On today's 2 minute garden tip, I test my rain barrel system to answer the question: are rain barrels the best way to harvest rainwater? We have been bone dry lately, and my rain barrels were empty. We received a light shower during this rain barrel test, and it shows how efficient a linked rain barrel system can be. Come see the results!

We've been catching rain storms like crazy in the Charlotte NC area. They seem to be fizzling out by the time they reach the coast. I have 3 55-gallon barrels tied together, and they are full to overflowing.

I have well water so I have to collect rain water. I'm in an efficiency apartment at the moment I have to put a plastic wine barrel half under the gutter spout and draw little steel buckets full, walk over to my rain barrels and pour it in by the bucket! I call it "milking the roof"😂. Landlord is actually talking about putting gutters on the pump house and connecting my barrels.

April into early May is our only break from the rain until October. We do nothing but drown from late May thru September. It's terrible. We pray for drought in summer and rarely get it.

I used your tutorial and this kit to set up 3 rain barrels. I have them on even height and connected at the bottom. Water will be at the same level in all 3. It takes 0.1 inch of rain on my roof to fill all of them which is awsome. I only need to use city water couple times a year.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 2 месяца назад
That's incredibly efficient. You must have a really big roof! I have a hip roof because of our hurricane problem where I live, but I'm betting others roof types can collect water more quickly.

Great video, as always! I’m curious about potential shedding of volatiles (leached from the shingles) that might contaminate the water. I’m also betting you’ve already researched this. Any info you can share?

Love this and your tutorial on setting them up, I used it last year to set up my system and it works perfectly. One question...do you worry about sterilizing the water at all? Asphalt shingles, animal/bird droppings etc from roof...I keep reading due to these this shouldn't be used for vegetable gardens? What are your thoughts?

Amazon price is outrageous. Google , fb market, or craigs, rainbarrel, pickle barrel. Most I see in Tidewater Va are around 30 bucks. My first pickle barrel I got 10 yrs ago where 10 bucks each.

I'm not far drom you over in Wayne. There is a place [[if it is still open]] you can get barrels for under $20. Think it's called Benson Novelty. Used them at other place but lost those and my raised beds in a move that went badly year before. Still trying to recover.

We only get dry on the shoulder seasons. April 1-May 15 and October 15-Dec 1 are our "dry-ish seasons." in April-early May, we're too far south for the jet stream and it isn't humid enough for thunderstorms, and mid-Oct thru November the jet stream is still above us and, again, no more t-storms. The rest of the year, it's wet, wet, wet. Fronts all winter, storms all summer.

I have no gutters either. Trying to figure out a way to make a long narrow funnel to put on top the barrel and pick the lowest corner of my garage roof. No brainstorm ideas yet
@cosmicbeer
@cosmicbeer 2 месяца назад
Depends on where the water ends up after coming off your roof. A series of chanels and/or pipes in the ground could lead to an underground tank, but installing gutters would probably be less expensive and provide cleaner water.

Glad rain barrels are working for you. I found out that rain barrels should be internally scrubbed once a year and to never use the roof water on my garden vegetables. Also there needs to be a system for overflow and I really don't have any place to put the barrels. Nice idea., though.

Haha why? Here in Australia we rely on water tanks a lot! My house is not connected to the town water supply at all, by choice. The town water comes out of the river and is treated with chemicals to make it ‘safe’. What a joke. I have over 70,000 litres of tank water for all my water needs, from drinking (put through a Brita water filter), to cooking, to washing, showering, and watering my garden.
@IrisAzalea
@IrisAzalea 2 месяца назад
The kit he is showing in the video stops filling when it gets to the top. Any extra goes back into the downspout. The barrels will never overflow. As for scrubbing the inside, you'll be surprised as how many countries outside US uses huge tanks and barrels for water supply to houses. No, I'm not talking about developing 3rd world whatever countries
@sharonhoffer3599
@sharonhoffer3599 2 месяца назад
@@IrisAzalea Australia for one! Outside of major cities, many people rely only on tank water. But if you calculate it right, that’s all you need, and once you buy a few big tanks, your water is free and really good for you (no nasty chemicals)

I've heard to put lemon grass in your barrels to keep alge from forming. Probably have to put it in a cheese cloth bag so it doesn't clog it up. I added it to my rain barrels that are open on top and it did keep the water clean.

Yes. But is it worth it? 2 barrels means 100 gallon max. The cost of 100 gallons of water from the city is about 25 cents where I live in CA. 2 barrels are $200 dollars.
