Mark, there's something powerful and soothing about those engines doing their work. A lot of this is lost in the limited dynamics of video, but I have to say, this video has captured plenty of it. I love to sit on my porch and listen to routine UP and BNSF trains pass by, two grade crossings just northeast of my home in Lodi. Love those air chimes and the deep rumble as they open the throttles.
Spent the better part of a day out here in November of 2016. Wife and I really enjoyed our day there. Now I'm gonna have to go back and find my videos from there to relive my day....
And I also gotta say, about Caliente.... The day my wife and I spent there; the place is like a ghost town!!!! Sure, cars would stack up at the crossing there in "downtown" Caliente.... But outside of an occasional railroad employee, I saw absolutely ZERO humans at all. And even that wasn't much. One conductor standing outside the engine for a rollby, and one friendly guy in a hi-rail..... If you're an introvert, this is definitely the place for ya!!!!
After I shot it I realized it is a pretty cool place for railfans to watch and it's easy to get to. I guess all the years of trying to avoid working there have left me jaded! Thanks for checking it out!
Mark, I recently came across your channel and have enjoyed watching your Tehachapi Pass videos. Please keep the train, and history videos of the pass coming. While I’m not a “Foamer”, I am a railfan . Grew up on my grandpas farm, where the BNSF right away ran right thru the farm. I’ve been intrigued with the Tehachapi Pass for the last 25years, and have had the chance to visit the mountain twice. Last time out was in 2015 before the big changes.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. I'm in the process of shooting more stuff as we speak so there's plenty to come! I'm not a railfan but seem to have a pretty good feel for what the fans enjoy. I guess 40 years at the RR will do that! Thanks for checking out my channel!
Yes, it definitely earns its name in the summer. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I plenty more on my channel and more on the way! Thanks for checking it out!
Same horn as the 70 they picked up here locally from the FEC... and it seems you don’t owe anyone for videos as these if YOU don’t care about the trains as others might or expect you to. But thanks for the enormity of the train and how mesmerizing it can be based on the length of it....
Aww..I don't feel I owe anyone anything. I just feel I'm blessed to live in such close proximity to some of the best rail scenery on earth. Why not share with those who may not be so blessed? Thanks for the comment and for checking it out! It's appreciated!
Excellent camera work Mark. Not many videos out there showing the 2 grades difference in the same screen shot. Since your video on grade crossing signals, I've been finding myself studying the different styles of mechanism housings and wondering what models they are. One day I'll be able to identify 'em like I can the locomotives. Did you ever service or repair the Rf equipment used to read the car tags? Would like to see a video about that.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy my stuff! The AEI sites (car counters) are Communications dept. Equipment. I have assisted in installation and repairs of some of the sites but don't know about how they actually work. I'm friends with the local comm tech. I'll see about picking his brain and putting a piece together about them. Thanks for checking it out!
@@MarkClayMcGowan I do enjoy all your content, or as u say "stuff." You have a good speaking voice for the camera I wish I had. We're planning a trip to North Cali sometime this year I think to meet the nlaws & first stop on the way will require a tour guide around the T loop with someone with the knowledge I'm interested in. Did you see the video I posted of the Train Manifest?
@@bfurailroad1104 i have not but I'll go look after dinner. When you're on your way let me know so I can clear a day to show you around. Just today I finished shooting a piece on the reason for the loop's existence. I haven't gone over the footage yet so I hope it makes sense! I'll be posting it next week.
@@MarkClayMcGowan If it don't make sense I'll laugh out loud and put it in the comments below! Our main destinations will be an excursion train ride with a live Bald Eagle in Arizona, Bakersfield and Lake Shasta maybe in June but that trip will depend on any turmoil happening like wildfires and the mudslides.
@@bfurailroad1104 i don't know what part of Az. you'll be in but it should be nice that time of year. Bakersfield is still nice in June as is Shasta. The fires are generally later in the summer. Just let me know!
The only place on the Tehachapi over 3% is between Marcel and Cable and it's 3.2%. I know some standard guage logging roads were as much as 4.5%. Slippage with modern locomotives is rare but not unheard of. Locomotives use sand blown in front of the wheels when taking off or when slippage is detected. Thanks for checking it out!
