Radio scanners that are commonly available can be used to pickup general railroad radio communications and defect detectors as well as police/fire/EMS radio and weather radio. Railroads use the frequency spectrum that's managed by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and they usually have a channel or channels that are specific to each subdivision or area. You can find that information online and then enter in the frequency for each channel on your scanner to listen in.
