Always reminds me of the guy sawing off the branch he's sitting on. Why this section of track isn't fully removed, thoroughly excavated and replaced with proper fill escapes me.
Ballast stone wears, losing the sharp edges which interlock. This wear along with track dirt impedes water drainage, casing tie rot, mud pumping and soft track. This is quicker than removing rails, regrading and replacement, especially on CWR track without joint bars.
