the journey.

Any thoughts on adding a bar from the middle of the outrigger towards the bottom or base of the outrigger wheels? Would that add any stability? I feel like the outrigger isn't stable and wont be strong enough for a longer distance and you may snap that bolt again.

I am really trying to keep the outrigger as a single arm. Just so it is packable and universal to all my bikes. Right now that outrigger is just thrown together, and with the replacement of the bolt has not failed yet. I will have to at some point run some numbers to verify that it won't break. Right now it is an aluminum tube, I could change it to steel and it would be 3x stiffer with a weight penalty. Honestly, I have to wait and see after I play with it some more. I'm building version 6 tomorrow.

I've wanted to do this bike on the rails thing for a long time. Then I got the electric bike, and I wanted to do it even more. Now the electric motorcycle, so I really want to find a parts source. I have an entire tote of these wheels in bright neon colors so that's huge. Remove the outrigger? You're taking the fewer parts thing to the extreme. You would have to have a large gyroscope mounted under the frame. So anyway thanks for the incentive. Oh and there's no film in your GoPro, so you're not "filming." Think of another word, and lose the film, cuz we don't use cellulose anymore.

Lol. Yes, I typically try things out that people mention in the comments. And that was one of them...certainly increases the challenge. As for the GoPro, you must be using the old digital versions. The new, analog ones use film just like the old days.

The company that owns the tracks is actually me. They are located on my property and I paid the rail company to prepare and lay them so I could bring large equipment onto my land for development. I no longer use the rails and had them cut from the main line. Perfect spot for testing my rail bike prototypes 😁💪😀
