Railfanning at Helmstetter's Curve in LaVale, MD 

Big steam working hard in the Allegheny Mountains! This is what you'll find when you visit the historic Helmstetter's Curve in Cash Valley. Just off Cash Valley Road near LaVale, MD, the curve was once part of The Western Maryland Railway's main line between Cumberland, MD and Connellsville, PA. Today, it's preserved as part of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, and is often traversed by their recently restored WM (ex-C&O) 2-6-6-2 Mallet No. 1309 from May through October each year.
