Finally, after some considerable time of anticipation and planning, I managed to head out on a nice Sunday morning during the weekend break from work and do a comprehensive video of Emeryville. This station has been of great anticipation for quite some time due to its significance as the main stop for passengers destined for San Francisco (via Amtrak Thruway Bus Connections) while also serving as a key hub for Amtrak routes that utilize this station as well. Although this video turned out longer than expected, the amount of action and comprehensive footage I believe represents the significance of this station in the Bay Area. At any rate, the Emeryville Amtrak Station is one of the more intriguing stations in the Bay Area, not only because of the aforementioned details, but also due in part to its location. As a result of the local industrial and city topography surrounding the station, not only does this station feature lots of horn echoes from approaching trains, but it also features a hold-out rule due to access to the middle track platform (Main Track 2) only being accessible by crossing the adjacent siding track, thus it provides excellent opportunities for train meets and double departures. The Emeryville Station is situated along Union Pacific's Martinez Subdivision and although the freight traffic is not as heavy as other Northern California UP lines, a number of freights can still be seen through here, including those accessing the UP Oakland Yard, adjacent intermodal terminal, or through freights, as was the case on this day. BNSF trains can also be seen utilizing this line via trackage rights to access the Oakland Intermodal Terminal, including international shipping container trains, baretables, and power moves. In the end though, whether it is the tons of Amtrak, horn, or train action, meets, or double departures, Emeryville is a great place to catch one of the many Amtrak trains bound for numerous destinations close by or far and wide; or where one to simply go to relax and enjoy a pleasant day of railfanning !
Train 1 : Union Pacific INPOA-19 with C45ACCTE #7720, SD70M #4736, & C45ACCTE #7621. Not long after arriving at Emeryville to start off the day, the UP INPOA-19 appears approaching in the distance as it nears its destination at the Oakland Terminal.
Train 2 : Amtrak 723 with SC-44 #2104 & CabCar #6961. From this vantage point above, 723 can be seen approaching in the distance after departing from the Berkeley Amtrak Station. This train will hold at Emeryville to wait for Amtrak 712.
Train 3 : Amtrak 712 with CabCar #8311 & SC-44 #2103. With Amtrak 723 waiting, Amtrak 712 pulls into the station to board passengers before proceeding onwards to Bakersfield. Very neat meet and double departures of 712 and 723 !
Train 4 : Amtrak 11 (Coast Starlight) with P42DC #20 & #204. Originating from Seattle, the Coast Starlight arrives into Emeryville as part of its journey towards Los Angeles. You can also actually smell the aroma of the dining car serving breakfast for passengers as the train departs ! Very interesting camera vantage point in my opinion !
Train 5 : Amtrak 720 with CabCar #6962 & F59PHI #2005. With Amtrak 11 boarding passengers, Amtrak 720 approaches with some nice, extra horn action and echoes from the engineer to signalize its presence into the station ! Great engineer on this train !
Train 6 : Amtrak 6 (California Zephyr) with P42DC #52 & #187. Arriving into the station early, the eastbound Amtrak California Zephyr boards and lets their first set of passengers settle in before departing and beginning their journey east. Friendly crew !
Train 7 : Union Pacific IOADU-21 with C45ACCTE #7717, SD70M #5088, & SD70ACe #8333. With Amtrak 6 scheduled to depart shortly, an outbound UP intermodal appears and passes by as it heads north through Emeryville. Friendly crew on #7717.
Train 8 : Amtrak 724 with CabCar #8305 & F59PHI #2015. Great engineer on #8305 !
Train 9 : Amtrak 714 with CabCar #6963 & F59PHI #2002. Great crew with some cool and friendly conductors on board !
Train 10 : Amtrak 727 with F59PHI #2011 & CabCar #8308. Friendly engineer on #2011 !
Train 11 : Amtrak 711 with F59PHI #2006 & NPCU #90215. Nice horn and echoes upon departure !
Train 12 : Amtrak 729 with F59PHI #2012, CabCar #8312, & #8306.
Train 13 : Union Pacific EOZOZ-21 with GP60 #1004, GP40-2 #1410, #1347, GP15-1 #571, & GP40M-2 #1516. Friendly engineer on #1004 ! First time catching a GP15-1 as well !
Train 14 : Amtrak 728 with CabCar #6961 & SC-44 #2104. Nice K5LA !
Train 15 : Amtrak 733 with F59PHI #2014 & CabCar #8307. Decided to relocate to get a shot from the west side for the final train during my visit here. After this train departed, I stuck around for a little longer before calling it a great day out along the tracks.
Thanks for Watching !

Rail Road Kid Thank you for the kind comments ! I wouldn’t say I’m the best; if anything, I’m far from it compared to many others out there. In my personal opinion, any railfanning video is a video worth watching regardless of quality or who filmed it. Part of the fun is just going out there and seeing what will come by and the people you’ll meet. I just try to provide my viewers with some decent content of California’s trains, haha. :)

6961's bell is drunk, and the great P5 Legend appears to be trying to impersonate Mater and be the world's best backwards driver...
@parkermccormack2542

Do you mean cdtx cab car 6963's bell ??? If anything I agree it does sound a little off... like it make need a little more air into that mechanical bell
@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 5 лет назад
Parker McCormack I believe Superbaddy4 was referring to 53:27 and #6961’s bell. It was definitely skipping a lot, as you mentioned regarding the lack of sufficient air pressure.
@superbaddy4
@superbaddy4 5 лет назад
Yes, I was referring to that. Isn't it because of instances like that that 8301, 8307, 8309, 8310, 8312, and 8314 ended up receiving E-Bells?
@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 5 лет назад
Superbaddy4 Yes indeed. It only takes a little maintenance to keep the mechanical bells functioning properly, but most rail agencies usually seek to replace the mechanical ones with E-bells rather than to maintain them.
@superbaddy4
@superbaddy4 5 лет назад
I myself actually like the E-Bell way more than the EMD Steel Bell. I wish Amtrak California would just E-Bell all their Cab Cars.

@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 5 лет назад
D64TV Thanks for the comment ! I’m still currently in Northern California at the moment, but I’m hoping to do some railfanning sometime in July and August between Chatsworth and Los Angeles along Metrolink’s Ventura County Line.

I wonder, is it policy to switch off ditch lights on the locomotives of the long distance trains while stopped at stations? Or do some engineers just prefer to do that?
@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 3 года назад
Typically, when a train is stopped for an extended period of time or if the train is in a siding waiting for another train to pass, it is typical per FRA’s requirements to dim the headlights (which includes the ditch lights turning off). This requirement can also be seen when trains are passing each other at speed on mainline tracks as to not create unwanted glare from the headlights and ditch lights towards approaching trains and their crew, or also to the surrounding areas and individuals in proximity to the tracks.

Nice video. doesn't BNSF run through here as well?
@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 4 года назад
Thank you ! Yep, BNSF runs a few trains to and from the Port of Oakland via trackage rights with UP. I actually saw a BNSF baretable train pass through here right as I was leaving after railfanning here.

I'm gonna be home here, I really think that the California Zephyr should go to terminate in Oakland, rather than Emeryville.
@BrentNguyen46
@BrentNguyen46 5 лет назад
PsychoAmtrakFan The California Zephyr has historically terminated in Oakland (at the Oakland Central Station) in the past, although the equipment deadhead proved unfavorable from the new Jack London Square station versus direct moves from Emeryville. It would however be pretty nice to see an additional long distance train besides the Coast Starlight through Oakland JLS !
