Another superb video!, I’m coming to New York end of August from the U.K. to do some rail fanning on the Hudson line, LIRR, and CSX, would be great to meet you!
You should have fun. You definitely have to do the Northeast corridor between New York and Philadelphia as that’s the busiest part. The Hudson line is busy and very scenic. The LIRR mainline from Penn Station NY to Hicksville is very busy. Rush-hour see a good mix of electrics and diesels.
I remember going over to the town of Costa, which was near Crokett, and I walked the tracks there watching the trains go by from and to Martinez. I went back there about 2 years ago to close out a storage area I was still renting and also saw the tracks that passed the sugar plant (C&H). Crocket has a nice museum I never saw. Found fascinating computer equipment there that I had not used for over 40 years! I tried to get a job there in Martinez for the city but did not get it.
Wow !! That street running in Oakland is stunning. The Union Pacific special was quite a catch. You should live there, with all of that horn blowing. Your wife would love it. Get her a supply of Tylenol.
Great video. I used to ride the Santa Fe Golden Gates and sometimes the San Francisco Chiefs from Richmond to Fresno. My brother and I would try and find an empty compartment or drawing room. Unfortunately the Santa Fe went through Franklin Canyon rather than along the bay. The Santa Fe ride was almost an hour shorter than the SP (Slow Poke). Suisuin Bay used to be the location of the reserve fleet. I'm not sure if the Glomar Explorer was there but I was on the Hughes "Mining Barge" when it was there. Also on the USS Iowa. There used to be a lot of ships there and we were getting parts for a museum ship. My grandmother would call the overcast "High Fog." Low fog was called "Tule Fog." That's the kind where you couldn't see anything. It would come down from the central valley through the Carquinez Straits in the winter.
I also was in Hercules and saw an Amtrak train pass by. Said hello to the train operator going toward Martinez. You forgot to mention that you passed by the C&H Sugar factory.
I wonder why the Coast Starlight doesn't stop at Richmond for the BART transfer. The Zephyr does, but not the Starlight? Weird. It would be a great connection to SF via BART.
@@BenMonares Yeah, that's my guess too. But it's such a silly way to do it. Every other rail line in the state that crosses through the Bay Area stops at Richmond. And you can't beat that direct rail connection to SF. If even the Zephyr makes that stop I just don't see why the Starlight stops in teeny tiny Martinez a few miles up the line but not in Richmond which is much larger city and has the rail connection to SF, SJ, Oakland and the rest of the Bay. It's just silly.
The coast starlight used to stop at Richmond in California but they stop serving Richmond because of the timing they arrived in Richmond when it was past the last Bart train and the way to get out was gated up if they want to restart The coast starlight service to Richmond, they need to work with Bart, and Union Pacific to figure out how have someone to open the gates and close it once it stopped at the station
The Chargers sound a lot like old British Class 43s HSTs when they hit Notch 8, just quieter and a lot less smoke. The F59PHIs also sound almost identical to British class 67s (as I would expect, the 67 was a joint venture between Alstom and EMD and uses the same EMD 710G engine as the F59s).
I do remember the sound of the HST’s and they do sound very similar to the Chargers. I worked for British Airways for 20 years and I often went to London to do some (as you call it) Trainspotting.
Tim don't forgot that the NJT arrow 1s were turned into cab cars into the 80s and they were known as a Camaro like the car from chevy because it was njt comet smashed together with a arrow car and they were interesting to say the least they were retired before i was born in 2008. they were classified as a Comet 1A on metro-north and a Comet 1B on njt. The San Joaquín's got their jersey arrows in 2008. I saw you mention them as a comet 1B but they were cab cars on njt into the early 2000s i believe
Awesome footage. In my opinion, BNSF is the greatest railroad. They were even better before the merger, when they were Santa Fe. 1:24:43 Those Tesla trucks are butt ugly.
I have always been a Union Pacific fan going back to the days of steam to the present. If I dared, I would paint my house armour yellow. I won’t argue about your passion for the Santa Fe. I have several McMillan books of the Santa Fe with beautiful color photograph and dvd’s. How could you not love the Warbonnet?
@@3985uprrExactly! And I can understand your love of UP. Their Union Pacific theme song is very catchy and the Big Boy is a magnificent piece of machinery.
The issue of the homeless in the Oakland area is rather pitiful. Most people have become homeless because housing prices are so outrageous; not like New York City outrageous, but pretty close to it. Most people seem to think that if they camp out in the open, the State Legislature will relent. But, the other problem is that the area homeless shelters are already at their maximum. So, a brave few chose to brave the cold and keep to themselves; some are former military veterans whop refuse to use the Veterans Administration. Also, if a veteran is found out to be living on the streets, they can lose Veterans preference for housing. Not an ideal situation.
