During the afternoon of October 26, I headed out towards Napa County in order to catch the Wine Trains operations. NVRR 72 & NVRR 70 (MLW FPA-4s) were the power for today's trip. Also in the video we will see power moves in the yard & NVRR 57 with the "Midnight in Paris". With the recant announcement that most of the NVRR roster will be retired and scraped, It was very important to catch the railroads fleet before they all vanish. Enjoy!

Awesome catches! This is likely gonna be the last wknd they’re running the FPA-4s since the new locomotive arrives tmrw. I practically grew up with this railroad and I always loved seeing it especially for the FPA-4s. I’ll miss these beauties a lot

Even though I usually haven’t been seeing the Wine Train that much, it will be sad when these ALCO’s are scrapped.

Indeed, I completely understand why they are being retired (presumably the lack of available parts) but being scrapped, ouch

No, parts has nothing to do with it. And, scrapped isn't quite true either. Parts are readily available for the ALCO 251 engine blocks. You can even buy a brand new 251 engine if you want, they're still made to this day. The state of California gave Napa a grant to sell them 3 brand new ECO locomotives. In the grant it states that holes must be drilled or torched into the ALCO engine blocks to disable them permanently. So, the locomotives are not being scrapped, but they might as well be, because who would buy a locomotive that needs a new engine? Moral of the story is you can blame both NVRR themselves (for accepting the voluntary grant) and California for killing the ALCOs. In a state where people voted smarter, this would never happen.

I have news. The wine train’s new loco safely arrived the yard as of Monday and has since started service, but from what my wine train friend said, it sounded like the FPA-4s won’t get drilled until the rest of the new locomotives arrive. Between then and now, I expect that the FPA-4s will still run but only for backup service. Same goes for the RS11 and the Ex NS HH. As for the chop nose GP9, that thing has way too many issues so that thing will almost certainly never be used again
