Railroads and Rivalries in Southern Africa

The U.S. and China plan to spend billions of dollars refurbishing key railway lines in southern Africa that link critical resource mining hubs in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with ports on both sides of the continent.
For the U.S., it's the Lobito Atlantic Railway that goes from the copper belt in Zambia 1,300km west across Angola to the Atlantic Ocean. However, China is looking in the other direction: proposing to spend upwards of a billion dollars to refurbish the TAZARA railway, which also begins in Zambia and heads almost 1,900km West to the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salam on the Indian Ocean.
But building and managing these railways isn't going to be easy given the complex politics in the region. Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika, a former managing director of the TAZARA railway, and Solange Chatelard, a prominent China-Zambia scholar at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, join Eric & Géraud to discuss why Beijing and Washington face such formidable challenges in this new logistics competition.

Neocolonial leaders never understood that the interest of their nations is paramount to that of their masters. Only few African countries understand imperialism and western interest.

There is a new model in East African model between China and both Ethiopia and Djibouti and Kenya and China, involving both rail and urban toll road in Kenya. So do not look on the new relationship b ased on the political TAZARA of the 1970s. Ethiopia and Djibouti joint operations and Kenya aone both on training over 10 years, even a training institute in Nairobi.the Nairobi urban highway is BOT. So there will be no problem. I cannot comment on the American Lobito Railway because it is new in Africa but it must based on partnership of the colonial type.

Asean countries most of them have railway lines built or upgraded in cooperation successfully with China. Most have their own management with help when required from Chinese experience. Malaysia railway authority interacted with Thailand and Singapore, its neighbors with no problem. Laos acted with Thailand too to smoothen people and cargo transport without third party meddling. I dont think African leaders are any stupid than these Asean leaders, like these forum speakers wanted us to believe .

Anola has a very sophisticated political elite, well educated , professional and disciplined. They have cultivated relationship and adjusted their laws and committed to their agreements and repay their debts. The future of Africa will go through Angola. As for the lobito railway line, Sub Sahara Africa needs all the logistic connections it can get. in 2050 Africa will have the largest world population. Hence it will be utilized for more then mineral extraction. Goods moving inwards to the centre will be profitable and vice versa.

The problem is improper use of resources one the other is by the time things develop if we are looking at decades in terms of timeline the rail maybe outdated or need to be refurbished due to age.

@@skydragon23101979 refurbishment of infrastructure, whether its road , rail, housing , airports, begin the moment when they are built. The key is not just the built structures but the finance and the human resources to maintain them. This is the core of modern society.

China operates like a true business man, they know there are profits (financial benefits) to be make through "Buying and Selling" "Imports and Exports", hence they accumulated such wealth in international trade and is about catch up with USA. But unfortunately many countries from Global South are very slow to understanding the "Essence" of trading and benefits of international trade, no wonder some countries are so poor even after 70 years of independence.

GDP is calculated by: - Investment (Domestic + Foreign Investments). - Consumsions, - Imports and Exports. Some Africans think exporting their minerals and resources to China, its another form of Colonialism. How stupid is that? Why Saudi Arabia not complaining selling their oil globally is putting them under Colonialism? Why Australia and Brazil selling their minerals to China is not under China‘s colonialism? Even China hater, Trump is pushing China to buy American produced oil and LNG, and Agriculture products like soybeans and wheat.😂😂😂 Trump didn‘t feel USA is under Chinese colonalism by exporting to China, isn‘t it?

If you want GDP growth, you need investments, both from Local Government and Forein investment (FDI). China is the champion in both fields. From Government side, they invest trillions by trillions in their own infrastructure in roads, railways and all kinds of projects, even borrow big amount of funds from IMF, World Bank and countries like Japan. China was not scare of Western Debt Trap, because they know its an civil investment which will bring benefits to Chinese citizens in the future. At the same time, they welcome foreign investments from every country and regions, even from Taiwan, Japan (former enemy) and USA. They don‘t care and not allow politics to get into business. Thats why Steve Jobs was in China as early as 2000 to set up the supply chain in China. While some Africans are worry about Chinese investment in Africa, US/EU are colonising Africa again, even India is coming with its population to take over micro businesses in Africa. 😂😂😂 Come on, guys, relax. Stop all these stupid xenophobic posture. Welcome investments from the world with open arms and a smile.

If you want to be a rich nation, learn from China. China exports all kinds of products, electronics and textiles to make profits. This part is easy to understand. But China imports alots to reap financial benefits too. China just give zero tarrifs on agriculture products from 33 African countries into China. By doing this, China can lower costs of living for its citizens, so Chinese citizens can have more disposable income to spend and invest back into Chinese economy. Cheaper imports from African countries can turn into other food products that China can export back into global markets, and beat other competitors with high input costs. (China turn it into their advantage) While US just put up high tarrifs on Chinese products and sanction every other countries. US has 45000 sanctions against different countries and companies in the world. Thats crazy and stupid. Thats why inflation is so high in US/EU, and citizens are crying.

Products from US/EU are just not competible anymore on global markets. Their products are just way too expensive. Even ASEAN countries knows that and learn from China, lower their input costs and remain competitive on global markets. Hence ASEAN countries are growing fast too, especially Vietnam, Indonedia and Malaysia. The answers to the century old poverty question has been cracked by Far East Asians, and Africans just need to copy the answer and follow the instruction to free themselves from under development and poverty. Africans must not miss out this time. Learn from China and welcome Chinese to Africa. Period.
